10.01.2022 F E E D I N G | O U R | W H I T E | S W A N S A swan’s digestive system and nutrition requirements are very different to ours. Feeding our beautiful swans human... food not only makes them ill, but it also puts them at risk during certain times of the year when they require a very specific diet (for example during breeding season). Another important thing to know is that rotting human food negatively affects the fragile ecosystem of our Avon River in which the swans live and raise their cygnets. But if you still want to feed them, please do so in a safe way. Packets of seed (approved of and provided by the Shire's Rangers - as shown in the photo) are available to purchase from Northam Visitor Centre for a gold coin donation with all proceeds going back into environmental programs. See the tips below on what else is good (and not so good) for our feathered friends to eat. Good fresh foods are: shredded lettuce silver beet corn (off the cob or canned) peas grated carrot chopped broccoli cut seedless grapes What our swans definitely can’t eat: bread (especially bread with mould this can kill them!) baked goods rotten food meat
