07.01.2022 " CRIME UPDATE FROM YOUR LOCAL POLICE" Geelong Police have seen a recent rise in aggravated burglary offences being committed across the Division. We know that ...many members of the community are concerned and we understand why. Your home is a place where you should feel safe. While we acknowledge these crimes have increased and, although still relatively small in number, we have committed to endeavouring to reduce these crimes. Our intelligence tells us that the majority of burglaries are non-violent that is, someone might be home when the burglary occurs but there is no confrontation. Virtually all instances reported recently where there has been confrontation within the home have been as a result of the parties (offenders/victims) being known to each other. That aside, we are absolutely focused on addressing these crimes. We do not accept that any person should have another person enter their home with the purpose of committing crime. The safety of the community is always our number one priority and we want to assure you that we will get on top of this problem. We have intelligence analysts continually forming a picture of the offending, why it is happening and where it is happening so that we are able to prevent them occurring and arrest those responsible. In local areas police are undertaking proactive patrols using both uniform members in marked police vehicles and plain clothes members in unmarked police vehicles. Currently tactical operations are also underway to address this issue. We are deliberately cracking down on people wanted on warrants, ensuring offenders are complying with their strict bail conditions, and managing our persons of interest. Crime prevention and detection is a multi-pronged approach and responsibility, Outside of policing the problem, we are engaging with the community and stakeholders on what we can do to stop these offences occurring in the first place. We all have a role to play. Having said this we have seen that our offenders are regularly entering residential premises while the occupants are home through unlocked doors and windows. Offenders are also entering through open garage doors and then into homes through unlocked internal doors. Our message is and has been very clear for some time now Crime Prevention is the responsibility of us all - Police, residents and the broader community, Your safety and the safety of your family is the number one priority and by us all working together we can achieve this. Let us explain ( and this should not be considered 'victim blaming'): You need to make your house and your vehicles as difficult as possible to break in to. You’ll find if it is too hard, a lot of offenders will just run off. 50% of thefts from vehicles in the Geelong area result from valuables being left in view in unlocked vehicles. This lack of security leaves people to become victims of opportunistic crime unnecessarily. We are constantly frustrated as police to find that offenders are entering homes through unlocked doors and windows with the sole purpose of stealing the keys to a vehicle parked in the driveway or street. 70% of modern cars statistically are being stolen with their own car keys. We are also frustratingly taking reports of vehicles being stolen where the keys have been left in the vehicle or in the garage where the vehicle has been housed. Sadly, our communities are not as they once were, where we could leave things unlocked and not fall victim to crime, as we have a cohort of people who are intent on committing crime for their own benefit. Keys to vehicles should not be left in common places within the home such as kitchen benches, dining tables and hall stands but placed into a draw or somewhere similar which is less obvious. Remote controls for garages and spare keys should not be left in vehicles. We need to have our community become savvy with locking doors, windows and vehicles as a part of their daily routines. The community can also play a big part in all of this. The reporting of suspicious behaviour is an important tool in the defence of a community. If you see somebody who is acting suspiciously in an area you should report this to Triple Zero 000 immediately. It doesn’t matter if you are wrong, if police attend and check this person out and they are there for a lawful purpose then so be it but if they are there to commit crime then that crime has been prevented. We are finding instances where social media pages are being utilised by some people in our community to post discussion of such criminal this activity where we need them in the first instance to be dialling Triple Zero 000. We are also finding that CCTV footage that we are not even being made aware of is being posted to social media. This footage would greatly assist the investigators if they are aware of it and could hamper the investigation greatly by being released through social media channels. As part of a police focus on crime and road policing in Geelong leading up to and over the Queen’s Birthday Long weekend, police have made some significant arrests including; An 18 year old male from Moolap for burglary in St.Albans Park; A 28 year old male from Anakie for armed robbery in Bell Post Hill; A 27 year old male from Geelong West for burglary in Norlane; A 26 year old male from Bell Post Hill for multiple offences including burglary, theft and firearms offences in various suburbs; A 30 year old male from Whittington for burglary and theft in Newtown; A 24 year old male from Norlane for burglary in Colac; A 19 year old male (no fixed address) for multiple aggravated burglaries in Queenscliff and Belmont; An 18 year old male from Newtown for attempted burglary and attempted theft of motor vehicle in East Geelong; A 15 year old male from St.Albans for aggravated burglary in Drumcondra.
