25.01.2022 NORTHERN Inland Academy of Sport’s Tamworth Services Club Rugby League Program passed another point at North Tamworth’s Jack Woolaston Oval today. Almost 50 you...ng teenagers from all across the Greater Northern Region - representing Groups 4, 19 and 21 - turned out for the first joint session in the program. The young hopefuls had trained in satellite sessions at Aberdeen, Tamworth Boggabri and Inverell in recent weeks and came together for the first combined session today. It was a testing session too, lasting around three and half hours. They received coaching from a coaching staff headed by NIAS Head Coach Peter Stevens. He had support from Scott Bone, NIAS CEO James Cooper, Canterbury Bulldogs Pathways Development Manager Craig Wilson and former NRL star Tom Learoyd-Lahrs. Learoyd-Lahrs and Stevens ran one of three stations on Jack Woolaston Oval, concentrating on tackling and defensive techniques. The NRL-like drills were intense and the attention to detail by Learoyd-Lahrs and Stevens a huge eye-opener for the Under 15 footballers. And Wilson, himself a former North Sydney Bears first grade forward headed another station concentrating on attacking forays through traffic with the young triallists bursting through pads or completing attacking raids. They also ran attacking drills featuring cut out plays. They all went good, peter Stevens said at the end of the long combined session. I’m real happy with that. He’s looking forward to another combined session in two weeks time (Saturday, October 10) at Jack Woolaston Oval. All these sessions help the boys springboard into the Tigers Under 16 team, he said of the Greater Northern Tigers Under 16 side. This is a great platform for them and all are eligible. He said the Greater Northern Tiger Under 16 trials will actual games providing they meet with Covid-19 protocols and will be held late next month. 24.01.2022 REAFFIRMED Group 4 chairman Terry Psarakis painted a bright picture for the local rugby league competition when it held its annual general meeting at Wests on... Sunday. The Tamworth accountant had assumed the interim chairman’s job after the resignation of former Group 4 chairman Ray McCoy earlier in the year. He ramrodded a Group 4 Board that had instituted the highly successful Wests Entertainment Group 9’s and plotted a course back to a positive financial position. That success prompted the Group 4 clubs to vote unanimously for Psarakis to remain in the chairman position along with his four other current board members Ron Binge, Craig Power, Lisa Dellar, Lad Jones as well as adding two new board members to replace the outgoing McCoy and the tragic death of North Tamworth club president Jody Cooper. Former West Tamworth and Tamworth City Lion Pat Crowe, also a former North Tamworth club president and committee member, and Mick Schmiedel, a former West Lion, Tamworth City player and captain-coach who will coach Gunnedah in the 2021 season, were voted onto the Board. The Group 4 AGM also conducted a minutes silence in the memory of Jody Cooper and former referee Bob Edgecock, at the head of the AGM following their untimely deaths earlier this year. It was a short but respected interval before hearing a positive report from an excited chairman. Everything points to a bright future, Terry Psarakis said. We are looking ahead to better times with brighter picture. Psarakis and his Board had been affected by the Covid-19 Pandemic, cancelling the 2020 season but it didn’t deter them as they elected to run a short Wests Entertainment Group-sponsored 9’s (WEG 9s) and watched it grow into a significant and successful competition at Scully Park over four Saturday nights in Tamworth. The WEG 9’s helped us for sure, he told the AGM in the Ken Chillingworth Room at Wests. It was a great promotion for us. It went off better than any of us imagined. I was particularly impressed with the four captains Brenton Cochrane, Mitch Doring, Cody Tickle and Scott Blanch. They were outstanding. It also showed in the Bottlemart Man Of The Match Awards too (Doring won the Man of the Series from Cochrane with Tickle and Blanch also polling well). It was a great advertisement for the game and our clubs. He also thanked Group 4 secretary Catherine Weeks and treasurer Geoff Dunn for their great input as well as the new sponsors attracted to the WEG 9’s Carey’s Freight Lines, Marius Street Family Dental, Shay Brennan Constructions and JT Fossey. He also thanked his Board members - Lisa Dellar, Ron Binge, Craig Power, Lad Jones (plus the late Jody Cooper and resigned Ray McCoy) for their positive inputs. , Group 4 also improved on the balance sheet and turned around a loss into a profit of around $20,000. I believe there is a bright future for Rugby League in Group 4, with added sponsorship, more positive media exposure and a hard-working Board I think it’s going to be a very exciting period. Group 4 has its new 2021 season tentatively starting on the ANZAC weekend next season and ending with Grand Finals in early September. 