05.01.2022 Today marks both the end of National Reconciliation Week and Mabo Day. Before National Reconciliation Week concludes, we would like to recognise and reflect on the resistance of Eddie ‘Koiki’ Mabo and his fight for the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the traditional owners of their land. After a ten year long legal battle on 3 June 1992, the High Court of Australia recognised that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have rights to the land.... This is more commonly known as the Mabo Decision and was a turning point for the recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights. For more information: https://nrw.reconciliation.org.au//Mabo-decision-nrw-2020. NT PHN are committed to reconciliation and understands the importance of learning about our nation’s shared history and culture to create a better future for all Australians. Our Stretch Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) has a focus on implementing longer-term strategies and covers the three themes of relationship, respect, and opportunities. For information on our targets, goals and how we will track our RAP progress: https://www.ntphn.org.au/reconciliation-action-plan
02.01.2022 Today is National Sorry Day, a day to reflect, mourn and remember the Stolen Generations who were forcibly removed from family and culture. We also acknowledge their resilience and strength, and the part we all play in reconciliation in healing to move forward as a nation. NT PHN staff Maddie and Renee attended the Northern Territory Stolen Generations Aboriginal Corporation’s Sorry Day morning tea at the Malak Community Centre to listen to stories and reflect. NT PHN proudl...y donated two $100 Woolworths vouchers which were drawn as door raffle prizes, as many of the members of the NT Stolen Generations Aboriginal Corporation are pensioners these vouchers were greatly appreciated by the two winners. Thank you to the NT Stolen Generations Aboriginal Corporation for allowing Maddie and Renee the opportunity to attend to learn, listen and reflect on an important part of our nation’s history.
