25.01.2022 FLASHBACK: October 2013 Ripe for the picking Ann Graham of Burroloo Well Hydroponics is enjoying a bumper season of tomatoes this year, and the 500 odd plants in her hydroponics growing tunnel are laden with ripening fruit, pungent with the aroma of summer.... According to Ann, the key to a good tasting tomato is vine ripening, and she picks her fruit when they are red - and says they are best eaten when bright red but still very firm. Her sentiments are echoed by Maggie Edmonds, from Maggie's Place in the Swan Valley, Many tomatoes sold these days are completely tasteless. Often, the varieties bred are just for ease of travel i.e. do not bruise easily and for long shelf life. Burroloo Well’s actually smell like tomatoes picked from your garden and they taste delicious. The reason for this is that the majority of supermarket tomatoes are picked green. They’re ripened by exposing them to ethylene gas, which imitates some of the changes that occur during ripening, like the development of the red colour, but because the sugars and flavour compounds are fed to the fruit from the vine itself, the taste is compromised. Ann and her family has been growing a winter crop of hydroponic tomatoes for 12 years now, starting off with three plastic-covered growing tunnels which maintain an ideal growing environment, keeping the temperature a balmy 25-30 degrees. 25.01.2022 Rain no match for riders on a mission Cyclists braved wet and windy conditions last week to raise awareness and thousands of dollars for Autism early intervention in the inaugural Ocean 2 Orchard. About 20 cyclists set off from Burns Beach making their way 50 km to the orchards of Lower Chittering on Sunday 20 September.... Event organiser and Golden Grove Citrus Orchard owner Adam Saunders said the Autism Association of Western Australia had been a cause close to his family’s heart since the diagnosis of their six-year-old son Jacob three years ago. 17.01.2022 N O V E M B E R C O V E R S T O R Y For Courtney Bayliss at Gingin Premium Meats, the path from paddock to plate is shorter than most. The supply chain from her family farm to the Gingin butcher shop she bought in partnership with her father, Shire of Gingin President Wayne Fewster, makes for beef with extremely low food miles and total traceability. However, as she explains, it was more of an intuitive decision than a marketing strategy. It’s not something we cons...ciously decided, to me it just makes sense. It’s a win for everyone. We get to sell a product that we know is premium because it’s sourced from our friends, neighbours and fellow local farming families who we trust one hundred percent. she says. 16.01.2022 Why did the accountants cross the road? Bindoon-based accountancy firm Northern Valleys Tax and Business Services will take a big step forward this month as it moves into a new, larger office space. After 3 years at the Binda Place location, owner Trish Murrell CPA said the timing was right to move and snapped up the chance to head across the road to the Bindoon Stone Cottage. The move coincides with the appointment of chartered accountant Claire Messenger who joined us i...n late September. Claire graduated from Edith Cowan University over three years ago and comes to us with solid experience from large accounting firms in Perth, said Trish. I’m looking forward to seeing what she brings to the business and how we can grow and expand with an additional accountant on board full-time. 15.01.2022 Conservation, connection and collaboration were at the forefront of a special school holiday workshop run at Bullsbrook College in October. The purpose of the workshop was to create artwork to be used at the City of Swan's Bullsbrook Recycling Centre, in conjunction with a revegetation project with Bullsbrook Landcare. The area to be revegetated lies adjacent to the recycling centre and among the degraded farming land and abundant weeds is the potential for a thriving wetla...nd and educational space. Bullsbrook Landcare’s Anne Janes is pleased to be able to bring multiple organisations together to work on the project. Revegetation is what our group and Chittering Landcare Centre are really experienced at doing and this is the perfect spot to showcase how to revegetate an area. You can never bring the land back to what it was, but you can give it some environmental value. The weeds are daunting, but it has great potential and I would love to see schools use it in the future, said Anne. 14.01.2022 Satellite surveillance catches illegal clearing of native vegetation Almost nine hectares of native land illegally cleared. Habitat of Carnaby's black cockatoo impacted by clearance A Bullsbrook market gardener has been fined $18,000 with costs of $618 after satellite imagery showed he had illegally cleared approximately 8.8 hectares of native vegetation.... At Midland Magistrates Court, Quoc Tran, 40, pleaded guilty to clearing the land at Old West Road in 2017 without authorisation under the Environmental Protection Act 1986, following an investigation by the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER). The unauthorised clearing was detected using satellite imagery obtained from the European Space Agency's Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission, which DWER uses for a range of monitoring purposes. The DWER investigation showed banksia trees and other native species had been cleared and pushed into piles following a fire. Banksia woodlands on the Swan Coastal Plain are recognised as a threatened ecological community under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. While once this ecological community was almost continuous across much of its distribution, today it is highly fragmented. An application for a clearing permit had been made to the then Department of Environment and Conservation but was refused as the banksia woodland contained foraging habitat for the endangered Carnaby's black cockatoo. In court, Magistrate Kevin Tavener found Mr Tran had cleared the land for commercial purposes and said a substantial fine was necessary due to impact on the cockatoo habitat. DWER also issued Mr Tran with a vegetation conservation notice, requiring the land holder to re-establish and maintain native vegetation within the cleared area. Comments attributed to Environment Minister Stephen Dawson: "Adhering to decisions on clearing permit applications is vital to ensure that inappropriate clearing of native vegetation does not take place. "Clearing native vegetation after an application was refused is a serious matter as it undermines the integrity of Western Australia's environmental laws. "These laws have been carefully designed to manage the impacts on biodiversity, land conservation values and water resources from clearing of native vegetation. "I congratulate the team at DWER for another successful prosecution and their ongoing work on illegal clearing."

