25.01.2022 Full time BRFL senior women’s Grand Final Arnhem Crows 13.15.93 defeated Katherine South 3.3.21 The second half started like the first did, with Freda Wosomo ki...cking her second goal for the match, with Arnhem Crows power forward Shekeine De Satge finally kicking her first major moments later after peppering the goals constantly to no avail up to that point. Eventually Katherine South found a way to goal, through the nimble footed Silvana Goldback-Eggert as she willed her way to a second goal, keeping her teams hopes of a come back alive. At the last break the Crows had built a very handy lead. Arnhem Crows 9.10.64 to Katherine South 3.3.21. With the final quarter underway, it was party time for the Crows as they kicked the first goal within seconds of the first ball up. NTFL stalwart Lisa Roberts was everywhere for the Crows, almost doing as she pleased through the midfield. Every time she touched the ball, something happened, and it wasn’t good news for the crocs, who put in all day but ultimately could not keep up with the run and carry of the Crows. In their first year of BRFL footy the Arnhem Crows have won it all, after finishing on top of the ladder during the regular season. Congratulations Crows! #territoryfooty

21.01.2022 IN THE NEWS INDIGENOUS Australians Minister Ken Wyatt will sign off on a deal to unlock $100 million from the Aboriginal Benefits Account to support job-creating projects in the NT. Minister Wyatt will formally announce the funding at an event hosted by the Northern Land Council at Darwin’s Hilton Hotel tonight.... I’m proud to announce that I will sign off on a Land Council proposal to unlock $100 million from the Aboriginal Benefits Account (ABA) to deliver job-creating projects through investment in infrastructure and projects that will ensure long term economic opportunity and viability of the indigenous estate, he said. The $1.2b ABA provides funding for one-off projects that benefit Aboriginal people living in the NT. Minister Wyatt said the $100m will be delivered over two tranches, the first focusing on immediate COVID-19 relief and job creation, and the second activating Indigenous-led projects. The first tranche of $60m will be invested in existing Aboriginal-owned community businesses and infrastructure. The funds will be used for building the skills of men and women on Country as well through rangers, learning on Country programs and workplace experiences. Minister Wyatt said the $60m would also be invested in small-scale infrastructure projects like fencing, water infrastructure and homelands upgrades to improve the potential of Aboriginal land. He said the money would also help with the co-investment and co-ordination of other government funding streams. Minister Wyatt is expected to also use his speech in Darwin tonight to take aim at the NT Government on remote housing. It is unacceptable that so many indigenous Australians in the Northern Territory live in overcrowded and inadequate housing, he said. This is despite the Commonwealth committing to providing the Northern Territory with $550 million over five years to deliver 1,950 new bedrooms, equivalent to 650 houses, in remote NT communities. The Northern Territory Government’s rollout of these houses is slow and it is unacceptable. The NT Government recently has set aside $490m for upgrading remote community housing in its 2020-21 budget. Minister Wyatt will spend the week in the NT with events in Alice Springs, Jabiru and Tennant Creek.

21.01.2022 OPEN FOR THE DRY! Cahills Crossing is deemed "safe to cross" with the water level down to .5m. It has been closed for more than five months due to the remarka...ble wet season - and as a result remote towns have run out of diesel and supplies are low at supermarkets. "Remember it is a very dangerous crossing, hundreds of cars have been washed away, and the river is loaded with crocodiles," Kakadu local Andy Ralph said. 16.01.2022 The NLC went to the Big Rivers Women's League Grand Final between the Arnhem Crows v Katherine South Crocs and took a few photos. The Waark Waark's ran out convincing winners 13:15 - 93 to the Croc's 3:3 - 21. Despite the blow-out in the score the Crocs gave the Waark waark's a run for their money in tough conditions, with high humidity and an air temperature of around 40c. ... A great afternoon of very willing footy!

16.01.2022 What’ll happen to the wattle? One Giant Leap Australia Foundation will be sending wattle seeds to the International Space Station this November in collaboration with JAXA. The seeds will be in space for 6 months and then return to Australia in time for Science Week 2021.... Robinson River School we’re selected to be part of this project and will receive wattle seeds that have been flown to space as well as seeds that have not. The seeds are from the same seed lot. These seeds will them be germinated and grown, with data being uploaded to the ‘What’ll happen to the wattle??!’ app. The project will take at least a year and it is envisaged that the wattle will then be planted and a map be made of all the ‘space wattle trees’ around Australia.

