25.01.2022 Ross River virus is very active in the environment. The only way to prevent infection is to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. #FighttheBite
24.01.2022 Two of our wonderful vollies at Targa West Events in Pemberton today! We don’t just make house calls, we also get to attend some awesome events like these!
20.01.2022 Thank you to all our amazing vollies! Thank you to the paramedics who train us and our Volunteer Development Officer who makes sure we stay on top of our skills!
19.01.2022 Four off-duty police officers leapt into action after a 27-year-old man collapsed at a sporting centre in Leeming. The officers were playing indoor cricket on T...hursday 18 June 2020, when another player collapsed in the net next door. Hearing calls for help Sgt Simon Bowen immediately called 000, directing centre staff to bring the defibrillator. Sgt Brad Hasson and Det Sgts Nathan Carbone and Dan Whitney commenced CPR while Sgt Bowen connected the defibrillator. In the short time it took for St John Ambulance to arrive three shocks were delivered. The man, Dane, was treated at a nearby hospital where it was determined he had suffered a cardiac arrest. He has since made a full recovery. Dane said the incident highlights the importance of effective first aid training and defibrillators. If those police officers had not been there that night, as well as a functioning defibrillator, I can safely say I might not be here today, he said. I cannot express my thanks enough.
16.01.2022 Local Port Kennedy resident, Clint was reunited with the Paramedics who saved his life after suffering from a cardiac arrest earlier this year. Clint had no pr...e-existing health concerns and believed he was fit and healthy, but after suffering from suspected sun stroke after a day out boating, something didn't feel right. After multiple visits to the doctor and taking antibiotics, he started experiencing chest pains. Eight minutes after calling for an ambulance, our crew arrived on scene but within moments of arriving, Clint became unconscious. Our Paramedics immediately commenced CPR to keep him alive on his way to Rockingham Hospital. Clint is now alive and well thanks to the attending officers. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them. They were absolutely amazing and knew exactly what to do. When I regained consciousness, I actually tried to fight them off as I didn’t know what was going on but I owe them my life, said Mr. Della-Santina. We’re so pleased to have the opportunity to be reunited with our patients who have made a full recovery. Talking to a happy, healthy and grateful person who was very unwell last time you saw them is a truly humbling experience. It’s why we do what we do, said Paramedic, Jolene. What an incredible outcome! Well done, team!
15.01.2022 COMMUNITY WARNING: this Saturday 8th August the Pemberton Northcliffe Road will be closed from 10am to 3:20pm. Please plan your travel around delays.
14.01.2022 Anyone can save a life. Knowing CPR and how to use a defibrillator could mean the difference between life and death. Ensure you know how to save a life - you never know if or when you'll need these skills.
12.01.2022 Way before we adopted CPR as we know it today, did you know that hundreds of years ago, patients were whipped in an attempt to restore blood flow? It's certainl...y not a method used these days (for obvious reasons) but it does make you appreciate how far we have come when talking about the science behind resuscitation. We found some of the zaniest methods of resuscitation from history and we wanted to show just how far we have come. 1500's - The Bellows Method involved using the bellows from the fireplace to blow hot air into the lungs through the mouth (eww...) 1700's - The Fumigation Method was popular amongst the Northern American Indians and American colonists. It involved blowing tobacco smoke into an animal bladder and then into the rectum of the body being resuscitated (yes, you read that right). This practice lasted until 1811. 1800's - The Russian Method saw patients covered in ice and snow to slow their metabolism. This method hoped that freezing parts of the body would assist in circulation. And our favourite bizarre technique from history... In 1812, European lifeguards would lift the patient onto the back of a horse and trot it up and down the beach. The bouncing was believed to have been the best method for providing compression and relaxation of the chest. The process was actually discontinued due to a large amount of horse manure accumulating on the beach. There you have it! We now know of course that 30 compressions to 2 quick breaths (over 2 seconds max.) is one of the best possible methods. Compressions that are a accompanied by good speed, fully released and have good depth are best. It’s pretty incredible how many lives have we think have been saved thanks to CPR. It’s estimated that 5 million lives have been saved since the 1950's. All you need is a pair of hands and you can make a difference.
12.01.2022 WA Police officers Ingrid and Ryan Farrel tell Gareth Parker on 6PR their incredible story of saving their neighbour's life and how their training helped them s...tay calm during a difficult situation. The couple ran to help after their neighbour Pat suffered a heart attack on Sunday afternoon Ryan carried out CPR after finding the 84-year-old not breathing and without a pulse. Pat is now recovering in hospital but did manage to call in to tell Ingrid and Ryan just how thankful he is that they are his neighbours.
