01.01.2022 Chookas to: SAFIA, Lime Cordiale, BOO SEEKA, Illy, The Jungle Giants, Violent Soho, Thelma Plum, The Rubens, Peking Duk, Ocean Alley, Missy Higgins, Jack River, Hayden James, G Flip, DMA's ChillinIt420, Casii Williams for your performances BASSINTHEGRASS. In case you didn't know "chookas" is an Australian word, used in the theatre to wish people luck, much like "break a leg". It's a uniquely Australian term and came into use during the early days of J.C. Williamson’s d...ominance of the theatre scene in Australia. In the early 1900s chicken was regarded as a treat. As most shows paid fees depending on the box-office take, a full house meant that the performers would be able to afford a chicken meal. The cry ‘chook it is’ was shortened to ‘chookas’, and eventually used by performers to wish each other a successful show regardless of the number of people in the auditorium. So chookas to you all! And also to House of Darwin who created a rad t-shirt to celebrate and to Abbie Chatfield who's also attending and showcasing the best of Darwin.
