25.01.2022 Sunday means recipe sharing time! This is one of Merilee's favourites- Cauliflower and broccoli soup. Other than being very tasty, this recipe is high in the Brassica vegetables cauliflower and broccoli which are high in Vitamin K for bone health, Vitamin C a great antioxidant which also supports collagen for your skin, and glucosinates that may help lower your risk of cancer. https://www.drlibby.com/recipes/brilliant-brassica-soup/

24.01.2022 Do you suffer from heavy menstrual bleeding? Our periods should not be ruling our life, forcing days off from work and multiple trips to the bathroom! A healthy period should not cause huge amounts of pain or discomfort- in fact, a normal period should be a bit of a non event. There are multiple causes of heavy bleeding such as fibroids, low iron levels and a prostaglanding imbalance. These are so effectively treated using herbal and nutritional medicines so call us for a chat if you want more information. Here is a great blog on the topic- https://www.larabriden.com/natural-treatment-for-very-heav/
24.01.2022 It’s a simple as eating more vegetables! In research published in The Lancet, they found a diet high in fibre reduced the risk of a wide range of potentially life-threatening conditions, including heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure. https://www.abc.net.au//fibre-has-big-benefits-an/10891844
23.01.2022 This week it was World Contraception Day - we know from the Australian Bureau of Statistics that two thirds of Australian women aged 18 to 49 either use some method of temporary contraception, or have permanent contraceptive protection. I think it is fair to say that sometimes the choice of contraception can seem a little limited especially if you do not want to take a hormonal birth control. So we at NBHF are quite taken by a non hormonal birth control option called Daysy - ...it is a digital device which learns about your cycle by you taking your temperature under the tongue each morning and confirming menstruation when necessary. The best bit is that Daysy reaches an effectiveness of 99.3% - yay! It has a colour coding system that displays fertile and infertile days - so useful if you are trying not to conceive or if you would like to conceive. Anyway, the kind folk at Daysy are offering 15% off to celebrate World Contraception Day (ends midnight 2/10/17) quote NBHF15 http://www.ladycomp.com.au See more
23.01.2022 Research shows that drinking alcohol can damage sperm effecting semen volume and creating more abnormal shape sperm. 22.01.2022 A new study by researchers at Southern Cross University has found favourable evidence for Naturopathic medicine in the treatment of a wide range of chronic conditions after assessing its clinical benefits. Its findings demonstrate the effectiveness of Naturopathic medicine in a wide range of chronic conditions including cardiovascular disorders, musculoskeletal pain, type 2 diabetes, PCOS, depression, anxiety, chronic pain, hepatitis C, menopausal symptoms, bipolar disorder, ...asthma and in increasing cancer survival time. It places under the spotlight the Government’s decision to remove private health fund rebates for Naturopathy on the basis of an outdated, limited review conducted by the National Health & Medical Research Council (NHMRC) in 2013. https://www.yourhealthyourchoice.com.au//world-first-stu/
22.01.2022 A really interesting study that shows the long term health effects of birth interventions and long term childhood illness - "Across the board, "the results indicated that the odds of a child developing a short or longer term health problem significantly increased if there was a medical intervention at the time of their birth." Of course sometimes intervention is necessary, and often it is not - hope this will give OBs, midwives and birth care - food for thought...and also that this is included in the risk benefit assessment that women and their partners discuss with their health care provider around their birth options. https://www.uclan.ac.uk//world-first-study-links-birth-int n

16.01.2022 Hayley is back to clinic this month after maternity leave so it seems fitting that she is blogging on the importance of the 4th trimester. Most new mums will have heard about the ‘fourth trimester’ and will think of it as the time that their new baby is adjusting to life outside of the womb. Those first 3 months after your baby is born are equally a time of change and challenge for mums. Mothers need care and attention to enable health and recovery, in the same way that our ...babies are given time to adjust to life in the outside world. In our culture this time of caring for the mother’s health is often overlooked and we are expected to be back to our normal self within a few weeks of giving birth. However, mums need time to reach optimal health and recovery post birth and pregnancy so we can feel well and healthy to care for our bus. Hayley consults from Northern beaches health & fertility on Tuesdays and Fridays. http://nbhealthandfertility.com.au/blog/fourth-trimester See more