20.01.2022 GROUP 4’s Wests Entertainment Group 9’s is kitted out and ready to go. The jumpers, shorts and socks for the four teams Shay Brennan Construction, Careys Frei...ght Lines, Marius Street Family Dental and JT Fossey have arrived and will be handed out to the four squads before this Saturday’s opening round of games at Scully Park. Former Wee Waa, Parramatta, Manly, St Helens, NSW and Australian star Jamie Lyon, through his Paladin Sports company has provided the kits for all four teams. The Australian Kangaroo, who began his football career as a Wee Waa Panther and helped them to A Group 4 first grade premiership, ensured the order for the four teams as well as referees kits were rushed through. Lyon was one of a number of high profile former Internationals and NRL stars to post their support for the new WEG 9’s in the past few weeks. Lyon, Brad Fittler, Laurie Daley and Darryl Halligan all posted their support and best wishes to Group 4 for their inaugural WEG 9’s. NZ Warriors CEO Cameron George, who, like Lyon, played in Group 4, also added his support from Auckland and wished all four sides success in their bright and colourful strips. They have come up a treat, reckoned interim Group 4 Chairman Terry Psarakis said of the 9’s jumpers, shirts and socks. They look very smart. We’re very happy with Jamie Lyon’s Paladin and their clothing and we’re looking forward to kicking it all off on Saturday night. The first round of matches will be played this Saturday night with the Careys Freight Lines versus JT Fossey match kicking off the exciting new 9’s at 5pm. That is followed by the Shay Brennan Constructions v Marius Street Family Dental game. The Shay Brennan Constructions team then back up to play JT Fossey with the Marius Street Family Dental/Careys Freight Lines game the final one for opening night. The second and third round games will then be played on October 10 and 17 with the Final set down for Saturday, October 31. Spectators must sign at the gate with the gate opening at 4.30pm. Entrance fee is a gold coin donation to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. We just want to make fun to play and entertaining to watch for everyone, Terry Psarakis added. 16.01.2022 GROUP 4’s regular season might have got the chop because of the Covid-19 Pandemic but its inaugural Wests Entertainment Group 9’s got the Chopper. The Choppe...r in this case is the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service and its marvellous aero retrieval service. Group 4 recognises WRHS is such a vital emergency service that it will donate all the entrance fees from the up-coming WEG 9’s to the Chopper (WHRS). In keeping with the tough times too Group 4 has elected to keep those entrance fees at just a gold coin donation for the WRHS in an effort to make it affordable as well as fun and entertaining for both spectator and players alike. Richard Jones OAM, the chief executive officer of the WRHS, is delighted his organisation will receive the gate takings for the bright and innovative 9’s. We are very thankful that Group 4 for that, Richard Jones told Group 4 today. It’s a great concept and we wish everyone a safe and successful tournament. Jones, a Group 21 premiership winning captain-coach with Singleton and a hooker/prop with St George in his younger playing days, isn’t the only high-profile footballer/personality offering their support. Former NRL stars Laurie Daley, Brad Fittler and Jamie Lyon as well as Warriors CEO Cameron George have all sent messages of support for the WEG 9’s. Indeed Lyon’s clothing gear company, Paladin, is providing all the jumpers, shorts and socks for the four teams and referees. 