24.01.2022 Smoosh is a Senior! Senior cats are at risk of some common diseases that can change a lot over their lifetime. Smooshs family want to ensure that we keep close watch on these things as she gets older so we can take every step to keep her as healthy as possible! She visited us for her Senior Health Check, blood tests to assess her kidney and thyroid function, and to have her blood pressure measured. These are important screening tools for assessing the early stages of diseases that might not be obvious from the outside. 24.01.2022 Dental x-ray is a really important part of an oral assessment in dogs and cats. Dental x-rays help us determine if there are abnormalities beneath the gumline that we can’t easily detect from the outside. This is a great example of how appearances can be deceiving, with a tooth looking pretty healthy from the outside but showing significant disease of the roots on x-ray. This is a Resorptive Lesion, commonly found in cats but can be found in dogs too. Abnormal cell activity e...ats away at parts of the tooth and exposes the nerves, creating a lot of pain. The crown of the tooth may look totally normal, with all the disease under the gumline. These painful teeth can cause our pets to stop eating, chew preferentially on one side, or salivate excessively, and need to be extracted for them to make a good recovery. You can read more about dental disease and Resorptive Lesions via our website Resources northmacleanfamilyvet.com.au/dental-health #OralResorptiveLesion #PetDentist #PetDentistry #DentalHealth #PetDentalHealth #DentalXray #LooksCanBeDeceiving #BeneathTheSurface #ThinkAgain #VetVisit #NorthMacleanFamilyVet
24.01.2022 Doesn’t he look handsome! Leo is a young and excitable Great Dane, whose mum has been struggling with lead walking him. He is big and strong, and he pulls with all his weight on the lead. We fitted him with a Halti, and he took to it really well for his first time! With some positive reinforcement (lots of treats!!) he’ll soon be out and about walking safely and happily with his family! Do you struggle with your dog pulling when on the lead? There are different solutions for ...different dogs. Collars put a lot of pressure on the delicate structures of the neck. Harnesses can be great for small dogs, but gives medium and large dogs the chance to push and pull you with the whole weight of their body! A Halti is a safe and effective solution! The Halti fits comfortably over the muzzle without restricting the dogs ability to pant, drink or eat. It allows you to steer their head and more easily direct their body safely and comfortably. Come in and ask us more about the Halti! We can help fit your four legged friend and get you both out walking together again! #halti #NoMorePulling #LeadTraining #BehaviourTraining #EasierWalking #PetSafety #NorthMacleanFamilyVet

23.01.2022 Pippa is going to be a mum! She visited us recently for an ultrasound to confirm her pregnancy. We can use ultrasound to visualise the puppies from 5 weeks gestation. It can get a bit crowded in there if the litter is large, so determining how many puppies there are via ultrasound can be challenging. At this stage of her pregnancy, we aim to confirm she is pregnant, and then we recommend an x-ray at the end of gestation (8-9 weeks) to provide an estimation of litter size by counting the skeletons we can see. Stay tuned for her pre-whelping x-rays in the next few weeks! #PregnancyDiagnosis #Ultrasound #PreWhelping #MumToBe #AllThePuppies #AiredaleTerrier #PregnancyUltrasound #NorthMacleanFamilyVet
23.01.2022 Hi there! I am a handsome young adult guy that has been living with the wonderful team at North Maclean Family Vet recently. When I arrived I didn’t have a microchip, so no one knows my name, but the ladies here have affectionately called me Spooky! The team here hoped that someone would call to claim me, but it seems that I will need to find a new home. I was very shy and scared when I arrived, but now that I’ve settled in I’m VERY smoochy! I haven’t really had the chance ye...t to meet any dogs or other cats, so I might need some time to adjust, but I am very happy to be around humans! I will be vaccinated, FIV tested, desexed, microchipped, and I will bring a bag of food and a complete parasite treatment with me too. An adoption fee will apply, you can enquire about me at North Maclean Family Vet. #AdoptDontShop #FureverHomeWanted #BlackCats #SpookyCat #AdoptAPet #NorthMacleanFamilyVet

