24.01.2022 Being a vet is not always easy. In fact its often really tough. So much so that many of our best and brightest dont stick with it. Our profession is filled with sensitive people that love animals and want to make a difference; but from time to time they really need respect, understanding and support; both from their colleagues and the general public. This is why Dr Nadine Hamilton, who spent over six years researching veterinarian wellbeing at doctoral level, founded the organisation called Love Your Pet Love Your Vet. You can read about it here.: https://www.loveyourpetloveyourvet.com.au/aboutus

22.01.2022 Happy World Animal Day Just like our Father's Day or Mother's Day, animals have their own day too! Today is a very important day to us as it's a day dedicated to our companion animals. Today we celebrate our animals’ rights and welfares. The mission of World Animal Day is to raise the status of animals, so we are able to improve welfare standards all around the globe. By mobilising it into a global force, we can make the world a better place for all animals. ... This celebration started almost 100 years ago and has continued to grow into a powerful day ever since. In the world there are nearly 9 million animal species! With Australia having more than 378 mammal species, 828 bird species, 4000 fish species, 300 lizard species, 2 crocodile species and 50 types of marine mammals. That's a lot of animals!! So, this one goes out to all the weird, wonderful and spectacular animals out there! Some ways you can contribute to this special day is to volunteer at shelters, donate to animal organisations around the world, or even just treat your own animal to a day at the beach, a special treat or even an extra cuddle. Enjoy the day, and remember to consciously think about how you can positively impact animal welfare on the day.
22.01.2022 Veterinary Services have just been classified as Essential services by the Federal Government - we are open as usual at this stage; but are observing social distancing measures including limiting the number of people and animals in the building at once. Call us for details if you need us on 3266 9992.
20.01.2022 Happy International Womens Day to all the animal loving women who work hard to promote animal welfare. Thank you Leanne Linard MP for your lovely profile of our Dr Megan for IWD!
20.01.2022 Vets are regarded as an essential service in Australia during the COVID19 restrictions and while we suggest you dont come in for a social chat or something very minor right now, we do want to assure you that we have very strict protocols in place to protect both you and us, when an essential medical appointment for your pet is required. This includes a pets annual health check but we also stress not to hesitate to call us if you are worried about your pet for any reason. Just like Marleys owner did when he started to get sick. Emergency surgery yesterday evening to remove a macadamia nut which was swallowed accidentally and stuck in his intestines was performed just in time. Marley is recovering well today and already impatient to get back home....after his dad checks the yard for any further macadamias that might be lurking
20.01.2022 On Monday we welcome our new vet Dr Madeleine Clelland. We know she is going to become a big part of the Northgate Vets family! An animal lover since childhood, Maddy graduated from veterinary science at James Cook University in 2014. After graduating, she worked in a busy small animal hospital in Toowoomba for 4 years. She then moved back home to Brisbane, where she has had a unique 2 years experience working as a housecall vet. She enjoys all areas of veterinary science but has a keen interest in small animal medicine and ophthalmology. When shes not at work, Maddy enjoys spending time with friends and family, wining and dining, travelling and playing with her sassy cat Gertie.
20.01.2022 Patient of the Week Introducing Baxter, a 14 week old Miniature Pinscher. Baxter paid us a visit this week for nail trim! Nail care is very important as nails can quickly become ingrown, which can dig into their paw pads causing them pain. Their nails can also be simply too long making walking uncomfortable and increase the risk for hooking and tearing of the nails. To avoid this, you can give us a call to book a nail trim with one of the lovely nurses/techs on 3266 9992.... From now on, we will be posting a Patient of the Week! So, keep an eye out to see if your loved one makes an appearance on our Facebook page.
19.01.2022 One of the better things of Covid are the puppies!! Here is beautiful 10 week old Penny after her first health check with Dr Megan.