15.01.2022 SHAY Brennan Constructions had a tough start to the Wests Entertainment Group 9’s at Scully Park in Tamworth on Saturday evening. The Cody Tickle-captained side... lost both games on the opening night of the inaugural WEG 9s, losing to Marius Street Dental (16-10) and JT Fossey (16-11). It wasn’t the result Cody Tickle was looking for although he and Dan Boland picked up individual honours when named Bottlemart Man of the Match in both losing games. Former Group 4 referee Peter Virgen and Gold Coast Titan Damian Kenniff donated their time to Group 4 to judge the MOM’s in all four games and were suitably impressed with the effort and skills on show in Saturday’s opening games of the inaugural WEG 9s. Cody Tickle scored both tries for his Shay Brennan Constructions side in their 16-10 loss to Marius Street Family Dental. We turned over a bit of possession up their end, he said of an initial game. We’ve got to gel a bit better but towards the end of that game we started to get better. His side then backed up to lose their second game when 16-11 losers to JT Fossey. They trailed 8-nil at halftime after Liam Ball and Nathan Vaisey had crossed for JTF and were down 12-nil after Harlee Millgate scored early in the second half. However Dan Boland shrugged off a Harlee Millgate tackle to score the first try for SBC and Marcus Hayne converted. Down 12-6 they were back to a 12 point deficit when Liam Ball’s outlet to the open side was cut off and he snuck back to the blind to burrow his way over. The pendalum struck again though with Jake Tighe grabbing an intercept for SBC and scoring a five-point try under the posts. While the kick missed it was 16-11 but try as they might the SBC could not add another late try and steal a win. We got better that game, Cody Tickle said. It is a fast game and you’ve got to take your chances. We did play some good footie when we got the ball too. Once we click we’ll be right but we cannot turn over so much possession. They play unbeaten Carey’s Freight Lines in the first game next Saturday and finish off the night by tackling Marius Street Family Dental. 12.01.2022 SCOTT Blanch is fighting a battle to be fit for Saturday night’s opening round of Wests Entertainment Group 9’s matches at Scully Park. The outstanding and vers...atile North Tamworth Bear picked up a hamstring strain while playing for Tamworth Magpies in their recent New England Rugby Union competition. It forced him to miss a preliminary final against Coffs Harbour Knights, who ousted the Magpies but lost to Walcha in the recent Grand Final at Scully Park. It’s not 100 per cent, the dual-Group 4 premiership winning captain-coach said this week. I’m trying to get on the park. He is captaining the Marius Street Family Dental in the inaugural WEG 9’s and wants to be a big part of the exciting new competition when it kicks off Saturday evening. Carey’s Freight Lines and JT Fossey play the opening game in the WEG 9’s (kickoff 5pm) while Blanch and his Marius Street Family Dental side tackles the Shay Brennan Constructions team in the second game of the night. I should be right, he wishfully said. But they are going to be all tough games. He said his side will be without Mitch Dening (unavailable) for the first round game too. His team will have a get together, a little run around later this week. The out of town boys will miss that but we will have the majority of the team there, work out a few plays and go from there. He is skippering a side full of talent and speed. Brilliant teenager Trent Taylor could be one of the stars of the WEG 9’s with his acceleration and attacking nous a key factor for the MSFD side. Another could be Lachlan McGrady, who starred at St Greg’s Campbelltown and is the son of former Moree and Northern Division star centre Barry McGrady. Another young gun is Gunnedah’s Deacon Sankey. He too is blessed with speed. Saturday’s games start at 5pm with entrance a gold coin donation to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. MARIUS STREET FAMILY DENTAL: Scott Blanch (captain), Trent Taylor (Dungowan), Mitchell Sheridan (North Tamworth), Brett Jarrett (Dungowan), Jack Rumsby (Kootingal), Lachlan McGrady (Moree), James Cooper (North Tamworth), Mitch Dening (Kootingal), Kieren Williams (Werris Creek), Daniel Kelly (North Tamworth), Brayden Jerrard (Kootingal), Matt Wilson (Dungowan), Deacon Sankey (Gunnedah), Ryan Ingram (North Tamworth), Shuaib Rhodes-Swain (Uralla), Ben Taylor (Kootingal). 