11.01.2022 Sometimes, the only person available to act in an emergency is a child. Bailey learned first aid in school and had to rely on these skills only six weeks later,... in saving his mother's life. Hear about his inspiring story below. Without knowing this essential training, the outcome for Bailey's mother could have been very different. To help us reach our goal of training every child in WA, every year by 2025, please make a donation to St John Giving. Plus for a limited time, your donation could win you a Family Experience with The Wiggles!* *Terms and conditions apply, see website for details: https://giving.stjohnwa.com.au/first-aid-focus-appeal
10.01.2022 Happy St John's Day! Today we celebrate the birth of John the Baptist, born on 24 June over 2,000 years ago. It is after him our worldwide Order is named ...and in whose name we serve. Did you know many countries celebrate this day in a number of ways, including: In Norway as elsewhere in Scandinavian countries, St John's Day is celebrated with a communal bonfire. The event is also known as Jonsok, meaning "wake of Saint John". In Puerto Rico a night-long celebration, called "La Noche de San Juan" is held. After sunset, people travel to a beach or any accessible body of water (e.g. river, lake or even bathtub) and, at midnight, fall backwards into it three, seven or twelve times. This is done to cleanse the body from bad luck and give good luck for the following year. In Sweden a Saint John’s Eve custom involves people visiting holy springs as "a reminder of how John the Baptist baptised Christ in the River Jordan." It is the biggest holiday of the year in Sweden, feasting the whole day and night is common. In Portugal there are St John's street parties in many cities, towns and villages, mainly between the evening on the 23rd and the actual St.John's Day on the 24th of June. St John's night in the city of Porto is considered by several guides as one of the best parties in the world! The Brazilian celebration is called 'Festas de São João'. Since Northeastern Brazil is largely arid or semi-arid, these festivals not only coincide with the end of the rainy seasons of most states in the northeast, but they also provide people with an opportunity to give thanks to Saint John for the rain. They also celebrate rural life and feature typical clothing, food, and dance. When Christianity came to Lithuania, it brought with it the celebration of Saint John's Day. While Christians celebrate Jonins (St. John's) in the local language, Lithuanians with the names Jonas, Jon, Janina receive many greetings from their family, relatives and friends.
10.01.2022 It’s Shock-tober and today is Restart a Heart Day! Do you know where your nearest Defibrillator is? The Northcliffe Sub Centre decided to gift this external cabinet to the Northcliffe General Store for the AED they already owned so that it’s now publicly accessible 24/7!

09.01.2022 Trigger Warning : The aim of this post is to help educate the WA community about what to do when experiencing or witnessing a Mental Health emergency. If any ...of the content expressed in this post upsets you, please discontinue reading and reach out for support. A couple of days ago, we posted about when you should call for an ambulance. We received a lot of feedback about the inclusion of when to call for help in a mental health emergency. We wanted to help answer those questions and have pulled together some useful information that will hopefully help in the event of a mental health emergency. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ How do I know if I need to call for help? This is a tricky question to answer. In most situations, it's not so black and white and sharing a checklist of potential symptoms may not be the right way to answer this question. We believe that when in doubt, always call Triple Zero (000). It's always better to seek assistance than do nothing at all. We're here to help and will do our best to assist you in your time of need. Our Communications Officer will do their best to offer assistance over the phone and get the right help to you as soon as possible. Always remember that you are important and deserve help when you need it most. If you need urgent help but do not want an ambulance, please reach out to the resources listed at the bottom of this post. Most importantly, if you or someone you know is at immediate risk of harm it is imperative you call for help. Not all responses to Mental Health emergencies will result in admission to hospital. All cases are managed individually and are subject to the needs of the patient at that time. Always follow DRSABCD and ensure first of all that you are safe from any danger. 09.01.2022 Although we don't really celebrate Halloween here in WA, there is a chance that there will be a few spooky creatures trick or treating tonight. Our Paramedics a...re keen to see every little monster return home safely tonight, so here is some advice from our crews: Parents should accompany kids under the age of 13, and have a road rule refresher before you go especially reminding them to look both ways before crossing and staying on the footpath. Make sure your kids can see out of their face masks to prevent them falling and injuring themselves or worse - falling into the path of traffic. Drivers are urged to have extra patience, slow down around suburban, neighbourhood streets and keep an eye out for trick or treaters. Be prepared to stop if you see a group of ghoul-ish characters crossing the road. After all, it only happens once a year. Ask your kids to wait until they get home before starting to eat their lollies it avoids any risk of choking. Encourage your kids to only eat (or even better, accept) wrapped confectionary so you know it’s safe to eat. This is a good tip if your child has any food allergies. In the event of a serious emergency over Halloween, St John reminds you to call triple zero (000). From all of us at St John WA, we wish everyone a safe and happy Halloween! Have a great night!

06.01.2022 WEATHER WARNING A severe weather warning has been issued for people in the South West, South Coastal and parts of the Lower West and Great Southern di...stricts. The Bureau of Meteorology says two cold fronts are expected to cause DAMAGING WINDS to southwestern parts of WA throughout Sunday and Monday. "A cold front will cross the southwest of the State during Sunday morning. A second, stronger cold front will move over the South West land division and southern Goldfields during Sunday night and Monday morning," the weather warning states. "The first cold front is expected to cause DAMAGING WINDS averaging 70-80 kp/h with peak gusts to around 100kp/h that could cause damage to homes and property. "Winds will then ease through the warning area after 9am Sunday, however a second stronger cold front is expected to affect the area southwest of a line Jurien Bay to Southern Cross to Israelite Bay from 8pm Sunday night through to Monday morning. "DAMAGING WINDS with gusts to 120kp/h, ABNORMALLY HIGH TIDES and DANGEROUS SURF are likely with the passage of the second cold front. "Locations which may be affected include Albany, Bunbury, Busselton, Katanning, Mandurah, Manjimup, Margaret River, Mount Barker and Perth. "The first front is typical weather for this time of year but winds may cause damage to property and make conditions hazardous." WHAT TO DO The Department of Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should: If outside find safe shelter away from trees, power lines, storm water drains and streams. Close your curtains and blinds, and stay inside away from windows. Unplug electrical appliances and do not use land line telephones if there is lightning. If boating, swimming or surfing leave the water. Be alert and watch for hazards on the road such as fallen power lines and loose debris. Keep away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways. Be careful of fallen trees, damaged buildings and debris. Be careful of fallen power lines. They are dangerous and should always be treated as live. Assess your home, car and property for damage. If damage has occurred take photos and contact your insurance company to organise permanent repairs. If your home or property has significant damage, like a badly damaged roof or flooding, call the SES on 132 500.