14.01.2022 PROJECT SEA DRAGON ILUA COMMITTEE GETS TOGETHER The Project Sea Dragon Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA) Committee - made up of Native Title Holders, NLC and Seafarms representatives - met in Kununurra last week. Seafarms is developing Project Sea Dragon, a prawn aquaculture project across several sites that includes a grow-out facility at Legune Station, which will produce black tiger prawns.... The Committee plays an important role in keeping track of each party's commitments under the ILUA, including cultural awareness issues, jobs, training, indigenous business opportunities and the Legune ranger program. This was the first time the Committee has been able to meet face to face since 2019 due to Covid-19 restrictions.

14.01.2022 May Bury joins the list of basketball legends. One of our own, May has been involved with the DBA since 1999 in a variety of roles including ticket office, referee rosters and volunteer team manager but is best known for her score table official duties. May has been a bench official in DBA domestic competitions, NBL games held in Darwin, school sports, Arafura Games and represented the NT at various Australian Championships.... One of the highest honors, May was recently awarded Life Membership with the Darwin Basketball Association for her commitment to the sport. May was inducted this year along with Benny Lew Fatt and the late Jack Ah Kit. Congratulations May, well deserved.

13.01.2022 Indigenous ranger groups in the western Top End are starting a joint carbon farming business to prevent damaging wildfires. The carbon abatement project is a joint effort between Thamarrurr Rangers, Asyrikarrak Kirim Rangers, and Wudicupildiyer Rangers. Traditional owner David Hewitt runs a bushfood business harvesting mainly Kakadu plums near the remote community of Wudicupildiyerr.... "We had a pretty rough first year, we picked about 300 kilograms of fruit, then we got burnt out," he said. "Second year, we picked four times that amount and we got burnt out again. So fire is our biggest threat out here." Mr Hewitt hopes the fire management and carbon abatement project boosts firefighting efforts and coordination in the land trust.

12.01.2022 Indigenous Australians Minister, the Hon Ken Wyatt AM MP, delivered the keynote address at an event hosted by the Northern Land Council in Darwin last night. In his address Minister Wyatt announced a $100 million NT Indigenous Economic Stimulus Package, developed in partnership with the four Northern Territory Land Councils, to provide immediate support for Aboriginal businesses and jobs in the NT. Indigenous businesses in the NT are struggling and the Morrison Government is... committed to supporting their recovery through the COVID-19, Minister Wyatt said. Working with the NT Land Councils, we are releasing $100 million from the Aboriginals Benefit Account (ABA) for Aboriginal people to create and sustain jobs through capital injections in ‘shovel-ready’ economic, social and infrastructure projects. The funding will be provided to Aboriginal businesses and infrastructure projects through the NT Land Councils, which will identify projects that are ready to commence now so the funding can flow into communities as soon as possible. Chair of the Northern Land Council, Samuel Bush-Blanasi, said the package is an example of Aboriginal people and Government coming together in shared decision-making. The four Land Councils in the NT are strong organisations that are well connected to all of their communities and know how ABA funding can be used effectively, Mr Bush-Blanasi said. By investing in small scale Aboriginal-owned infrastructure projects with short or no lead time, we can have an immediate and lasting effect on our people. Chair of the Central Land Council, Sammy Wilson, said the funding will be a welcome boost across the NT. This package will see projects that are ready to go be delivered, such as improving homeland infrastructure, upgrading ranger accommodation to look after country and create more jobs, building or repairing fences, or maintenance projects, all drawing on an Indigenous supply chain, Mr Wilson said.

Born and bred in the West Arnhem region, Jesse has spent the last year gaining valuable skills working after school in the Escarpment Restaurant at t...he Kakadu Crocodile Hotel. With the Jabiru Office getting busy with traditional owner consultations and permit enquires, Jesse joins the team as an Administration Officer and is looking forward to working on his Grandmother’s country and assisting countrymen and visitors alike. 11.01.2022 September was an action packed month for us here at the NLC with some of our deadly rangers gaining new skills to help them better care for their country. From operating and maintaining chainsaws to fabricating and repairing metal structures, the knowledge gained by the Wudicupildyerr and Malak Malak rangers will assist them to cut felled trees and perform small maintenance and fencing repairs in their communities. In the classroom, the Wagiman rangers learned all about the h...ealth of the water around them and how to undertake water sampling and testing. The Bulgul rangers came in to do training at Batchelor Institute as part of their Cert III in Conservation and Land Management.

