25.01.2022 #Repost from @vipooart who has come up with this great idea to promote potters to sell their work and use the proceeds of the sales toward supporting fellow potters. The ability for potters and ceramic artists to earn their usual income has been greatly affected during the COVID-19 pandemic. The time has come for us to help each other through this difficult time. Building on the success of Clay For Australia, we would like to offer a way to keep sales happening CLAY FO...R CLAY COMMUNITY, @clayforclaycommunity #clayforclaycommunity. Its simple and anyone can take part. Heres how: 1. Post images of the ceramic work you wish to sell on your Instagram account. 2. Up to 5 ceramic works for sale can be posted at any one time. 3. Give details of the work size, materials and price. Be sure to note that postage is extra. 4. Include #clayforclaycommunity as one of your hashtags. 5. Add this work is part of @clayforclaycommunity yforclaycommunity in your post. 6. Ask for anyone interested to direct message (DM) you. 7. Keep an eye on your comments so as to give prompt attention to the possible sale. 8. Negotiate the additional fee for postage depending on their location. 9. Make a sale and keep the payment. 10. When you have sold 5 works, pay it forward by spending 20% of your sales on another artists work who is also using #clayforclaycommunity. 11. Be sure to follow #clayforclaycommunity and @clayforclaycommunity

24.01.2022 During his (at home) residency Marks aim was to explore the vessel with an emphasis on refinement of form. Mark was especially interested in creating larger forms, through stacking multiple smaller items together. Pictured are various forms drying, captured by @thrownandfired

22.01.2022 As we head into these cooler months we would just like to remind you that all work dropped off to be bisque fired needs to be 100% bone dry! Ideally work should be left to slowly dry for 3-4 weeks, sometimes longer in winter. The bigger the piece, or the more joins, the longer the drying time. If you arent sure if your creation is dry, leave it on a piece of paper over night, and if the paper buckles when you remove the object, it isnt yet dry and will require more drying ...time. We would hate for the pieces you have laboured over to explode in the kiln and damage other peoples work in the process. Some things to keep in mind when drying work is the location shelves, sills and benches which are near windows or doors are always going to create problems with uneven drying. Work will become too hot on one side in sunny weather, too cold on one side in cool weather or too dry on one side in windy weather. Dramatic difference in the temperature/drying within a piece of work only means TROUBLE. Also consider what surface you are drying you work on, Pottery is ideally dried on cement sheet or timber boards, NOT laminex, glass or plastic sheets which will not allow any drying on the bottom surface of a work and subsequently create cracking problems as the work dries and tries to shrink. Most clays shrink by at least 5% from the wet to dry stage.

22.01.2022 Please note we will be closed next Monday 9th June for the Queens Birthday Public Holiday.

19.01.2022 Only 2 weeks into her residency and Madeleine Thornton-Smith has been super productive. #NPSresident Repost @madsielouise New shell moulds Ive been working on during the first two weeks of my three-month residency at @northcotepotterysupplies... I became interested in casting shells during my residency last year in Barranco, Lima at @cottodesigns and while working on a collaborative exhibition with the extraordinary jewellery artist @katherine_hubble for our show at @alternatingcurrentartspace The first moulds are of shells from a Japanese restaurant @izakayajiro serving scallops - I asked to take them home! The second mould is of a shell my grandmother used to use as a soap dish in her bathroom - in the house I now live in.

13.01.2022 While its been sad to not be able to have our Studio Artist in Residence working in our space, weve been able to catch a glimpse of what Mark has been up to when dropping work off to be fired. Repost @thrownandfired As I dropped of some more vases to be bisque fired, it was with a bit of a shock that I realised Im now more than half way through my residency at @northcotepotterysupplies ... Ive been having a full on experience, experimenting with new forms and combinations. This has of course let to a few failures as well as many successes. Its just as well clay can be recycled! Who knows what the second half of my residency will bring? #artistinresidence #vases #1000vases #wheelthrownpottery #australianceramics #pottery #ceramics #potterywheel

04.01.2022 *ATTENTION ALL BRT USERS* We know that BRT is beautiful clay, and it looks so lovely once its been high fired, but sadly BRT wreaks havoc to our kiln shelves. During the second firing, the trachyte tends to melt and stick to the shelves, resulting in heavy damage, requiring our kiln technician to grind the shelves clean after each firing. To eliminate this, we are asking all general firing service users who are working with BRT to please make some setters to sit your work on... when being glaze fired to help protect the shelves, and your pieces. Kiln setters protect the kiln shelf from glaze runs and contamination. Setters can be made out of any clay body that is the same firing temperature as the clay you are using. For example for BRT that is being fired to a stoneware temperature, we ask that you make your own kiln setters from a basic stoneware clay such as PS3010. Kiln setters should cover the surface area of the kiln that your piece will encompass. You can create a flat sheet that is bigger than your item to sit the BRT piece on when firing. You will need to bisque fire your setter before using it in a stoneware firing. If your piece is really large, you can always make a few smaller setters to elevate your piece. Image 1 & 2 Damaged kiln shelf. Image 3 Our kiln tech arose, grinding damaged shelves Image 4 example of some basic setters.

04.01.2022 Term 1 students who still need to collect your pieces, work can be collected Monday-Friday 9.00-5.00 and Saturday 9.00-4.00. One of our retail staff will be able to show you where your pieces are located.

04.01.2022 Due to the limitations of not being able to work in the space at NPS, and having his wheel for only a set duration of time, Mark has spent the majority of his residency focusing on throwing, and will have 40 completed vases by the end of his residency. Mark has said he will allow himself time once the residency ends to focus his attention on the glazing of work produced, and planning how to bring his vessels more to life. His initial glazing thoughts are tending to stick to the black/grey/white palette for some of the forms with angles.
