Many freshwater fishos have been expressing their excitement via social media to catch their first cod of the season. Once cod season kicks off, we expect to see fishers quests to reel in a prized metre-plus cod. When targeting our beloved cod it is incredibly important to ensure you are taking care of your catch to ensure the sustainability of this magnificent and unique fishery for future generations. 12.01.2022 I’ve just had THE most amazing experience in over 40 years throwing lures for the mighty Murray cod. I had just pushed through some thick blackberries and slid... down a sandy mound to get to the rivers edge. I launched a short cast about 1/3 of the way across the pool to maximise the time my lure would be dredging the bottom around structure. To my right was a thick bed of strap weed that jutted right up to where the steep sandy beach fell into the water. We had seen a heap of big carp, in full spawning mode through the morning, and as I continue my retrieve, I polarioded what I thought was a huge dark coloured carp foraging in the weed. That was until she turned and I saw the white trimmings across its tail and dorsal fin - COD !! As a result I experienced that Immediate acceleration of my heart rate (any cod angler knows this feeling). Still on that first retrieve, I sped up my retrieve to a velocity not dissimilar to that required when chasing frigates or stripey’s from the stones. I was desperate to lob a lure towards the big green girl before she disappeared into the abyss. As my lure reached a deep channel between two oversized boulders, no more than five metres in front of me, my lure got slammed. Simultaneously, (and as I was looking to my right) the big cod in the weed had kicked up a huge cloud of black mud and was no where to be seen. Literally seconds after I hooked up I felt another almighty thud on my line and had a ridiculously heavy, almost dead weight on my line. I slowly lifted my rod to see the most unbelievable sight. The big cod in the weed had powered over and half devoured the fish on my line. The smaller cod (around 60cm) was still alive in the bigger fish’s mouth (check the video and you can see its tail and fins moving). As we attempt to lip the larger fish, she went nuts and shredded 8 to 10 metres of line in a flash.
