22.01.2022 CHANGE OF VENUE Good thing weve learnt how to be flexible during the COVID-19 period. A quick change of venue but our North members are now set for their Bow & Blow this Thursday. #westernaustralian #communityfocused #orchestra #joondalup #musichistory #foundingmember
20.01.2022 To finish us off, our Maestro, Mrs Michaela Jones, director of Joondalup Primo. Michaela's musical journey began with her playing the piano and singing at the young age of 2. She started performing at prestigious venues such as the Octagon Theatre and Perth Concert Hall shortly after. At age 5, Michaela began playing the violin, which was the instrument that saw her gain a scholarship to one of Australia's best music schools at the time, Perth Modern, where she became Concer...t Master of the Senior Orchestra and met her husband (the percussionist). In 1996, during her primary school years, Michaela learnt sign language (AUSLAN) and was invited to "sing and sign" for Michael Jackson at the Rendezvous Hotel in Scarborough during his HIStory world tour. Several years later, Michaela graduated from Perth Modern and was awarded the Stabbs Scholarship for best string player, at which time she commenced teaching. After graduating from Perth Modern in the early 2000s, Michaela moved to Kinross where she soon realised that there were no Orchestras or opportunities for ensemble playing in the north-west corridor. The closest Orchestra was 55 minutes away - The Hills Symphony Orchestra in Guildford. Michaela was only 17 at this point and did not yet have her license, so she relied heavily on other orchestra members picking her up for Monday night rehearsals, and driving her to Guildford. Michaela soon became Concert Master of the Hills Symphony Orchestra, but sadly it wasn't long before her new position as Manager of a Music School, took priority. Throughout the last decade or so, Michaela has been a guest performer playing the electric violin for several rock and pop bands, at one stage, even travelling through New York with a well known WA band. She was the Manager of the Joondalup School of Music for 14 years, currently teaches violin and piano both at schools and privately, and is so grateful to be surrounded by music every day. Northern Lights Music is a life-long dream of hers, and she hopes to build a legacy that one day her two young daughters will take part in. #westernaustralian #community #orchestra #joondalup #rockingham #founder #director #music
20.01.2022 WE'RE MOVING! Well our North orchestras are. Secondo, our training orchestra up North has outgrown their tiny rehearsal room . This means both Primo and Secondo are moving, making it easy for families to be a part of NLM with the orchestras being in one place, at one time. See you at Emerald Park Clubrooms in Edgewater.
20.01.2022 May the fourth be with you...oh, whoops, wrong quote . You shall not pass!

11.01.2022 Heading down South, Ms Hannah Andrews, director of Rockingham. I'm going to skip the first part as you have already heard snippets of it from Mum. I was one of the six that moved to Perth. Violin was my first choice of instrument, though the rule in our house was you had to play an instrument that we already owned. There were LOTS of instruments, but no violin. So I started with the flute, taught by my mother, but you probably already guessed that. I received my first violin... not long after, again, taught by my mum for my first year until she couldn't keep up. Having been homeschooled, I was offered a position in a local school orchestra; where I started in the violin section to later jump ship to the non-existent double bass section. Six months later I was playing that double bass at the Perth Town Hall along with other school orchestras. I continued to add instruments and have been teaching for several years. Having just graduated with a double Bachelor, I hope to use my criminology background to further the current research into the effects music has on human behaviour. Yes, I'm an avid listener of true crime podcasts and have seen every crime doc on Netflix, bar one that I was told is a must-watch. And very much a science nerd. Why Northern Lights Music? For years, since moving down to Mandurah, I have seen the lack of musical involvement within the community. I've been teaching down this way for years, and there hasn't been anywhere for my students to further develop their music and develop connections with other musicians who share their passion #westernaustralian #community #orchestra #joondalup #warnbro #rockingham #founder #director

03.01.2022 First up is Mrs Jennylynne Andrews, director of Joondalup Secondo. I was born in Perth, grew up, married and had eight children in Canberra, and moved back to Perth with my hubby and six of our eight just over a decade ago. I learned flute through the public primary school program, adding a few other instruments in my teen years, and played in concert bands and school show bands through highschool and college. My children have all been homeschooled, I was their teacher, thoug...h some have attended school in their upper years. Music was a big part of our schooling. With a large family and a single income there wasnt much left for tuition, so I took that upon myself, using what I knew, learning what I didnt, and calling in help as I needed, until I could progress them no more myself, and it was time to find a real teacher. They are all now multi-instrumentalists, some teaching, some performing, some creating, some full-time, some part-time. They are all involved in music in some form. Im now all but retired from homeschooling, but keep myself involved through teaching general music in the homeschooling community, as well as private instrumental lessons. So why Northern Lights Music? I wanted there to be a place to fill a void. A place for those who dont have a school orchestra, a place for those who graduate Y12 having participated in a variety of ensembles and find themselves with nowhere to play, and place for those who may have had some years or even decades since they last participated in music in any form, where family members can make music together, those who like the sense of community, and those who just like passing on their knowledge and experience to the next generation of musicians. And a place where we can share the love of music with the community in which we live. I wanted something that was close to home. A place to belong. That place is Northern Lights Music #westernaustralian #community #orchestra #joondalup #rockingham #musichistory #founder #director
03.01.2022 Blown away. Blown away by... Northern Lights Music WA... Blown away by the response, the turn out, the support, the results. We had a full house, literally. What a fantastic launch night! We literally filled Rob Baddock Hall. Primo orchestra in their seats, Secondo and supporters filling the other half of the hall. We launched what looks like a very promising future for community orchestras in the North. After some introductions and formalities we broke into our separate orchestras, and began. Primo (under Michaelas baton) Blowed and Bowed through the Waltz of the Flowers, Time (from Inception), and Aeriths Theme (from game fame). The supporters showed their appreciation. Secondo filled the second room, and under Jennylynnes, worked our way through a variety of advanced techniques to play Ah! Poor Bird (in canon). Wow! They blew me away. They truly rose to the challenge. And it is a challenge. My heart is full. I hope yours is too.
