19.01.2022 For those following along, here are 7 helpful field marks of our mystery #empidonax flycatcher captured at the Tip the other day. 1. Big round large eye with c...omplete, but fine yellow eye ring., 2. Big long bill, some might say ‘honking’ Bill.,3. Big green round head., 4. White throat., 5. Green back and head, 6. Long primary projection that you can see just extending beyond the finger, 7. Last, but not least, Gray legs! This is an Acadian Flycatcher, an Endangered species in Canada. This is one of very few fall records for #LongPoint and probably our first October record! #birding #migration #banding #ringing American Birding Association See more

12.01.2022 Bird Foot Friday! Many people think small flycatchers look alike, and they’re not wrong! Many of these birds are varying shades of greenish-brownish-grayish and... often flit in and out of shady, leafy areas making them difficult to ID. However, there are some fairly distinct differences that might not be very obvious in the field. Take this Eastern Wood-Pewee - these birds have very short tarsi (the foot joint that the band encircles), perhaps even peewee-size tarsi

10.01.2022 We're starting to see a lot of exciting start-of-season posts from banding stations and research projects. We love to see what you're catching and learn about what you're doing! As you're sharing your work on social media, take a moment to review NABC's Photographic Guidelines to ensure that you are always putting out the best version of your project. https://nabanding.net/passerines/photographic-guidelines/

04.01.2022 Bilateral gynandromorph In Powdermill Bird Banding’s nearly 60 year history, we’ve caught less than ten of these extraordinary birds, the most recent of which ...was a Rose-breasted Grosbeak that we banded today. What does bilateral gynandromorph mean? It means that the animal is partly male and partly female, and in this case that line runs roughly down the middle of the bird with male on the right and female on the left (from the perspective of the bird, not the photograph!). This bird was aged as an after-hatching-year, meaning it hatched last year at the earliest. Male Rose-breasted Grosbeaks in their non-breeding plumage have black wings and tail, pink wing pits, and often have pink on their breasts whereas females have much browner wings and tail and yellow wing pits. Such an exciting capture and another one for the record books! *the previous bilateral gynandromorph banded at Powdermill was also a Rose-breasted Grosbeak. You can read about it here: http://www.powdermillarc.org//Pictorial_Highlights_090605.

04.01.2022 Inclusion is so important! Kudos to NABC Director Kristen Covino and her co-authors for advocating for moms in ornithology. Share your stories and strategies for managing a life with kids and with birds, and let us know what kind of support would be helpful.

01.01.2022 Everyone welcome and congratulate Sarah Harper Díaz, who was recently elected to serve on the NABC as a Director-at-Large! Sarah lives in South Carolina, where she is the director of the Sullivan's Island Bird Banding Station. A big proponent of community outreach and education, Sarah combines advocacy, public programming, and science in her work. Sarah took her first banding workshop at the Taricaya Ecological Reserve in 2009, and followed up with workshops at Powdermill ...Nature Reserve and Toucan Ridge Ecology and Education Society (T.R.E.E.S.). More recently, she served as the bander-in-charge at Costa Rica Bird Observatories - CRBO, and has served as a teaching assistant for Braddock Bay Bird Observatory's bander training classes. Sarah was certified as a passerine trainer in 2018. And did we mention she's also a mom and a business owner? Welcome aboard, Sarah!

01.01.2022 We've updated our guidelines for banding during the Covid-19 pandemic. The English version can be found on our website, French and Spanish versions forthcoming. http://www.nabanding.net//2020/06/Covid19-NABC_20200629.pdf