19.01.2022 As the bushfire crisis continues in many parts of our country our thoughts are with the huge numbers of animals deeply affected by the catastrophic conditions. This dog evacuated by the navy from Mallacoota today gives a little insight into the trauma, injury and displacement experienced by pets, wildlife and livestock. Veterinarians from all around the country are volunteering to help out. We have been asked by concerned people what they can do to offer support to the vets volunteering to assist animals in the bushfire crisis. You may like to consider making a donation to Vets Beyond Borders who are coordinating the veterinary response to the crisis here: https:/www.vetsbeyondborders.org. 15.01.2022 Baby Birds Do you know what to do if you find a baby bird? Here are a few helpful tips that can assist you if you ever do find one. Baby birds are often found on the ground during their initial days after leaving their nest. Often caring by-standers think that these babies are injured or require assistance, and therefore come to the rescue and bring them to a Vet. However, these babies are still learning how to fly and it is actually best to leave them alone to allow the...m to be reunited with their family. If the baby bird is obviously sick or injured, then human help may be required. Here are some questions to ask yourself to determine if the baby requires veterinary attention: 1. Does the baby bird have feathers? If they do not, they are unable to keep themselves warm and then require human help. 2. Is the baby bird calling or making noise? 3. Is the baby bird bright and responsive? 4. Can the baby bird perch on your finger? 5. Can the baby bird spread its wings evenly when encouraged? 6. Is the baby bird in a safe area (i.e. under a tree and not on a busy road) If you can answer YES to the last 5 questions, then the baby bird should be left alone to reunite with its family. If you answered NO to any of these questions, the baby bird requires Veterinary attention. Bush Turkey’s however are never lost or orphaned as they stop receiving parental care after hatching. These babies need to be left alone to disperse by themselves. The only exception is if they are clearly sick or injured. Please remember to only handle baby birds if they appear sick or injured. Where can you get help if you find a sick or injured bird? Give us a call on 3266 9992 or bring the sick or injured baby bird into the clinic for our staff to care for them.

13.01.2022 Our beautiful new nurse Agnelia has been in love with animals since she was able to walk. Growing up, she spent a lot of time horse riding in the archipelago of Stockholm, where she is from. In high school she studied natural sciences, including animal biology, ethology and animal management. It was a natural step to pursue a career within animal sciences and she graduated TAFE with a Veterinary Nursing Certificate IV in 2017. She started off her career in Toronto and spent over a year there, developing her skills as a Veterinary Nurse. In her spare times she enjoys being outdoors and keeping fit, going for long walks or runs, playing tennis or doing yoga. She is dedicated to expanding her knowledge and skills and is very excited to be part of the Northgate Veterinary Surgery Team!

11.01.2022 International Veterinary Technician Week This week we celebrate International Veterinary Technician Week. This week is dedicated to show recognition and appreciation towards our Vet Techs in the profession. Recently, we have had three Vet Techs join the team, who you shall meet throughout the week. What is a 'Vet Tech' you ask? A Vet Tech attends university for three years where they then receive a Bachelors degree once they graduate. A Vet Tech will assist Veterinarians... in the care of animals. They may clean and wrap wounds, check vital statistics, collect samples, monitor anaesthetics and administer medications. Many people aren't sure what the difference between a Vet Nurse and a Vet Tech is. The difference between a Vet Nurse and a Vet Tech is that Vet Nursing requires you to complete a Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing whereas Vet Techs receive a University Bachelor of Veterinary Technology. However, both professions share a common goal; providing the best care for your pets. So to all the Vet Techs out there, we thank you every day for all you do for our animals. Happy International Veterinary Technician Week!!

09.01.2022 Its not only us humans that are having to get use to our relative home detention. So are our pets. While Dr Bernie and Dr Megan are job-sharing at Northgate Vets, their cats, Christopher, and Benedict Cumberbatch, are a little annoyed that their 8am-7pm nap is being regularly disrupted, the upside however is the relaxed down-time after an early dinner. So its definitely a case of ups and downs. Stay safe everyone and be assured that we are an essential service here for your pets medical appointments if necessary
09.01.2022 Be like Sandra!