18.01.2022 This handsome fella might not look it, but he is 13 years old! He visited us for his Senior Wellness Check as his family are concerned about the risks of kidney disease as he gets older. 18.01.2022 Did you know that plaque isnt visible to the naked eye? We need to use certain dyes or lights to be able to see it! Sometimes teeth that look clean can have a layer of plaque which adheres bacteria to the tooth and along the gum line. Ask us about how we can help you manage plaque in your pets mouth, and help prevent dental disease from pro...gressing! There are lots of different methods, and we can help you find one that suits you and your furry friend! Dont forget that August is Dental Month, and we only have a little left of the month! 16.01.2022 Did you know that dogs and cats have baby teeth that are supposed to fall out, just like us? Sometimes not all of the baby teeth (known as deciduous teeth) fall out on their own, and are retained into adulthood inappropriately. This can cause problems with the adult teeth if they cant grow into normal position because the baby teeth are in the way. They can develop malocclusions (the teeth and jaws dont fit together properly), damage the hard palate, and can cause plaque an...d calculus to develop faster between the overcrowded teeth. This little fella had retained almost all of his front baby teeth, and his adult teeth werent growing into their normal positions. He underwent an anaesthetic to have all the retained baby teeth removed, and we will be monitoring the development of his adult teeth now they have some more room! #DentalMonth #DentalAwareness #DentalXray #PuppyTeeth #RetainedDeciduousTeeth #ToothExtraction #ItsNotAShark #TooManyTeeth #dogs #puppies #cats #kittens #NorthMacleanFamilyVet See more

14.01.2022 Look how miss Mylee has improved! We first met Mylee in January as her family was worried about the condition of her hair coat and her body had changed shape. She had developed a distended abdomen, had become quite lethargic, and was almost completely bald! After some investigation, Mylee was diagnosed with Cushings Disease. Her adrenal glands were producing too much steroid hormone, causing her liver to become enlarged, increased thirst and poor hair growth, among other things. Now we have a diagnosis, and she is being treated with a daily medication, you can see how much she has improved! All her hair has grown back, her liver had shrunk in size, and she has a lot more energy! #CanineCushingsDisease #Cushings #Hyperadrenocorticism #ThenAndNow #HappyStaffy #NorthMacleanFamilyVet
14.01.2022 What do you know about Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Sydrome? BOAS is a common syndrome of dogs with short, squashed-looked faces such as Pugs, French Bulldogs, British Bulldogs, and some others. Changes associated with their breeds means that these dogs often experience difficulty breathing due to elongated soft palates, narrow nostrils, underdeveloped tracheas, and a range of other conditions. Some of these conditions can be treated surgically, by reducing the length o...f the soft palate and widening the nostrils. Here at North Maclean Family Vet, we can perform soft palate resection and nare resection, with some limitations. If you have a Brachycephalic dog, ask us about our pre-surgical assessment! 13.01.2022 Wanted: one loving fur-ever home! Hello! My name is Floyd! I am looking for a lovely family to give me a new home! I am a very friendly 7 year old desexed boy that has been in the loving care of the team at North Maclean Family Vet for the last few weeks! I arrived here after a very kind person found me unable to move due to a paralysis tick, and I have been recovering at NMFV since then. My new haircut may look silly, but it was the best way to ensure there were no other ti...cks on me, as my coat is usually beautifully long. I am very smoochy, and will happily snuggle behind you on your chair or on your lap while you work! I am not bothered by the dogs that have visited NMFV, but I don’t like it when they get in my personal space, I prefer the company of people. I haven’t met another cat in a while, so I’m not sure how well we would get along, I might need some time to adjust. But I get along really well with humans! I may not be as cute as a kitten, but I would make a lovely addition to your family! Will you give a middle-aged guy like me a chance? I will be vaccinated and FIV tested, my microchip will be updated, and I will bring a bag of food and a complete parasite treatment too! An adoption fee will apply, you can enquire about me at North Maclean Family Vet! #AdoptDontShop #AdultCat #AdoptACat #SecondChance #TickParalysisRecovery #DistinguishedMiddleAgedGentleman #SweetestGuy #LapCat #FureverHomeWanted #CuteHairCut #IOnlyAskedForATrim

