25.01.2022 NEW STUDY: Environmental growth drivers in juvenile and adult mangrove jack The mangrove jack (Lutjanus argentimaculatus) is a species of snapper from tropical ...north-western Australia. Juveniles inhabit estuarine environments, but move into coastal reefs as they mature into adults. Joyce Jia Lin Ong et al. used a dendrochronology approach (analysis of otoliths) to correlate fish growth in these two life stages with various environmental factors. Juvenile growth was positively correlated with terrestrial factors that affect precipitation and river runoff. Adult growth was correlated with large-scale atmospheric and oceanic factors, most strongly the Niño-4 index, a measure of the status of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation. La Niña years (with warmer temperatures and lower salinities) had positive impacts on adult growth. The authors conclude that climate change is likely to affect these two life history stages differently, and that future management programs should take this into account. 15.01.2022 While Dom was having trouble I was loving my new shimano chronarch 50E equipped with the new Diawa basstik. Loaded up with some 20lb SAS and I'm impressed. Broke it in on a Jew just under (68cm I think) and dropped a similar sized Jew at the boat and a nice lizard. Losing fish didn't worry me with all the fresh pouring down the river it was always gonna be tough.

05.01.2022 DO FISH FEEL PAIN? Professor Brian Key puts the argument to bed for good. ANY successful angler knows that when a big fish takes your hook then you better hang on to your rod. That fish is going to flee. In the world of science this behaviour is called an escape response. Fish have evolved this powerful survival mechanism over hundreds of millions of years. Angling would not be the same if fish instead cleverly swam towards your rod. The escape response is automatically gener...Continue reading