15.01.2022 RESEARCH ALERT! Research being conducted by La Trobe University and the Hudson Institute of Medical Research is aiming for the ultimate goal of creating personalised medicine or supplements to improve successful implantation during IVF, or in cases where the cause of infertility is caused by failed implantation, to allow a woman to bypass IVF completely. Breakthroughs may be possible because of the discovery that the lining of the womb and the embryo communicate with each oth...er through tiny bubble-like structures called extracellular vesicles. In cases where the implantation was not successful, the vesicles may not be sending the right signals. It’s hoped researchers may be able to develop treatments or supplements that would change that signalling to allow a successful implantation. https://www.smh.com.au//the-research-that-could-finally-im

13.01.2022 In case you haven't seen the news - the government has announced a natural therapy review acknowledging that there is key evidence from 2014 onwards for a number of natural therapies including naturopathy. The not so good news is that the review will take a year to conduct - it would be nice to just see a reversal of the act that took effect on 1st April, but this is a good start at least to getting your private health fund rebates back on at least some of the natural therapies including naturopathy. 12.01.2022 Fish oils have been in the news a lot lately and we have been particularly excited about this Cochrane Review published on Friday, that showed that omega-3 fish oils reduced preterm birth (>37 weeks) by 11% and early preterm birth (>34 weeks) by 42%. Fantastic :-) The advice for pregnant ladies is to take a good quality fish oil supplement that gives 500 mg of the omega-3 fatty acid, DHA daily. A supplement makes sense when you consider that 80% of Australians do not get their recommended 2-3 serves of fish each week. Talk to us to find out which fish oil we recommend in pregnancy and why. And here is the link to the Cochrane Review if you would like to read more for yourself - enjoy https://www.cochrane.org//PREG_omega-3-fatty-acid-addition

11.01.2022 We all need more joy in our lives - Melinda Rushe writes beautifully about the Buddhist practice of 'Gladdening the mind' which helps us practice gratitude and take our focus from the harder aspects of our lives. Melinda talks about this practice from the perspective of trying to conceive, but this is for all who want to welcome more joy into their lives. I love the part of doing more things that make our heart SING - yes indeed. My heart sings when i am in nature, when i see the moon rise, the sunset (or rise), and when i am inspired by beautiful art or a movie that is emotionally smart. What makes your heart sing? 10.01.2022 NO MORE NITS....YAY!! I had a very interesting experience this morning. I have used many different nit treatments on my children, all of which promise to kill off both nits and eggs only to live in frustration as the cycle continues, and my daughter is constantly reinfested. Deb from No Nits Now was amazing. She taught me how to get rid of the nits and eggs using no chemicals. She has some great videos on her website that can help educate us all. www.nonitsnow.com.au
10.01.2022 You have to be buried under a rock to have missed the buzz about the gut microbiome this year- it would seem a healthy gut microbiome can make us sleep better, feel happier, be more vital in our old age and buck the obesity trend. Listening - i bet you are... Read this article from The Guardian to find out more. Naturopaths have always known that there is a massive link between the health of our guts and the health of our minds, which is why we always pay attention to gut hea...lth with every client at every consult. Probiotics are one thing, but the magic seems to happen when probiotics are taken in combination with prebiotics (essentially fibres which gut bugs love). There are some nifty evidence based prebiotic fibres that we have in clinic (one in fact that this article talks about). Also, we love to enthuse about eating prebiotic foods: asparagus, lentils, leeks and Jerusalem artichokes. Get in touch with us to find out about how we can help your gut micro biome thrive. Love to hear your experience of probiotics and prebiotics, please share. https://www.theguardian.com//microbiome-gut-health-digesti See more
10.01.2022 More on the gut microbiome. This time how different microbial clusters in babies were found to relate to cognitive intelligence. The study analysised feacal samples from normally developing 1-year-olds to determine the bacterial composition of their gut. At age 2 years, some babies scored significantly better on cognitive tests than others. The differences were found to relate to the bacterial clusters that had been identified in the babies' gut microbiomes. NBHF comment - a baby's gut microbes are particularly changeable up until the age of 2 influenced by the microbiome of the mother at delivery, the mode of delivery, the length of breastfeeding, weaning, foods they recieve and the environment they grow up in. https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/890461