12.01.2022 Ever wondered what it is that your vet sees when looking down the microscope? Cytology (the study of cells) is a technique vets use to diagnose a wide range of things. Cytology is an important part of diagnosis for ear infections, urinary tract infection, lumps and bumps, and many other things. These images are some examples from recent cases of ours. The first image shows round-shaped bacteria from an ear infection, the second image shows lots of white blood cells with bacte...ria engulfed by the cells from a skin infection, and the third image shows rod-shaped bacteria from a urine sample. This examination helps us choose the right medications, or the right plan of action, and ensure that your furry friend gets the best treatment and care! #Cytology #MicroscopeExamination #DownTheMicroscope #Bacteria #WhiteBloodCells #VetVisit #VeterinaryDiagnostics #Urinalysis #EarInfection #UTI #NorthMacleanFamilyVet

12.01.2022 Today is R U OK Day In our line of work, sadly many of us are far too familiar with the loss of someone we know to suicide. Vets are four times more likely to take their own lives than the average Australian. Outside of our work, according to Lifeline, eight Australians will take their own life each day, which is double the road toll. The last 12 months have been really hard for a lot of people, and things could still be hard for a while to go. Take some time to talk to t...hose around you, start a conversation, listen with an open mind, and encourage action to make a change. 11.01.2022 Have you heard of Elbow Dysplasia? This beautiful girl is only 8 months old, but her family were concerned about some stiffness in her left front leg. Our assessment showed that she was painful around her left elbow, so we recommended some x-rays to investigate further. Can you see the abnormality on these x-rays? (Its subtle!) The x-rays showed an abnormality in the length of her radius, one of the bones in the lower forelimb. Her radius is too short, which stresses the elb...ow joint and doesnt distribute weight normally. Even though the difference in length appears quite small, it makes a big difference to how the joint works. This is known as Elbow Incongruity, and is a form of Elbow Dysplasia, a developmental joint disorder. Now that we know what the problem is, she will see the orthopaedic specialists for her treatment! X-rays are very important when it comes to diagnosing joint disease, as there are many types of abnormalities that can look very similar during an examination. Imaging is needed to be able to tell the difference between the types of joint disease, which ensures we can give the best recommendations for treatment and management. You can read more about Developmental Joint Diseases via our website Resources northmacleanfamilyvet.com.au/joint-disease #DevelopmentalJointDisease #ElbowDysplasia #OrthopaedicSpecialists #VeterinaryOrthopaedics #VetVisit #Xrays #RhodesianRidgeback #dogs #NorthMacleanFamilyVet
11.01.2022 Have you heard of Hyperthyroidism? Its a common disease that affects older cats and can cause changes in their appetite, body weight and hair coat. In some cases it can also cause heart disease. Some changes might be detectable during a physical exam, but blood tests help assess thyroid function. If you have noticed changes in your aging feline friend, you can see us for a Senior Wellness Check! You can get a physical exam, a complete blood test and urine test, and receive 25% off during the month of June! Book your Senior Wellness Check today! 10.01.2022 Summer is here! Did anyone else feel the heat this weekend? It’s shaping up to be another long, hot summer, so make sure you are prepared and aware of how best to help your furry friends during the hot weather. Heat Stress is serious risk to our pets, and if not identified and managed can be fatal. It’s important to know what Heat Stress looks like, and seek veterinary care immediately if you think your pet is unwell. This little checklist may help you identify when things ar...e abnormal. If you suspect your pet has Heat Stress then the best plan is to see your vet immediately, and provide cooling by wetting down the coat and applying a fan or airconditioning. 09.01.2022 Hows this for bad breath! This is an example of Grade 4 Periodontal Disease that we have seen. With this stage of disease, we not only see large amount of calculus over the teeth, but the gums are significantly inflammed from the bacteria housed within and under the calculus, the bone around the teeth is degenerated, and the roots of multiple teeth are compromised. Unfortunately, Grade 4 Periodontal Disease results in multiple teeth being extracted, as the damage is irrevers...ible. Untreated, this stage of disease will release bacteria into the blood stream which can cause a range of other health problems, not to mention its very painful! Our goal is to prevent your pets even reaching Grade 4 Periodontal Disease by performing dental cleaning procedures much earlier when any disease is still reversible, and by using appropriate preventatives at home. August is Dental Month! If your pet has a dental procedure with us during August, then you can trial a home preventative for free! 08.01.2022 What kind of nutrition is important for older dog and cats? Rubens family came in for an exam, a chat about his joint and skin care, and to ask about what kinds of food they should be giving their old friend. Good nutrition is important during all stages of life, but their needs change a lot throughout their life. Maybe we need to be supporting their joints, or managing their weight. Maybe we need to be treating diseases like kidney disease or thyroid disease. Maybe they are... experiencing some cognitive changes and we want to help their brain function. 06.01.2022 Christmas Season Safety Part 3 - Dangerous Item In the Home We have talked about foods that can be toxic or harmful to our pets, but what about other items in the home? Small toys are easily swallowed, and larger toys can be chewed into smaller pieces. Some even contain batteries which can be very harmful! Silica gel packets are found in a lot of packaging, and if swallowed can cause stomach and intestinal upset or obstructions. Christmas decorations can seem appealing ...to our pets, particularly cats. Items like baubles can cause cuts if broken or bitten, and tinsel can cause linear foreign bodies if swallowed. Ribbons from gift wrapping is another linear foreign body risk. Be aware of what items are in your home, and what your pets seem to find interesting! Keep them safe and happy this holiday season! 04.01.2022 You may have heard about dental diets, but do you know how Hills t/d kibble works? This kibble has a fibre matrix that acts like a toothbrush as they chew. The fibre matrix helps the kibble gently scrub the tooth and remove plaque, and not just break apart like standard kibble. Removing plaque can help reduce the development of calculus and gingivitis, maintaining better oral health and preventing painful periodontal disease. Ask us today about how t/d can help your pet, an...d why good dental care is so important! 03.01.2022 We are lucky to have specialists available to visit our clinic for certain cases. Last week we had Dr Geoff Nicholson from Veterinary Cardiac Services (VCS) visit us for a cardiac work-up of a handsome Golden Retriever named Charlie! Charlie was diagnosed with a heart murmur during his puppy vaccination health checks. Cardiologist assessment was needed to determine the underlying cause for Charlie’s murmur. Cardiac diseases come in many shapes and forms, and some are more common than others. We can help with some of the common cases, but for the tricky ones, we can consult with VCS! @vcs_australia #VeterinaryCardiology #VeterinarySpecialist #GoldenRetriever #Cardiology #Echocardiogram #NorthMacleanFamilyVet

