23.01.2022 Against the backdrop of Sydney’s Bondi Beach, Lifeguard Hoppo talks about the red flags of domestic violence and how it’s everybody’s responsibility to call out... disrespectful behaviour. We’re Better Than That is a video series campaign created to promote respect and healthy relationships, and encourage men to be active bystanders when they witness behaviour that condones and contributes to violence in our communities. The videos are funded by the Central and Eastern Sydney PHN, and made in partnership with the Eastern Suburbs Domestic Violence Network, Hope Believe Shine Foundation, and Randwick, Waverley, Woollahra and Bayside Councils. If you or someone you know is affected by domestic violence, help is available. You can call NSW DV Line on 1800 65 64 63 or the Men’s Referral service on 1300 766 491.

17.01.2022 Today marks the beginning of 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence How did the day come about? On 25 November 1960, sisters Patria, Minerva and Maria Teresa Mirabal, three political activists who actively opposed the cruelty and systematic violence of the Trujillo dictatorship in the Dominican Republic, were clubbed to death and dumped at the bottom of a cliff by Trujillo’s secret police.... The Mirabal sisters became symbols of the feminist resistance, and in commemoration of their deaths 25 November was declared International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women in Latin America in 1980. This international day was formally recognised by the United Nations in 1999. In June 1991, the Centre for Women’s Global Leadership (CWGL), alongside participants of the first Women’s Global Institute on Women, Violence and Human Rights, called for a global campaign of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. The 16 days begins with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (today) and ends with International Human Rights Day on 10 December highlighting that violence against women is a fundamental violation of human rights. 05.01.2022 MEDIA RELEASE: https://mailchi.mp/dvnsw/vigil25112020

02.01.2022 This year is like no other. Even before COVID-19 hit, violence against women and girls had reached pandemic proportions. Globally, 243 million women and girls ...were abused by an intimate partner in the past year. Meanwhile, less than 40% of women who experience violence report it or seek help. A survey of specialists at 34 community services across NSW earlier in the year found rising rates of women experiencing domestic violence since the onset of the pandemic, with more than 85% recording an increase in the complexity of client cases. This is why #16DaysOfActivism exists - to provide an opportunity for the community to band together to reject violence and encourage conversations about preventing violence. #16days #orangetheworld #genderequality
