26.01.2022 BUSINESS E-INVOICING , THE WAY FORWARD We have been receiving many enquiries regarding the above so we thought we would send out a quick update. There are two sides to eInvoicing the ability for a small business to send an invoice from their accounting system directly to the accounts payable software of another business or government department, and the ability for a business to receive an invoice (bill) directly in their accounting system from a supplier.... eInvoices can be sent between accounting software as long as both are connected to the same eInvoicing network, even if the buyer and supplier are using different accounting software. For example, e-invoices can be exchanged between Xero and non-Xero software. This is another step towards digitising small business, eInvoicing is a government initiative to help improve the way businesses interact with each other as well as to lower the cost of doing business and improve payment times. In 2018 the Australian and New Zealand governments signed a Trans-Tasman agreement to adopt eInvoicing and committed to a standardised approach to exchanging invoices using the secure Peppol network. Most accounting systems, including Xero simply require registration onto the Peppol network to get up and running the process takes but a couple of minutes and we are happy to help in this regard. If you would like us to help you with this feel free to contact Leslie Clarke at our offices.

24.01.2022 The Stimulus Package in a nutshell. With the release of the stimulus package this week, I thought it a good idea to provide some details. Much of the detail has not been provided yet, so I urge you not to implement any course of action in this regard until discussed with me first as more information is coming to light daily.... I will try to be as clear and to the point as possible. 1.The current $30 000 instant asset write off has been increased from $30 000 to $150 000 until 30 June 2020, it applies to each asset individually and applies to both new and used assets. 2.50% of the cost of new assets can be written off immediately with the remaining 50% being written of using the existing depreciation rules the $150 000 limit does not apply in this case. This provision ends on the 30 June 2021. 3.Employers will receive 50% of the PAYGW payable during the 6 months ending December 2020, this will be in the form of a tax free credit to the BAS statements lodged up to a maximum of $25 000.Those businesses that employ staff but do not pay PAYGW will receive a credit of $2000. 4.Eligibale employers will be able to apply for a wage subsidy equal to 50% of the wage paid to apprentices and trainees during the period 1 January 2020 to 30 September 2020 - up to a maximum of $21 000 per apprentice or trainee. 5.Eligable recipients will receive a one-off amount of $750, this amount will be paid automatically from the end of March 2020. 6.The ATO will on a case by case basis be willing to defer up to 4 months the due date for payment of amounts owing on business activity statements (including PAYGI) and income tax returns, etc. 7. Business’s will on a case by case basis be allowed to vary their PAYG instalment amounts to zero for the April 2020 quarter. Businesses that vary PAYG instalments to zero can also claim a refund of any instalments made for the September 2019 and December 2019 quarters. 8. Remitting any interest and penalties, incurred on or after 23 January 2020, that have been applied to tax liabilities. (on a case by case basis) 9. Working with affected businesses to help them pay their existing and ongoing tax liabilities by allowing them access to low interest payment plans. (case by case basis)

13.01.2022 Deductions for payments to workers will be disallowed in certain circumstances - You will not be allowed to claim deductions for payments to workers if you have not met your pay as you go (PAYG) withholding obligations. This applies to income tax returns lodged for the 2020 income year onwards. If the PAYG withholding rules require an amount to be withheld, to claim a deduction for a payment to a worker, you must withhold the amount from the payment before you pay the worker and report that amount to the ATO.