09.01.2022 'New research led by Western Sydney University found that 15 per cent of young, healthy mothers in NSW have had an induction of labour with no medical reason given. The study looked at 474,652 births and discounted nearly a million births to make sure only low-risk mothers under 35 were counted. The three-year study led by professor of midwifery Hannah Dahlen also found long-term impacts on children. "We found in induced births there was more neonatal birth trauma, more need for resuscitation, more need to care for neonatal intensive care and ongoing respiratory infections all up till age 16," she said.' 06.01.2022 Count the number of cleaning products you use in your house. Do you know what chemicals they contain? And did you know that manufacturers are not required to list all ingredients? So whether it is an air freshener, polish, carpet cleaner, fabric softener, toilet cleaner or mould remover stop a second to take a closer look and consider a natural option. After all, we do know that many ingredients in cleaning products are linked to health concerns including asthma, neurological... damage and cancer. Natural options are cheaper, better for you and kinder to the environment. A few simple ingredients can help you keep your home clean and toxin free. 1. Distilled white vinegar mild acid that kills germs and mould, neutralises odours , dissolves grease and softens your laundry 2. Lemons cuts grease, can lighten stains and removes tarnish 3. Bi-carb soda - absorbs odours, loosens grease and a good addition to laundry detergents if you want improved action such as lifting stains. 4. Vegetable based castile soap made from plant oil and acts to lift dirt and grease so it can be washed away, use it for dishes, counters and laundry and as a hand wash mixes well with baking soda when you want a heavy duty cleaner. 5. Essential oils use sparingly and with caution, 1-2 drops of peppermint, eucalyptus or lavender to improve the smell of your cleaner. 04.01.2022 Gelatin Gummies are wonderful for gut healing and as our digestive systems are frequently under stress as a result of an onslaught of modern processed foods, environmental toxins, high antibiotic usage and alcohol consumption there is no better time to get your Gummie on. Gelatin is a high amino acid source, it helps the body to repair collagen sources such as joints, ligaments, hair, nails and skin as well as helping our guts heal. Tip - gelatin comes from ground hooves/bon...es so you want to be extremely fussy about the source - visit your health food store for a grassfed gelatin option Ingredients 3 tablespoons gelatin powder 1 cups of fruit e.g. raspberries, blueberries (frozen organic) or 1 cups of freshly squeezed orange or grapefruit juice tbl rice malt syrup or maple Method Dissolve the gelatin in 1/3 cup of cold water and let it sit for 4 minutes to become gel-like. For berries heat the fruit and sweetener in a saucepan until the fruit has softened. Remove from the heat, puree (using a blender or stick mixer) and stir in gelatin. For the juice heat gently warming and stir in the gelatin. Pour into a 10 x 15 cm square glass or plastic dish. Refrigerate for 1 hour then cut into squares. Store In the fridge in an airtight container for up to 1 week.
04.01.2022 Alison takes to the podium at the Naturopath and Herbalists Association of Australia conference this weekend to share her research on herbal medicines used for weight loss. She reviews green tea, garcinia, white kidney bean, ephedra and more looking for an effect of a 2kg loss over course of usage - finding that clinical evidence for herbal medicines are lacking - more trials are needed. Alison’s conclusion ‘there is no magic bullet’ So diet, exercise and lifestyle are still the bedrock of weight loss management.

02.01.2022 6 winter warming tips 1. Eat warm hearty soups, wholegrains and roasted nuts are good on cold days 2. Enjoy beans, seaweeds and steamed winter greens 3. Foods with bitter principles are appropriate for winter, examples include turnip, lettuce, endive, asparagus, rye, oats, quinoa and amaranth 4. Drink roasted dandelion and chicory root, also bitter, and you will find this as a coffee substitute in most health food stores... 5. Include some naturally salty foods such as miso, tamari, seaweeds, sea salt, millet and barley, as a note most of us over do the salt, so cutting out the over-salted, processed food will allow you to enjoy these other salty wholefoods 6. Freshen up your winter dishes with chopped herbs and fresh green leaves Want some winter warming food inspiration ....http://nbhealthandfertility.com.au/blog/winter-warmers See more
