13.02.2022 Hi Derek Dwyer Thank you for the question Can anyone please tell us what waterproofing and tiling requirements/suggestions are or under Building Code for semi enclosed balcony is ? (Eg scree or cement base highly recommended/best practice ?) Many thanks... Derek The Australian Standard referring to this AS4654.2 for external areas. It is a bit of a loaded question- you need a wholistic view to come up with the right answer. The movement of the substructure expansion and contraction will effect the tiles you are installing and the way it is installed must cater for this movement. The standard does not deal with this. The most important piece of information is - what is the substrate it is going on? How much room have you got to the internal floor level? Is there room for a tile bed with fall? Is this going on the ground? Timber framed structure or concrete structure? Is the deck above another living area? Best practice which I have been doing since the mid 90's is- Flexible waterproofing on base- Reinforcement sheet in cement bed- Flexible waterproofing on top of cement bed- Angles around edges to prevent watermarks on the face of the deck edge- Expansion joints every 6m at least to control cracking. Other items of note- A/ 60mm freeboard required from top of tiles to overflow water to internal. B/ Manufacturers recommendation for compatibility of waterproofing. C/ Moisture content in tile bed when waterproofing on top. D/ Masonry code for expansion joints. E/ Prevention of salts and lime escaping from tile bed. Complicated answer for the first question I know but this is a great example of the complexity of making correct building decisions. I hope it is able to help you.
