23.01.2022 Lets talk about the #1 killer of dogs: Obesity This photo represents what a fit/healthy dog should look like a healthy dog should have a waistline with ...a clear abdominal tuck just below their ribcage. If seeing a corgi like this makes you feel uneasy or uncomfortable, youre not alone. We, as a society, have normalized fat dogs. By using phrases like thicc, chonker, and big boned, weve altered our perception of reality. Fat is the new normal and healthy is the new unhealthy. We, as a society, have told ourselves that fat dogs are cute. But, let me ask you a question. Is that thicc dog still cute when they develop life altering heart problems, joint problems, or cancer? Yeah I went there. Is it a strange coincidence that 56% of dogs are overweight, and 50% of dogs get cancer? OR, is this proof that we are literally killing our dogs with their own food bowls? We owe it to our dogs to do better. We must do better. Heres how you can start changing perceptions: - Every time you feed your dog, assess their body condition - Measure your dogs food for every meal (dont eyeball it) - Exercise your dog EVERY day - Dont defend your dogs overweight-ness - Dont glorify other peoples overweight dogs - Dont use words like chonker, thicc, or big-boned to describe a dog Most importantly, DO NOT chastise your vet for mentioning your dogs weight. Matter of fact, you should be discussing your dogs body condition during every vet visit. If they dont bring it up, ask them about it. Its important to have an open mind during these conversations. Recognize that society has skewed your perception of healthy and actively work on being better for your dog. Your dogs health is quite literally in your hands. www.instagram.com/stumpsandrumps

22.01.2022 What on earth could be the problem with Bitty - the 4 year old working kelpie.. Bitty presented on deaths door. According to the owner she had been reasonably healthy 2 days prior. Bloods were run - showing severe electrolyte disturbances, dehydration & suspected kidney failure. Aggressive intravenous fluid therapy was initiated while we tried to figure out what was wrong with her. No history of baits, toxins etc on property. On abdominal palpation Liz thought she could fee...l a foreign body obstruction. Bitty was too sick to go to surgery that day - she would have died under anaesthetic, surgery was tentatively planned for the following day. The next day came and suspect obstruction could not be felt, bitty was much brighter and showing signs of wanting to eat. She had responded well to I/v fluids and gone from comatose and cramping to sitting up showing signs of wanting to eat. However some hours after eating a small amount of science diet A/D, she vomited - radiographs completed confirmed the suspicion of intestinal foreign body - the decision was to go to surgery. So now we are at 24hours post presentation, she still has severe changes to kidney function, very high urea, creatinine and phosphate, but her electrolyte and hydration had improved so surgery was scheduled. A peach seed was located in the intestines, non perforated but very close to it. Mystery solved. The reason for the severity of her initial signs will be intractable vomiting that the owner did not witness. Severe depletion of sodium, chloride and excessively high potassium leads to inability for muscles to function, and heart failure. Severe dehydration due to the vomiting and inability to keep water down leads to poor circulatory blood volume and kidney failure. Surgery completed and Bitty much improved but kidney parameters still worryingly high. Was she going to survive surgery only to be with euthanased due to kidney failure? 24hours post surgery and Bittys appetite was excellent and no vomiting. 3rd round of bloods showed continual improvement of all her kidney function parameters so she was discharged on science diet a/d (great product) 3 days later. At stitches out further bloods showed COMPLETE normalisation of everything!! Amazing recovery to say the least!!!!

22.01.2022 POSITIVE PARVOVIRUS CASE As if life wasnt hard enough, we & another local clinic have had dogs test positive for Parvovirus today While we dont ...want to cause a panic, it is extremely important that you check that your dogs vaccinations are absolutely CURRENT & we recommend being very careful with exercising & socialising your dogs in public for a while. NEW PUPPY OWNERS WITH NOT FULLY COMPLETED VACCINATION SCHEDULES SHOULD NOT BE MIXING WITH UNVACCINATED DOGS & AVOIDING DOG PARKS UNTIL VACCINATIONS ARE COMPLETED! Yet another fully preventable devastating condition See more

22.01.2022 What do you get when the kids hand raise a bull poddy calf but we no longer need said bull??? A now 4 year old bullock Liz & Kelsey teamed up with the lovely Pip Johnston (some of you may remember her has Pip Bacon! She used to work with us at the clinic over a decade ago!!) to castrate the 4 year old Charlie. Certainly a risky procedure in such a big bull, but with Pip leading the mission (because we cannot for the life of us work on our own animals ) we got it done. A ketamine stun and lots of local anaesthetic - Charlie now walks around with a couple less testicles, but nether the less he is happy and is eating out his days in the paddock

20.01.2022 Re-Introducing Earnie.. he is a bull Arab pup, some of you may remember he was hospitalised as a very young pup for treatment to save him from sever anaemia due to Hookworm, well hes back... he is approximately 6 months old now and a big strong pup. Earnie had a fall and avulsed his tibial crest. Essentially the forces of the muscle and the patella tendon rip the bone off at the weakest point of the insertion which is the growth plate. So he was back for surgery to pin and... wire the bone back in position. This is him in recovery, he has proven to be quite the attention seeker, and has captured the hearts (again) of all the staff . Full weight bearing and now running on the leg 4 weeks post repair BUT he has had the best fracture management team!!...he has had to stay here since surgery mid May as his owners are away...there are going to be a lot of tears when he goes home! Its nearly time for implant removal so we will update them. See more

08.01.2022 Coccidiosis is something we see reasonably frequently in puppies, enough to be advising to do faecal floats whenever there is a change in consistency of puppy poo. It’s mainly a problem of young animals housed in areas contaminated with the infective oocysts(similar to what would be a worm egg). Oocysts enter the environment in the faeces of an infected host ie. an clinically healthy older dog and under ideal conditions of oxygen, humidity and temperature they sporulatean...Continue reading

01.01.2022 Lucky Sir Hugo Having his semen collected and frozen at our facility! This is an awesome insurance policy to have on your pets/work dogs - you never know when a tragic accident will happen ie. snake bites, killed during cattlework or pigging etc It’s without doubt a castrated dog lives longer - sometimes ill health or prostate disease necessitates castration, so as a young dog it’s a great idea to preserve your male’s genetics for future use. ... Contact us if your wanting to get your male’s semen frozen or want more information!!