12.01.2022 ALL THE PRETTY HORSES There are few toys that offer the splendour, old-world charm and timeless delight of a rocking horse. For Pete Jensen, bringing these artisanal pieces to a modern market is a process of craftsmanship, creativity and love in which he flourishes. Pete made his first rocking horses on his Bullsbrook property in 2009 for his young daughters.... I bought a set of plans and the materials from a guy in NSW and gave it a go, said Pete. They were a bit rough at that stage, not like they are now, he laughs. Rough or not, those who saw his horses were impressed and word-of-mouth orders began to trickle in. Pete set about sourcing the materials, which include real horse hair manes and tails from Mongolia and renewable, furniture-grade pine from New Zealand. 05.01.2022 Good luck to Holly, representing Moora Race Club at the WA Country Cups Fashions on the Field final! The countdown is on to the prestigious WA Country Cups Fashions on the Field final. The final will be held at Ascot Racecourse on November 28, as part of the Crown Perth Winterbottom Stakes Day. Fashionista Holly Kiely will represent Moora Race Club at the final at Ascot Racecourse I am honoured to represent Moora Race club at such a prestigious event. I loved traveling t...o Moora racecourse and meeting such lovely people at the track. I grew up in Kalgoorlie, so it was lovely to venture back out to the country for a country race meet. Any female winner of a Fashions on the Field competition held at a WA thoroughbred race club, and each virtual Fashions Off the Field heat winner, was able to nominate themselves for the 2020 WA Fashions on the Field final. Ms Kiely is now one of 12 lucky ladies in the running to win the ultimate racing prize, including a trip for two to London to attend the 2021 Royal Ascot meeting, $10,000, and a $5000 Linneys voucher. I am an Underground Mining Engineer with a passion for Fashion. Constructing outfits for fashions on the field is my passion and a great creative outlet when I am not on a rural mine site. I bought this fabric whilst I was working in Africa last year with the intention of making an outfit for the Dubai world cup. Whilst Dubai wasn’t an option this year, I am just as excited to be representing Moora at such an exclusive event. RWWA general manager racing Charlotte Mills said "It was a strong field of finalists this year, with each entrant curating a beautiful ensemble which embodies the essence of race day fashion - style, creativity and attention to detail,"

05.01.2022 Our guide to what’s on, what to do and who to see!

05.01.2022 FLASHBACK: MAY 2012 Cover Story: A hard nut to crack Jackie Shervington... Brenda and Bill Denham have a Macadamia farm of 800 trees in Chittering. They planted all the trees themselves, the first 200 were planted about 18 years ago and will reach full production at 20 years old. Brenda recalls how they arrived at Chittering all those years ago. Bill’s father had always said, When you can afford to buy a little bit of land, buy it, because if we have another recession you can live a little bit off the land. These words had stuck in Bill’s mind so we thought we’d try Macadamias as a retirement thing." Given the right conditions, fully matured Macadamia trees can yield around 20-30 kilos of nuts per tree, which earns around $2.50/kilo. Sounds pretty easy in theory, but the Denham’s are not there yet. Brenda says, As yet it is not going to be a retirement option. The drought hasn’t been very helpful. The last few years we haven’t had many nuts, only 100 or 200 kilos. The more water, the more fruit sets. And you need the bees, with drought there is less bees. Brenda is very optimistic with this year’s season. Thanks to good rainfall, the trees are full of nuts so we should harvest a lot more over the coming months from now until August," she said. 03.01.2022 Which Buddy are you? There's still time to be a part of our 2020 local gift guide (and judging by how busy the shops are already I would definitely encourage everyone to stick close to home as we rocket towards December!) 49 days till Christmas!

02.01.2022 We all know just how hard 2020 has been. Here in WA, our State is in the best possible position as we continue our strong recovery from COVID-19. But times are... still tough for many Western Australians, and there is always more work to do. At the start of the pandemic, to give everyone certainty, we rolled out a freeze on all household fees and charges. Today, as a result of our strong budget management over the last three years, we can now go one step further. Every household in Western Australia will receive a historic, one-off $600 Household Electricity Credit. The WA Household Electricity Credit will be automatically applied to every Synergy or Horizon Power residential account as of today. You will see it on your own bill in November and December. It'll mean WA families have a bit of extra money available in the lead up to Christmas. The $600 credit is fully funded through the recent Bell Group settlement, for the losses incurred in the Bell Group collapse in the early 1990s. It made sense that these funds go straight back to Western Australians. Especially in times like these, when people may need that bit of extra financial relief because of COVID-19. But I have a request: If this credit means you can spend some extra money, use it to support our local WA businesses. By spending local, you'll be helping to support WA jobs, support your fellow West Aussies, and keep WA safe and strong.

01.01.2022 HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY
