24.01.2022 Northern Health Foundation Patron and Board Member, Trudi Hay, recently hosted her annual High Tea to raise money for Northern Health Cancer Services. Trudi has been a dedicated supporter for over ten years. Every year, she hosts a High Tea event to raise funds to support patients undergoing cancer treatment - something very dear to her heart. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year the event was held virtually. "While planning for this event, I was very conscious of the fact... that people are out of work at the moment and doing it tough, so people didn't need to donate to be able to participate in the High Tea. It was more about getting the word out and raising awareness of cancer," Trudi said. Guest speakers, Wanda Stelmach, Chief Medical Officer and Melissa Gwynne, Day Oncology Nurse Unit Manager, spoke on the challenges of cancer, general health and wellbeing, and about caring for our community during the pandemic. Over the years, Trudi has raised over $60,000. This year, her High Tea raised an amazing $11,000. Funds will go towards an ECG machine for our Day Oncology Unit, and care packs for patients using our new chemotherapy at-home service. Thank you Trudi for your wonderful ongoing support! The new service officially launched on 9 November and has been very well received by patients already. Kaylene Probst, NOAH@Home Liaison Nurse, explained t...he innovative service means patients no longer have to travel for appointments, there will be less stress on family who have to take time off work to bring their loved ones in for treatment and patients are more relaxed in their homes, she said. We are very excited to be able to offer a program like this, as it enables for greater use of our nursing skills and gives patients the opportunity to decide where they would prefer to have their treatment, Kaylene said. 14.01.2022 As part of our NAIDOC Week celebrations, Northern Health is pleased to launch www.bilang.nh.org.au - a Directory of Aboriginal Services in the North. ‘Bilang’ means ‘Straight Talk’ in Woi wurrung, the language spoken by the Wurundjeri-(balluk/Clan). The development of the Bilang Directory is a recommendation from the Northern Health Aboriginal Advisory Committee to ensure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have the right information about necessary services, or...ganisations and networks to effectively manage their health and wellbeing in the future. The Directory was created after extensive consultation with Aboriginal community members who access services and programs in the North and North East Melbourne areas. The Directory was funded by the Hume Whittlesea Primary Care Partnership (HWPCP). Max Lee, Chief Executive Officer HWPCP, said, The Northern Health Bilang 'Straight Talk' Directory is part of our long-term shared commitment to ensuring Aboriginal people can access culturally safe health services locally." The launch of Bilang ‘Straight Talk’ is really exciting for the community in the North and represents another way that we can acknowledge NAIDOC Week," says Briana Baass, Chief Allied Health Officer, Northern Health. #NAIDOC2020 #wearenorthern #safekindtogether

13.01.2022 November is Lung Cancer Awareness month, an important initiative to raise awareness of the condition and break one common misconception that lung cancer only affects smokers. Dr Katharine See, Head of Respiratory, explains lung cancer doesn’t just affect smokers: one in five people with lung cancer have never smoked. Lung cancer affects both men and women, and statistics show twice as many women die of lung cancer each year than of breast cancer, and three times as many me...n die of lung cancer than of prostate cancer. During the pandemic, the number of new diagnosis of cancer has dropped about 27 per cent, so it’s really important that people don’t delay acting on their symptoms, she said. Dr See explains Northern Health has a fantastic multidisciplinary lung cancer service. In a single clinic, patients can be seen by the respiratory specialists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and thoracic surgeons, all in one location. And we are also incredibly lucky to have someone like Alison Hirth, Lung Mass Nurse Coordinator, who can coordinate patient care and is a key resource for patients during a very stressful time. Having a single point of contact gives patients some control over their diagnosis and treatment, Dr See added. Katharine and Alison agree that the earlier the team can make the diagnosis and commence treatment, the better the outcome for the patient. If you have symptoms such as an unexplained cough that doesn’t go away, or you are coughing blood, losing weight without trying, experience chest and or shoulder pain, night sweats or unexplained shortness of breath, please don’t delay seeking medical help.

12.01.2022 Through our new Virtual Emergency Department, our emergency nurse Stella and her colleagues have seen almost 600 patients so far! If you live in the northern suburbs and have a non-life threatening emergency, head to nh.org.au/ed to talk to our ED nurses and doctors, every day 1 pm - 9.30 pm. #wearenorthern #safekindtogether

As part of this service, we are aiming to improve patient health outcomes, recovery, minimise bleed...ing and any other risks. We will be reviewing inpatients with complex anticoagulation needs and following them up as outpatients early post discharge. As pharmacists, we will go through their appropriate medications and make sure they are all safe and appropriate, and that patients understand how to take medications, she explained. This new service marks a collaboration milestone between our pharmacy and haematology departments. To read more, head to bit.ly/3nJDATP #wearenorthern #safekindtogether

04.01.2022 Happy Allied Heath Professional’s Day! Jim Sayer, Director of Allied Health, says he is really proud to lead the team at Northern Health. "Our 400 staff in allied health are all passionate about improving the quality of our patients' lives," he said.... Hien Pham, Speech Pathologist, said she enjoys working in allied health because they work as part of a multi-disciplinary team. "We look at all aspects of patient's wellbeing and life - and it's great to improve someone's quality of life. I am inspired when I see my patients improve their communication after a stroke and when I support them to communicate on the wards," she said. Her colleagues Elaina Vatcky, Orthotist, Bond Romeo-Mutch, Social Worker and Gee Kasmawan, Occupational Therapist, agree that helping patients achieve their independence, working in a supportive team, and improving someone's quality of life are the main reasons they choose their profession and enjoy coming to work every day. 02.01.2022 Last year, Northern Health created the ‘Simulation Project’ to increase quality and safety of our care. Simulations act as system tests to allow teams to identify problems and come up with solutions. Dr Nancy Sadka, Emergency Physician, said the project started with the aim of using in-situ simulation. In-situ simulation means the simulation is performed in the clinical space, during clinical times," Dr Sadka said. When the COVID-19 pandemic began, the simulation team shif...ted their focus to finding opportunities for improvement in our pandemic response. The demand grew so quickly that the team conducted 13 simulations in just two months, compared to their initial aim of completing one a month. The project has also grown to include many aspects of the hospital including critical care, general medical, general surgical, obstetrics and paediatrics. We’ve had a great response from staff who are asking for more and more exercises of this type, because staff feel that their voices get heard. These activities are also crucial for team building. Don’t forget that teams that practice together, perform well together. #wearenorthern #safekindtogether

01.01.2022 For some Dialysis at Home patients, these last seven months brought significant changes and improvement to their life and care. A number of renal patients hadn’t considered Dialysis at Home before the pandemic, but were now more open to switching to a home setting. One of these patients is Asiasiga Esekia, who is only 29 years old, and has been coming to hospital three times a week for the last two years. She was struggling to balance family life with two kids, a full time jo...b and dialysis at hospital. Before COVID-19, she was anxious to have dialysis at home, but the pandemic was a chance for her to change her mind. I started the home option two weeks ago and I already feel that I have the control of my life back. I am now there for my two kids, especially for my daughter who goes to school. I would recommend home dialysis to all patients, especially young ones you will have your whole day back, Asiasiga added.
