25.01.2022 Volunteers make the world go round! Here are some of the lovely crew getting in yellow pear tommies. Hooray! We also mulched the corn, preped the weed matting, made a mushroom grow bed in the greenhouse (experimental, opportunistic and very exciting, more on this later ), plus we enjoyed the mandatory cuppa ! Sometimes as adults it can be hard to make friends or find meaningful things to spend time on. At the Farm everyone is welcome, respect is paramount and it seems to... be a place that cultivates friendships. And what is more fundamental and crucial a task is there than growing food to nourish and sustain life!? Join us if you fancy. 18.01.2022 How do you like our super cute cuecumber trellis? Spring and summer is all about stakes, trellises, wire, string and ties to support the fat, juicy fruiting veggies - think tomatoes, cuecumbers, beans, even eggfruit. Sometimes the Farm seems like a star picket black hole, seriously, they are always on the shopping list! (If anyone needs to get rid of any we will take em! ). Last year our cuecumber crop was pretty epic but we grew just a single row per bed with one string dropping down for each plant. This system lets us get in twice as many plants. We will just have to see how tall they get . 08.01.2022 It's hot today in Perth. In fact we've had a few hot spells offer 35c. We haven't been under 30c for about 10 days. Its hard to garden in heat like that but even harder for veggies to thrive. And it's not just lack of water- if all you do is water more you just end up with steamed veggies Shade, windbreaks and healthy soil are a big part of it. So we ve been spending a lot of time feeding our plants, spreading compost, mulching and covering beds with row covers. 02.01.2022 We are so excited to get our native garden project underway! This is the amazingly talented Michelle from @apacewa who will be designing the space. We had a super productive catch up at the Farm and Michelle gave us a sneak peek at some of her initial sketches. The space will include bush tucker plants, shady people places, will screen some daggy bits of the farm, attract insects and will double as an outdoor classroom! It's going to be beautiful! 02.01.2022 There have been plenty of challenges this summer - caterpillars in the eggplants, beans not germinating and cuecumbers refusing to fruit... but there is so much promise and potential in our little farm. The asparagus is going from strength to strength. We planted these as teeny, feeble newborn babies in Spring and now look at them! They are not big enough to harvest yet, that is still at least a year away. I've been talking about it for over a year now and we finally have the tray of tiny baby seedlings and the patch of bare ground that needs prepping! Over the next couple of weeks we will really be pushing to get them all in (busy bee date set for 26 Sept, but will take us more than one session) plus get all the summer veggies in. We already have a couple of beds of tommies, basil, corn, zuchs... in.... but we still have more to do! So this is a little call out to members and non-members alike, if you've ever been interested in volunteering at the Farm, now is the time!! Thanks to our small but dedicated crew who skillfully converted these degassed fridges (from @cityofcockburn Henderson Tip, thanks!) into working worm farms. And thanks to Sophie for the delish morning tea (again!). Once our little worms have settled in we will use the worm castings (worm poo) each time we plant a seedling. 01.01.2022 It's not the sexiest veggie we've grown, but actually we're pretty proud of it. Celery is hungry and thirsty and this crop has been given all it needs. It's not huge and watery like shop celery, and to be honest it's a little stringy, but the flavour is so fantastically strong. It's like you've been punched in the nose with a stick of celery.
