20.01.2022 Do I really need dental x-rays? People sometimes question the necessity of dental x-rays but you may be surprised to learn how much valuable information is contained in them. Dental x-rays are recommended to be carried out once every 2 years. Dental x-rays help us assess the health of your teeth in a way that is not possible with the naked-eye alone... X-rays can help with: Detecting areas of decay that may not be visible in the mouth, especially between the teeth where cavities often develop Detecting problems with existing fillings, crowns, bridges or root canals that may lay under the surface Detecting the presence and severity of gum disease and bone-loss Assisting in the planning and preparation of implants, Invisalign, dentures, root canals, restorations and extractions Safety: You may notice that the dentist and dental nurse leave the room to take the x-ray. This is simply to avoid over-exposure of dental staff You may only have x-rays once every two years but your dental professional is often taking multiple x-rays per day Dental x-rays involve extremely low radiation exposure roughly the same amount of radiation exposure as that from a short flight Nevertheless, x-rays will only be taken unless absolutely necessary in the course of your dental care. #dentaleducation #dentist #melbournedentist #smile #oralhealtheducation #dentalcare

19.01.2022 Your tongue can tell you a lot about your health! Changes to your tongue can signal conditions such as nutritional deficiencies, diabetes, poor oral hygiene, chronic immune conditions and cancer. At your routine dental visit, the dentist examines your tongue and surrounding tissues to look for any changes.... It is important to look at your own tongue regularly at home to look for changes to colour and texture and consult your dentist if you have any concerns. Lastly, the mouth contains billions of bacteria with many of those bacteria living on your tongue’s rough surface. To remove odour-causing bacteria on your tongue, simply brush your tongue with your toothbrush or use a tongue scraper every time you brush your teeth. #dentalhealth #tonguehealth #oraleducation #melbournedentist #dentist #funfacts
16.01.2022 Should I be using a manual or electric toothbrush So what does the science say? Studies show us electric toothbrushes are slightly more effective at reducing plaque and gingivitis than manual toothbrushing... This is likely because the electric brush is less dependent on brushing correctly as the electric motion does some of the work for you It is still important to remember that with either type, you need to aim the toothbrush bristles at the gum line and use gentle pressure so as not to wear away the gum or enamel You must also remember to floss to remove plaque from between your teeth where your toothbrush cannot reach What does that mean for you? An electric toothbrush may be of benefit however a manual brush will also do a great job with the right technique and for the recommended two minutes At the end of the day, buy the toothbrush you are going to use every day, twice a day #melbournedentist #dentaleducation #dentist #electrictoothbrush #manualtoothbrush
14.01.2022 Got a toothbrush that looks a bit like this? Did you know: worn brushes are less effective at removing plaque as the bristles start to bend and miss important areas old or worn toothbrushes rapidly accumulate bacteria due to the moist environment.... What to do? replace your toothbrush regularly (and after being sick) use GENTLE pressure- A toothbrush that wears out too quickly is often the result of applying too much pressure #northenddentalco #northcotedentist #northcote #3070

03.01.2022 Lemon juice and apple cider vinegar have been used for centuries as a health aid but did you know they can damage your teeth? Acidic food and drinks can put you at risk of tooth erosion, a condition where the protective layer of enamel wears away and becomes thinner. It can then expose underlying dentine (which is yellow in colour) and cause you to experience tooth sensitivity.... So how can you drink lemon juice and apple cider vinegar without damaging your teeth? Mix with water to reduce the acidity Drink through a straw to bypass the teeth Consume with a meal if possible Rinse your mouth out with water straight after Do not brush your teeth for 30 minutes after consuming lemon juice or apple cider vinegar Use a soft toothbrush and gentle pressure when brushing your teeth Dental erosion is irreversible meaning your enamel doesn’t grow back, so prevention is key!
02.01.2022 Good news everyone! Level 3 restrictions have been downgraded and we will be able to resume most dental treatments As always, we will continue to implement strict infection control measures for the safety of our patients and staff... Contact us today for an appointment on 94864455 We look forward to seeing you soon