10.01.2022 BIG LEARNING ON COUNTRY MEETING TAKES PLACE Learning on Country (LoC) Steering Committee members, proxies and Coordinators from 11 of the 15 LoC sites came together in Darwin this week to hear about the progress made on key program projects, despite the impact of Covid. On day one the Steering Committee members and proxies undertook governance training and provided feedback on key strategic projects. ... On day two all participants enthusiastically engaged in a workshop to capture a range of communication ideas and messages that will underpin the LoC Program Communication Strategy. Participants also shared their stories about the impact Covid-19 had on their ability to deliver LoC activities, and the creative ways they devised to keep the LoC activities happening in the communities. Some examples included sites holding one day offsite cultural events instead of camps and others rode bikes to offsite activities rather than travelling in the troopy. Many increased their classroom activities. All participants agreed that Covid-19 had a big impact on their ability to deliver their planned program and that they had to improvise or postpone many of their planned activities.

09.01.2022 It was an important day as Traditional Owners and guests gathered near Tennant Creek for the handback of Gagaguwaja Aboriginal Land Trust. The Anthony Lagoon Area Land Claim was lodged in 1983 under the Land Rights Act. "37 years to get this land back was way too long," said NLC member and cultural advisor Jack Green.... Among the guests today were Minister for Indigenous Australians, the Hon Ken Wyatt, Dr Sam McMahon, Warren Snowdon MP, Member for Barkly Steve Edgington, Barkly Regional Council Major Jeffrey McLaughlin, several members of the Barkly Regional Council and representatives of Australian Agricultural Company. NLC Chairman Samuel Bush-Blanasi said "this is a bitter day because the land won back is so small - six square kilometres of land - but on the other hand it's a sweet day because any day the NLC can help people get land back is a good day".

07.01.2022 Today, the United Nations celebrates World Fisheries day. The day highlights the critical importance to human lives, of water and the lives it sustains, both in and out of water. Our ranger groups play an important role in caring for the country they work on and the protection of our waterways is a key component of that.... Thank you to the tireless work they do in the research, monitoring and observation spaces working with stakeholders including CSIRO, Fisheries NT, Department of Agriculture and universities to ensure the preservation of marine life for future generations of our people.

07.01.2022 The NLC has been lucky enough to host two Year 10 students from Haileybury Rendall School for 3 days work experience. Jovian Dalywater(Bulman) and Sonny Wauchope(Croker Island) have spent time in a variety of different branches from Legal to Regional Development to the permit team. They also enjoyed a visit to the Caring for Country branch and the fleet workshop during their time with us. Work experience is just one of the many ways we can make a positive contribution to the... education and development of students within our region. The NLC is committed to getting out to more and more schools, discussing and providing the many opportunities we have within our organisation.

05.01.2022 37 YEARS IN THE MAKING A "bitter-sweet" ceremony took place near Tennant Creek today, with the Deeds of Title to the Gagaguwaja Aboriginal Land Trust being del...ivered to Traditional Owners. The land claim was lodged in 1983, meaning many of the Traditional Owners who started the work are no longer here to see the settlement. The small parcel of land, just six square kilometres, is located at the Anthony Lagoon pastoral lease area and has been handed back to Traditional Owners after negotiations with the Australian Agricultural Company. "It's very important because there is a sacred site in that waterhole. Everything is all there. When we go back we feel happy and the people that passed away, they get happy when we're back home," said the Northern Land Council's Jack Green.

02.01.2022 The Malak Malak ranger base came to life last Tuesday with the ranger group hosting the long awaited launch of the Malak Malak Healthy Country Plan. More than 50 Malak Malak and Matngele Traditional Owners from the Daly River region and beyond gathered with other interested parties to celebrate the completion of this valued community document. Many heart-warming speeches were delivered on the day, including a touching and emotional summary by Terry Mahney, the principle pla...nning consultant, on how the Malak Malak Healthy Country Plan keeps the caring for country aspirations of Traditional Owners alive. The Plan was driven by the Malak Malak Traditional Owners with the purpose of providing guidance to the next generation to ensure the land and culture remains healthy into the future. The Healthy Country Plan is dedicated to the memory of Albert Myoung, who sadly passed before the Plan’s development. Mr Myoung started the Malak Malak Ranger and Land Management program in 2000. He's quoted as saying: When I was a young fella this country was really good - just natural". The NLC Caring for Country branch and the TO’s would like to gratefully acknowledge the funding contribution from Fisheries NT.

02.01.2022 For over 50,000 years, Australia's Indigenous community cared for country by using land management that worked with the environment. Held annually, the Darwin Harbour Clean Up saw our Kenbi Rangers participate in the removal of rubbish from 15km of coastline and waters on the Cox Peninsula in collaboration with Larrakia Nation Aboriginal Corporation Rangers, Wagait Beach Council and other stakeholders. The clean-up aims to raise awareness about the effects of rubbish entering our waterways and will encourage everyone to ‘bin it or take it with you’.
