22.01.2022 Northern Futures opened doors for me through their contacts, I probably wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them. Anthony, Northern Futures graduate. The truth is that Anthony worked hard and took hold of the opportunities at hand. When Anthony came to Northern Futures in 2016, he was 20 years old and had recently relocated to Geelong to support his sister. Eager to secure full time ongoing work, Anthony disengaged early from high school to undertake a mechanical apprenti...ceship which he was unable to complete. The decision to relocate and factor of unemployment left Anthony in a difficult situation. He was also suffering the challenge of not having enough practice hours to obtain a driver’s licence as his family and social network had been left behind in Melbourne. Referred by MatchWorks, Anthony enrolled in a Certificate II in Warehousing Operations offered by Northern Futures in partnership with The Gordon. He gained new skills, a forklift licence and started to build up his driving hours through the TAC's 'L2P' program that Northern Futures connected him with. Following the course, Anthony secured a six-week internship at Cotton On where Anthony’s Manager said that his commitment and determination continued to shine as he rode his bicycle to work early every morning. In September 2016 a wonderful succession of events took place. Anthony was offered a Machine Operator position at Quality Wool. He also obtained his driver’s licence and purchased a car with the money he had saved. Anthony has now been employed by Quality Wool for the last four years and is aiming to buy a home of his own one day. He is a great worker and a great kid. He will be with us as long as he wants to. 20.01.2022 Though it may seem cold, dark and rainy at the moment, remember that there is a beautiful ray of sunshine waiting behind every cloud.
19.01.2022 Together we encourage our clients to discover their strengths, explore, grow and take charge of their future.
19.01.2022 A timely midweek reminder!
18.01.2022 Our Engineering course has commenced and guess what - it's online! With the sudden global shift away from the classroom, it is important that we adapt to new methods of learning so that we can continue to support and empower our individuals with the essential skills and knowledge required to enter the workforce.
16.01.2022 We can transform our brains, bodies, relationships and experience of the world by the simple act of looking up. The Look Up Project, established by Dr Fiona Kerr & Lekki Maze respects all humans as unique creatures, each innately equipped with extraordinary capacities for insight and imagination. At Northern Futures we are very inspired by this idea! Look Up is a reminder for us all - to engage more fully with the world around us and the people we share it with. T...urning left instead of right. Walking more slowly. Noticing the details. Sitting still. Giving time. Creating space. Breathing out. Daydreaming... Looking up. Looking at each other. Being here. Being here together. Read more about the Look Up Project at www.lookup.org.au See more
15.01.2022 At Northern Futures our learning experience is unique as we focus on what it takes to move from just 'getting by' to 'getting ahead'. We extend a warm welcome to our Individual Support clients as they start their pre-course induction this week within a supportive online environment. Over the next few weeks we will be developing the foundations for study by looking closely at the journey ahead, seeing things from a different angle, and aiming towards a more positive future.
15.01.2022 A great initiative by Geelong Regional Libraries

As a member of parliament, and more recently in her former role as CEO of G21, Elaine’s experience and expertise has made a significant contribution to the northern suburbs and the broader Geelong community. We are privileged to have you join our Board, Elaine. We’re certain that your presence will make... a significant contribution to NFL and the community we serve. 11.01.2022 Kim's experience demonstrates that no matter what barriers, age, length of time and experience an individual has, there is always hope for a brighter future. When Gforce referred Kim to Northern Futures back in 2015, she had been out of the workforce for almost 20 years. Living as a young parent within a situation of conflict, disorder and instability left her with low self-esteem and a compulsion to put others before herself. Kim’s Northern Futures journey commenced wit...h the Getting Ahead personal development program and led on to the completion of a Certificate II Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways (Business Basics) in partnership with The Gordon. With support from Northern Futures and VIVA Energy’s scholarship program, Kim was able to undertake a six-week internship with the City of Greater Geelong which gave her hands-on work experience and built her confidence through positive reinforcement and routine. After facing several disappointments, ups and downs, trials and challenges, it was difficult for Kim to believe that she was successful in securing a role at Barwon Health North. My self-doubts kicked in during my training period, not knowing if I could cope with it at all. However, my amazing team at Northern Futures had kept in contact with me all the way through my interviews, my training and ultimately starting my position. Kim has been working at Barwon Health North for the past ten months. I’m thriving and continuously learning new things every day. - Kim See more

03.01.2022 Meet Pamela Pear, a recent graduate of our Individual Support Certificate III course! Pamela has shared some thoughts about her experience with us during these challenging times - "It's a bittersweet feeling to have graduated. It was such a great course and I really enjoyed it, so I am sad that it's over. I am very happy and proud of my achievements, and wish I hadn't waited so long to do the course! Covid-19 threw us all a huge curveball. Remote learning took a while... to get used to and it was challenging at times, but after a while it started to feel like normal. We were lucky to have spent some time in the classroom before transitioning to remote learning, which gave us the chance to get to know each other. In all, I am so happy that I chose to learn with Northern Futures. Everyone was so friendly, supportive and accepting. They were also very flexible, which took a lot of pressure off if someone was having a difficult time. We were all made to feel like part of the 'Northern Futures Family'. If I was to call 10 times a day needing help, I knew that someone would be there to help me. This gave me the confidence to successfully complete my course and for that I will be forever grateful. I am so happy and surprised about how quickly I was able to secure a position after graduating. Even after being away from the workforce for some time, I was able to further my education and gain employment in an industry that I have so much love for." Pamela has successfully obtained a position as a Health Care Worker at Barwon Health's McKellar Centre.
03.01.2022 If it wasn’t for Northern Futures, I think I’d still be looking for a job. - Nathan, Northern Futures graduate. Before connecting with Northern Futures through Matchworks & genU, Nathan had completed impressive qualifications in IT but was struggling to get work. I had been applying for many, many jobs online. I was able to get phone interviews and a few in-person interviews, but was unsuccessful in actually getting work. I thought I was doing the right thing studying ...Information Technology; however without work experience, I couldn’t get my foot in the door. With the support of a scholarships from the Niall Family, Nathan completed a Certificate II in Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways (Business Basics) offered through a partnership between Northern Futures and The Gordon. Nathan went on to complete a six-week paid internship with Barwon Child Youth & Family Services. He was afterwards offered a traineeship supported by GForce which included a Certificate III in Information Digital Media and Technology. This provided Nathan with the hands-on experience he needed to secure ongoing employment. Nathan’s traineeship was interrupted as he underwent treatment for a serious illness. During this time he was supported by Barwon Child Youth & Family Services, Northern Futures, Gforce and Matchworks. Nathan has since come full circle in developing his confidence and skills and has been employed by genU since November 2018. He has also successfully obtained a driver’s licence and car, with a future goal of buying his own home. I feel pleased with my life, myself, and future. I now have the job I love, and it also enables opportunities for growth by enabling me to upskill and complete higher qualifications. See more