10.01.2022 GROUP 4’s electric 9’s had an unlikely addition for the four captains of the respective sides before they contested last Saturday night’s Finals Night at Scully... Park Regional Sporting Precinct. Brenton Cochrane (Carey’s Freight Lines), Scott Blanch (Marius Street Family Dental), Mitch Doring (JT Fossey) and Cody Tickle (Shay Brennan Constructions) were special guests at the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Tamworth headquarters on Saturday. The four skippers of the Wests Entertainment Group 9’s sides lined up to have a promotional shot in the helicopter hangar to thank the chopper for their assistance on the attendance gate at the WEG 9’s. It was an illuminating experience for all four young men as they stood for pictures with WRHS pilot Dylan Cross and crewman Tom Lee Lewers. They had the inaugural WEGS 9 trophy in trail as well with a backdrop being the $18 million AW 139 helicopter. It’s great to be able to come and have a look and see it first hand, Brenton Cochrane said. Great to be up close and personal. Cody Tickle reckoned it was cool and delighted the 9’s could help raise funds for the chopper. Especially when they’ve taken a hit during the Covid, the Shay Brennan Constructions skipper said. They do such a great work for all the community. All entries to the first three nights of the 9’s was via a gold coin donation and that all went to the WRHS. That realised more than $2000 with Group 4 donating a good percentage from the Saturday, October 31 Final night attendance. Scott Blanch captained the Marius Street Family Dental side and reckoned the trip out to Tamworth Airport to see and be pictured with the multi-million-dollar machine was awesome. Just to see it up and close is great, he said. Then to hear from the crewman (Tom Lee Lewers) and hear how they go about the day to day running and basics was very interesting. It’s great knowing they are there when you need them. Mitch Doring, the talented young skipper of the JT Fossey side, was also more than impressed by the size and structure of the AW 139. It’s the first time I’ve seen it up close. It’s a great opportunity. The WEG 9’s finished on a high note at Scully Park Regional Sporting Precinct on Saturday night. The Final was an upset win for the Scott Blanch-skippered Marius Street Family Dental side. They ended the Carey’s Freight Lines unbeaten WEG 9’s run with a 22-15 victory in the final game of the night, the WEG 9’s Final. Bottlemart Man Of The Match in the Final was MSFD’s Matt Wilson, who set up a couple of tries and kicked three sideline conversions. 10.01.2022 NORTH Tamworth Bears dual premiership winning captain-coach, Scott Blanch, will be reunited with two former schoolmates when the Wests Entertainment Group 9’s k...icks off at Scully Park on Saturday evening. Blanch went to high school at Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School in Tamworth Dungowan Cowboys Brett Jarrett and Matt Wilson. Farrer, with Blanch as its captain, won the 2008 University Shield with a victory over Sarah Redfern High at Campbelltown Stadium. A dozen years later and the trio of Farrer students are reunited in the Marius Street Family Dental side for the inaugural WEGS 9’s. All three went their individual ways from high school but have returned to Tamworth where Wilson and Jarrett have been mainstays in the Dungowan Cowboys side the past few seasons while Blanch linked with the North Bears and played in the last five first grade premiership sides, including two as captain-coach. He’s also won a Clayton Cup as well. Brett was in our Uni Shield winning side 13, Scott Blanch recalled this week. Matt had left the year before. It’s the first time we’ve played together since then. I’ve played against them a few times though at different times. He’s looking forward to linking with them when their Marius Street Family Dental side plays the Shay Brennan Constructions side in the second game on opening night and then Careys Freight Lines in the final game of the first night. He believes both Jarrett and Wilson will be key men in his side along with Werris Creek centre Kieren Williams. Everyone knows about Kieren, Blanch said of the talented and tough Magpies centre. He’s such a strong ball runner and very mobile. He was a good pick up for us. They play a Shay Brennan Constructions side chock full of mobile, forwards. Apart from captain Cody Tickle they have hammer-hitting backrower Jake McManus, outstanding Gunnedah backrower Matt Baker, Narrabri Blues star Daniel Jobson and Werris Creek workaholic prop Thomas Brown. Then there are a couple of younger talents Marcus Hayne and Dylan Porter. They will rotate at hooker for us, Cody Tickle said this week. They all should be able to defend the middle well and slow down the ruck. 9’s is pretty quick, it can change in a moment. He’s hoping his side can produce those moments on the back of good defence. 09.01.2022 Footy is back today, but we are still operating under the guidelines of the NSW Public Health order and the COVID guidelines.

09.01.2022 BRENTON Cochrane could be missing two or three of his squad for Saturday night’s opening Wests Entertainment Group 9’s at Scully Park in Tamworth. His Carey’s F...reight Lines side could be missing the likes of talented young Narrabri hooker Jacob Nichols. We’ll work out who we’ve got when we get there, an unrattled Brenton Cochrane said this week. We could be missing two or three. But we do have plenty of talent and speed a real good mix. His side might be a little light on for a 5pm clash against JT Fossey and then a game to finish the first round of games against the Marius Street Family Dental but he believes his talented side will handle the lack of manpower. We do have a blend of youth and experience, Cochrane added. We will be competitive. All four sides look very strong, there are plenty of good young players as well as older players in all four sides. I think it’s going to be very close. He thinks individual brilliance could be a large determining factor in this inaugural 9’s and he has that in this side with the likes of Sam Taylor, Ben Williams, Jarmarley Jerrard and Isaiah Adams. Taylor’s brilliant left foot and ability to quarterback a side will be a huge boost, especially with him back running without hindrance from a major knee operation. Ben Williams is another pivot with great attacking ability and organisation. They will compliment Cochrane’s own attacking guile with some notoriously solid and hard working forwards such as Phil Beaton and Travis Small. HE said spectators and rival teams should also watch out for the likes of Jamarley Jerrard, Lachlan Trindall, Liam Hatch and Clay Frendin. You just can’t predict what’s going to happen in this 9’s, Cochrane added. CAREYS FREIGHT LINES: Brenton Cochrane (captain), Sam Taylor (Kootingal), Jacob Nichols (Narrabri), Ben Williams (Moree), Phil Beaton (Kootingal), Joseph Wade (Moree), Travis Small (Narrabri), Brayden Reid (Kootingal), Lachlan Trindall (Narrabri), Liam Hatch (Kootingal), Isaiah Adams (Narrabri), Jarmarley Jerrard (Kootingal), Clay Frendin (Dungowan), Ryley Taylor (Kootingal), Nathaneal Slater (Werris Creek), Cooper Thompson (-). 08.01.2022 MITCH Doring and his JT Fossey side had a bonding session at Manilla on Saturday. The youngest captain in the inaugural WEG 9’s invited his young and mobile sid...e out to Tiger country for a bit of a run and bonding session. We had a little training run but it was more like a bonding session for some boys who have never played together before, Mitch said. We ran around for a half hour or so, then had a sausage sizzle and a few beers. We sat around for an hour or so and got to know each other better. That, funnily enough, recalls interim Group 4 chairman Terry Psarakis, is how the Tamworth Premier League T20 Cricket ran when Psarakis was the TDCA president and driving force behind that innovative new clubless-cricket competition worked so well. That was about entertainment and mateship. The Tamworth cricket side then went on and won the Country Championship at the Sydney Cricket Ground that season! Mitch is hoping that sort of bonding might get his side over the new WEG 9’s line in a few weeks time with what is a young and mobile side. We’ve got a lot of good ball runners and a lot of speed, Mitch added. It’s a very talented side. I’m very keen to see what they can do. While 9’s is about ad lib football played at speed it is also about defence, Mitch added. We’ve talked about our defence, he said. Got to make sure our one-on-one tackles stick. If we defend well we can use that mobility and speed. He believes Harlee Millgate, his number one pick, will be one of the stars of the 9’s. The Werris Creek Magpie pivot has been a star in the 13-man form the past two seasons and will be a predatory threat throughout the WEG 9’s. I’ve played a bit of footie with Harlee, he’s got a good footie brain. His brother (Dwight) goes allright too. Then there’s a player like Aaron Donnelly who can score tries out wide. The Gunnedah centre is an outstanding attacker for his Bulldogs and will be one of their stars in the 2021 Group 4 season. He’s not the only Bulldog Mitch believes will be a star in the 9’s either. He hasn’t seen much of versatile young star Liam Ireland but what he’s heard has been good and can’t wait to see how he uses the extra room. Mitch’s JT Fossey side has drawn Carey’s Freight Lines in the first game of the new WEG 9’s and Mitch is extra wary of just what brilliant Narrabri pivot Brenton Cochrane (who was to have played with Kootingal in this season's aborted Group 4 competition) and his CFL side can do. That game kicks off the new competition at Scully Park on Saturday evening followed by the Shay Brennan Constructions v Marius Street Family Dental game. The Shay Brennan Constructions side then backs up and plays JT Fossey in the third game with Marius Street Family Dental and Carey’s Freight Lines finalising opening night. Spectators must sign in at gate entry (Park Street) with a gold coin donation to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service the entrance fee. 07.01.2022 CODY Tickle’s Group 14 foray might have ended on the weekend but the Werris Creek backrower is just starting his Group 4 Wests Entertainment Group 9’s at Scully... Park on Saturday evening. The talented secondrower had a guest role with the Coonamble Bears in a truncated Group 14 competition. After sneaking into the semis his side lost to minor premiers Gilgandra Panthers in a hard-fought knockout semi on Saturday. They got us in the end, Cody said. Gil were just too good in the final five or 10 minutes. We were right in it up until then. He enjoyed his guest stint out west in a competition he said was very physical. They love their footie out there, very passionate. He too loves his footie and can’t wait for the WEG 9’s to kick off Saturday night. He is captaining the Shay Brennan Constructions side and excited on a number of fronts. Excited to be bouncing from the Group 14 competition straight into the inaugural WEG 9’s and with a mobile, quick and young side on Saturday night. His side plays Marius Street Family Dental in their first game and then back up to play JT Fossey in the very next game. He’s not sure whether that is a plus or a minus. Depends on how fit the boys are I suppose, Cody said. It’s going to be interesting in itself to see how we handle it but it’s just good to give it a go. As far as players go he has one of the best in Group 4 as his first pick Gunnedah excitement machine Dylan Lake. He’s just got natural ability and reads the play so well. Can’t teach that stuff. It (ability, pace and brilliant stepping) just oozes out of him. It’s going to be exciting for us to because we have good, mobile forwards and they will be hard to defend against. He was talking about Gunnedah backrower Matthew Baker, North Tamworth goalkicking backrower Jake McManus, Werris Creek prop Thomas Brown and Narrabri star Daniel Not only will they be hard to defend but they will defend well in the middle too and help slow the ruck. That in turn will give their outside backs more time to defend as well and then counter attack quickly. Saturday’s WEG 9’s start 5pm with the Carey’s Freight Lines-JT Fossey game starting the inaugural 9’s followed by the Shay Brennan Construction-Marius Street Family Dental game. The Shay Brennan Construction side then tackle JT Fossey with Marius Street Family Dental and Carey’s Freight Lines completing the first night’s fare under the Scully Park lights. Entrance is through the Park Street gates with entrance fee a gold coin donation to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. 07.01.2022 Hi all - I work at Fox Sports and am working on a story on how the drought is impacting rugby league in country NSW. This is after the merger of NSW and CRL an...d the announcement of financial support for bushfire impacted communities. The drought has obviously impacted communities across NSW for years but what I am trying to do is talk to people in the rugby league community across NSW to see how widespread it's impact is on clubs. I spoke with NSWRL for the piece who said they were not in the position to offer financial support like they did for the fires for drought-impacted communities, primarily because it is a multi-faceted issue that they say requires more extensive planning into the future in the context of a broader discussion over the resilience of country rugby league. What I was looking for is people who could speak to this, drawing on personal experiences on what league offers country communities and what the funding would do in easing the stress. Any input would be greatly appreciated! See more
