25.01.2022 Sandgate Cemetery was originally located a long distance from various villages, and access was by river and road, prior to the Mortuary train. Older cemeteries dating from the early settlement of Newcastle after 1804 were relocated to Sandgate to form Sandgate Cemetery. #Sandgate #Newcastle

22.01.2022 Angel statues seem to express a wide range of emotions. An angel’s facial expression may convey grief, hope and empathy. The poses of the angels at the cemetery may offer mourners a sense of comfort. Aside from an angel’s pose, the objects they carry also express significant meaning. Most angels are depicted holding flowers, musical instruments, or crosses. This beautiful angel wears a unique crown featuring a star upon her head. #Angel #AngelStatue #Heavens #Symbolism #Cemetery #History

20.01.2022 Eucalyptus, Corymbia and Angophora are three genera within the Myrtaceae family that are all known as gum trees due to the gooey sap they exude. Eucalyptus trees have a unique strategy to survive fires that are common in Australian forests and bushlands. Inside the tree and inside the roots, the Eucalyptus has dormant shoots. These will germinate under the influence of hormones that are triggered by heat, such as the heat of a fire. This protective mechanism allows the tree to regenerate after a bush fire. #ExploreNorthernCemeteries #GumTrees #Eucalyptus #EucalyptusTrees #Angophora #AngophoraTrees #BushfiresNSW #EucalyptusLeaves #Myrtaceae #Corymbia #Nature

13.01.2022 Lest We Forget In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky... The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. - John McCrae, "In Flanders Fields" #LestWeForget #RemembranceDay #RemembranceDay2020

08.01.2022 Herbert Miller Challis is interred at Macquarie Park. Herbert and his brother Frederick registered Challis Brothers as tanners in 1905. Their tannery operations were located on Quandong Street, now called Douglas Street, Willoughby. They also owned a shop at 9-13 Kippax Street, where they traded as leather merchants. A few months later, in April 1906, Challis Brothers were among the first leather merchants to exhibit at Sydney’s Royal Agricultural Show where they displayed their kip and tweed goods. After 25 years of booming business, on 6 February 1930, a major fire destroyed the tannery, and it did not open again. #ExploreNorthernCemeteries #MacquariePark #History #CemeteryHistory #Cemetery #Tannery #Willoughby #WilloughbyHistory #NSWHistory

05.01.2022 This monument commemorates the Sisters of Mercy, Monte Sant’ Angelo, North Sydney. Elizabeth McQuoin (also known as Mother Mary Ignatius) was the founder of the Sisters of Mercy, North Sydney. She arrived in Sydney from England on 15 November 1865 with her companions. They were initially meant to work in Bathurst, but began their Australian journey at Church Hill (close to present-day Wynyard Station). They worked for a time in The Rocks and Parramatta, until eventually takin...g possession of a cottage at St Leonards used as respite for the Sisters in 1875. They found that people in the area wanted instruction for their children. The Sisters began to teach, but a more suitable property was required for the expanding needs. With the help of a friend, "Masalou" in Miller Street, North Sydney was purchased, and the Sisters took possession of it in 1879. They established a day and boarding school for girls. Eventually the convent and college were named "Monte Sant' Angelo" and the convent became the Mother House and Novitiate for the North Sydney Mercies. This Celtic cross commemorates the Sisters that rest here at Macquarie Park Cemetery & Crematorium. #Sisters #SistersOfMercy #Nuns #MonteSantAngelo #CatholicFaith #CatholicNun #SydneyCatholics #MacquariePark #NorthRyde #AlwaysCaring #NorthernCemeteries #Diversity #History

03.01.2022 Totems are a natural object or creature that is believed to have spiritual significance and can be adopted by particular groups as an emblem or symbol. The Angophora tree was a special tree to the Gai-mariagal people who are the Traditional Custodians of the area in North Ryde. The Angophora is an ascension tree, a place where the spirits go up and down from this earthly plane. At the time of pregnancy, a woman would sit at the base of the tree and wait for the spirit of her... child to enter her belly into her unborn child. At the other end of the life cycle, when someone passes, the body is wrapped in bark and placed in the large branches up the tree, to allow the spirit of the person to return to the heavens. 03.01.2022 Field of Mars has been in use since 1890. As part of the original Field of Mars Common, it was cleared by unemployed people as part of a Government program in 1884. Field of Mars retains a historical aesthetic alongside some very tall trees! #FieldOfMars #History #Ryde #Cemetery

03.01.2022 Due to COVID-19 government regulations on gatherings, we have cancelled or postponed all historical tours and events which included the Gore Hill Memorial Cemetery Diggers Day Tour. A message from the Friends of Gore Hill, The victims of World War 1 are memorialised in many places in Australia and overseas, there are 120 memorialised at Gore Hill Memorial Cemetery. It is particularly moving the way that, although none of these soldiers are buried here, they are joined with ...their families being listed on headstones. Many of these soldiers have their stories recorded in the Gore Hill Biographies and are reprinted in the Friends of Gore Hill Cemetery Newsletters. Their stories in the biographies are very detailed including addresses (such as Pymble, North Sydney), schools (such as Fort Street, Shore, Barker), occupations (such as Wool Classer, Clerk), their place of employment, (such as Bank of New South Wales, Sugar Planter) and the battles that they fought in (Gallipoli, Fromelles, Pozieres, Bullecourt, Passchendaele, and Villiers-Bretonneux.) They also include place of burial (Villiers-Bretonneux, Fromelles), and in there were no remains places of memorialisation,(I dont understand this) (such as Lone Pine and the Menin Gate.). We hope that this tour will take place in the future. Anzac Day has great meaning in bringing all Australians together. Lest We Forget

02.01.2022 A special Mortuary Station was built in Newcastle, to service Sandgate Cemetery when it was still new, providing facilities for coffins and mourners. Trams conveyed funerals from the local suburbs to the Station, to a purpose-built platform known as ‘General Cemetery’. The station was actually within the cemetery and opened on 15 January 1881. The station was renamed Sandgate Cemetery on 1 January 1890. The Sandgate Cemetery railway spur originally curved off the mainline just north of Wallsend Rd and served the Newcastle region for more than 100 years until the last train ran on 13 October 1985. The Sandgate line was the last of the branch lines that served cemeteries in NSW. #SandgateCemetery #Trains #RailwayLine #MortuaryStation #History #Newcastle #AlwaysCaring

02.01.2022 Ahh, Jacaranda season! Don’t you just love when the purple haze of these trees fill the skies? Many people often mistake the Jacaranda Mimosifolia as a native species.
