23.01.2022 Trinity Sunday, Yr B 30 May 2021 Homily This feast terrifies those giving the homily every time it comes around. How do you explain the Trinity? How does one understand the Trinity? It is one of the two features of our Faith that differentiate us from our fellow Abrahamic faiths, Judaism and Islam. We insist that not only did God take flesh and was fully and absolutely human, but that God is a Trinity. Not three gods, but simultaneously one and three.... This difficulty has led to some tortuous attempts to explain or rationalise the Trinity, but they all fell by the wayside. For me, an image that helps is perchoresis. It is a Greek word meaning dance, that God is always dynamic. You know when you watch two good dancers together, the dance is a part of it it is more than simply two individuals. God is simultaneously and always the Loved One, the Loving One and the Love. Our Gospel, taken from the close of Matthew’s Gospel, is the Great Mandate. All of us, in whatever we can, are called to bring the Good News to all around us. The very name we give our celebrations reflects this. Mass comes from the Latin, Ite, missa est! It is a command. We are sent away from the Eucharist to spread God’s word. How are we doing it? See more

19.01.2022 28th Sunday of Ordinary TimeYr A 11 October 2020 Homily The last few weeks we have been hearing the kingdom, the reign of God being referred to with the image of a vineyard. Today we hear a new image, that of a wedding feast. This is another common metaphor of allegory. A wedding feast conjures imagery of rejoicing. There is more though. In the Greco-Roman world most people lived on the verge of potential or actual hunger. Almost the only occasion when you could eat your fill... without worrying about it was at a wedding feast. Hence the image conjures up joy, being carefree, eating and drinking as much as you like. With the Gospel, we must be careful not to conflate described king with God. Jesus is not suggesting that God is as vengeful and capricious as this. Jesus is simply using the world as his community knew it. They knew very well how arbitrary those in power were. Jesus is not saying this behaviour is good or bad, he is just using what they can relate to. Remember he is always careful to tell us that the kingdom of heaven is like Like last Sunday’s Gospel, this can be used in a very anti-Semitic way, by equating the early guests to the people of Israel and the latter guests to the Christian community. Again, this would be a misreading of the passage. Jesus is referring to the leadership, not the community as a whole. Another troubling part of the passage, for me at least, is the treatment of the guest without a wedding garment. I always used to think this was quite unfair; when would he have had the time to get such a garment, even if they could afford it? Again, remember, the king is not God. The invitation is to all people. God invites all people to the banquet. We though, have to respond to the invitation appropriately. How do we respond to God’s call and invitation? See more

16.01.2022 Seventh Sunday of Easter/The Ascension of the Lord 16 May 2021 Homily The Gospel we hear today is an addition to the original text of Mark. That finishes with the women leaving the empty tomb. We are told that they said nothing to anyone, as they were afraid. Sometime in the First C, the community decided that Mark was a bit too sparse, so this part was added. It is still canonical because the community accepted it as authentically part of Mark’s Gospel. Like much of Mark it ...is sparse, an apparently simple narrative. Now, something to bear in mind with both accounts we hear today, Luke, from Acts and Mark, is they are not suggesting that Jesus rose to heaven like some kind of divine rocket! Luke, in particular, often links Jesus to the persecuted prophets of the Old Testament. Here, Luke is referencing Elijah’s ascension to heaven. Like Jesus, his mission was finished, and God to Elijah to join him. A point to take from these Readings is that our mission is not over. In both Acts and Mark we hear the commission to ourselves just as to the disciples to go out to all the world, in particular our own communities, to tell the Good News. It is the news that God loves all of us. It is a love that is not, can not be earned. It is unsolicited, it is unconditional, it can not be lost. How do we respond to this commission, to this love? 04.01.2022 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Yr A 04 Oct 2020 Homily Today’s Readings, especially the Gospel, are ones we need to approach carefully. It would be very easy to read them in an anti-semitic way, suggesting that the whole Jewish people are being condemned. This is most certainly not the case. Jesus is condemning the leadership, and them only. They are not concerned for the people as a whole, but only in retaining power for their own benefit. The Romans, particularly in the ear...ly empire rarely ruled directly. They preferred to work through local elites. The trouble for them in Judea though was that the people did not acknowledge the legitimacy of the leaders the Romans relied on. The reason for this loss of legitimacy was precisely what Jesus is referring to here. They are not even pretending to govern and care for all. This image of the vineyard as a metaphor for the people of Israel was a well established one. The leadership Jesus is speaking with would know exactly what he meant and would hate him for it. So, what is its relevance to us. One is, that like the leaders referred to here, we, in the First World particularly, possess many of the fruits of the earth and its environment. The question is, how do we deal with these fruits? Do we, by our words and actions endeavour to see these fruits justly distributed? Do we, by our words and actions care for the environment as a whole? Or, do we, by our words and actions, or more by our silence and inaction, care only for our own interests? See more

02.01.2022 Did you catch our online event ‘Circuit Breaker’ on Friday night? It came after news that South Australians were allowed to come out of the hard lockdown, but w...e still wanted to reiterate how important it is to look after yourself during tough times. This year has been an especially tough one for a lot of people and has pushed our resilience to higher levels. We want to remind you to be kind to yourself and don’t feel bad if you don’t get to reach all of the goals you had planned for the beginning of the year. Here are some ideas of what you can do to take a break and be kind to your mind and body! What are some of things you would add to the list? See more

01.01.2022 Solemnity of All Saints 01 Nov 2020 Homily This day reminds us that our community is much larger than those of us presently alive. The Communion of Saints means that the community is not bound by space or time. Our community of the Church includes all those who have gone before us and all those who will come after us. G.K Chesterton called it the democracy of the dead. One aspect of this is that we must be careful not to trapped in the Urgency of the Now. Issues perceived... as problems do not necessarily have to solved NOW. Any possible solution to a perceived issue will have its own consequences, often unforeseen. As one writer put it in response to another who was frustrated by the perceived slow response by Rome to an issue they felt was urgent, there is often a wisdom in waiting. If people are still talking about something 10 years or so later, then maybe, you do need to address it. The writer made the point though, that it was interesting how often an urgent issue went away in time! Our Gospel passage reminds us of how God calls us to live. We are to live in a way that is non-grasping, not demanding of others. If we can do that, we are Blessed or in a good place. We are also vulnerable. But we are vulnerable in the way that Jesus was vulnerable. Can we do that? Dare we do that? See more

01.01.2022 Our Sunday Mass broadcast on Channel 44 will air one last time on Sunday, November 8 at 5pm. As many of you would know, we began streaming daily Mass from the C...athedral and eventually moved to Sundays only, which have also been airing on Channel 44 each week. It has now come time to conclude our weekly partnership with Channel 44. We thank them sincerely for their support. We also want to acknowledge AV Plus who have, from the start, provided us with stellar videoing and streaming. The quality of the stream is because of their expertise and they will be missed! However, don’t fret! Sunday Mass will continue to be streamed on our YouTube Channel, with the assistance of a more permanent system in the Cathedral. We will also continue our relationship with C44 for major events throughout the year. Leave your vote of thanks to C44 and AV Plus below.
