24.01.2022 Meet beautiful Coca, a 3-year-old Samoyed. Coca’s hooman found her chewing on a small bottle of hand sanitiser. Coca’s new toy was taken off her and placed it i...n the bin for safety. But 40 minutes later Coca started acting strange. Suspecting she may have ingested some of the contents of the bottle, Coca was rushed to us along with the evidence (the chewed bottle). Upon examination it was found that Coca had ingested enough of the hand sanitiser to show the effects of alcohol poisoning. Most hand sanitiser often contains ethanol (alcohol). Like other types of alcohol, hand sanitiser can be toxic to our pets, with symptoms increasing in severity depending on the amount ingested. After IV fluids to help metabolise and clear the alcohol from her system overnight, Coca went home feeling much better and happier. With hand sanitiser now being a staple everywhere, it’s good to know it can be toxic to our pets if ingested in large amounts. Why not give us a call to book in for most routine things like itchy skin and ears, sore eyes, dental checks, general health checks, arthritis checks, senior health checks, behaviour consults, vaccinations etc. Allthough we are focussing on the North Eastern Valley region we are keen to see most furry animals north of the river and will travel for those patients who are really worried about the vet in general! Give us a call on 0450847226 or email [email protected] to book a home visit today!

21.01.2022 On 2nd June 2020 Dr Nichola will begin providing consultations for your pet in the safety of their home. We will be seeing cats and dogs initially, and this should expand to other small animals as time goes on. Whilst she will be based primarily north of the river, Dr Nichola will be keen to see any patients in the metropolitan area, especially pets who struggle with fear and anxiety at the vet clinic. Dr Nichola has a real interest for helping worried patients and enabling them to get the right veterinary care when they otherwise wouldn’t. Please call us on 0450847226 or email [email protected] to book an appointment. We cannot wait to start seeing your furkids in their own home

09.01.2022 Did you know the rate of suicide in the veterinary industry (that’s everyone not just the vets!) is 4x the national average. This post highlights some really important, valid and serious points. Be kind to your vet, they are only trying to help you and your fur kids and have spent their life studying to get there. Sadly, so many great vets leave the industry to find other careers or worse.

09.01.2022 BREAKING NEWS Veterinarians at the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center in the USA think they have worked out the reason why grapes are toxic to dogs. After rece...iving reports of vomiting and kidney injury following exposure to cream of tartar, veterinarians put two and two together and worked out that tartaric acid and potassium bitartrate, compounds present in cream of tartar, are also present in grapes. This may finally answer the long standing question as to why dogs develop kidney injury following ingestion of grapes. It also answers the question as to why some dogs are affected and others are not. This conundrum lies in the variability in tartaric acid concentration in grapes with concentrations changing based on grape type, locality and ripeness. Whilst 20g of grapes per kg (approximately 5 grapes per kg) has been reported to cause kidney damage, there is a report of a dog eating 1/2 grape per kg developing kidney injury also. So the best advice out there is still to avoid feeding your dog grapes and sultanas!
