16.01.2022 Are you having trouble getting a good night’s sleep? Hormones control many of your body’s processes including growth, development, reproduction, response to stress, metabolism and energy as well as your sleep. Melatonin is released in response to darkness suggesting to our body that it is time to sleep. That is why bright lights before bed time can affect your ability to fall asleep. Whilst we are asleep, our bodies release growth hormones which help to stimulate tissue rep...air, growth, along with hormone which affect our appetite and immune system. Adrenaline is the hormone which makes you feel alert, it can therefore make it difficult for you to fall asleep. Adrenaline is released as your body’s response to stress and has been found to be higher in those with insomnia. Sustained stress and adrenaline levels stimulate a cortisol release in our body. Cortisol is another hormone which stimulates waking. The natural cycle of cortisol is that it decreases throughout the day until we go to sleep, when it starts to increase again preparing for the morning. It usually peaks just before waking. So how can you promote a good, non-broken sleep? Reducing stress, doing relaxing activities at night before bed, avoiding bright lights and screens, and going to bed and waking at regular times. Chiropractic adjustments can help to optimise your nervous system control of hormones by accurately sensing your environment / stressors and responding appropriately. Chiropractic care also promotes balance in the stress / relax autonomic nervous system which allows your body to appropriately shift into a relaxed state when you prepare for sleep.
