07.01.2022 What are Hard Water Stains Hard Water Stains are the most common type of glass damage. They are the result of glass corrosion from constant exposure to water and dissolved inorganic compounds such as calcium, chloride, magnesium and sodium. The most common areas of Hard Water Stains are shower doors, windows located near irrigation sprinklers and areas exposed to constant dripping water (e.g. leaking gutter joints). Water running down buildings can also cause hard water sta...ins when it dissolves and carries materials from concrete or cement based products. How to Avoid Hard Water Stains There are two ways to avoid Hard Water Stains appearing. PREVENTION: Stop glass corrosion by eliminating water exposure where possible (e.g. repair gutters, redirect irrigation, etc.) PROTECTION: Apply a sealer to the glass surface. Glass needs to be cleaned from Hard Water Stains before sealer is applied. How to Remove Hard Water Stains Depending on the extent of damage, Hard Water Stains can be removed either chemically or mechanically. While chemical methods work in some cases, Glass Polishing (mechanical method) can restore panels to as new virtually every time!