02.01.2022 Little Miss Shadow managed to injure herself at home, and came to see us for a limp on her back leg. With some x-rays and an examination, we determined that she had a Tibial Crest Avulsion fracture. This means that the area where her patella ligament attaches to her tibia had been pulled from its growth plate! This is a common injury in young dogs, as the cartilage at the growth plate is weaker than the surrounding bone. Fortunately, surgical repair has very good results, and... Shadow underwent her procedure with us here with Dr Erica. You can see the implants on her post-operative x-rays that are pushing the fragment back into place and providing support when she walks. However, Shadow managed this injury in both legs! So she has had both of her knees operated on! She is now 3 weeks post-op and doing very well! #Fracture #TibialCrestAvulsion #FractureRepair #OrthopaedicSurgery #StaffyPuppy #VetVisit #VeterinarySurgery #NorthMacleanFamilyVet

01.01.2022 Some cats (and dogs!) love to chew fabric, elastic or string, but it can be dangerous if they swallow it. Tippy the cat has a fascination with fabric, and he accidentally swallowed some thread. This created a Linear Foreign Body, where the intestines try to move the thread along but it gets stuck at the start, causing the intestines to bunch together. In Tippy’s case, the thread got stuck under his tongue! Linear Foreign Bodies cause abdominal pain, vomiting, and can cause si...gnificant trauma to the intestines, and require surgery to remove them. As you can see, the thread that Tippy swallowed was quite long!! Damage to the intestines can be life threatening if not identified and treated quickly, but Tippy’s family were very observant so he received treatment early, and is making an excellent recovery. If you want to learn more about foreign body obstructions, then come down and chat to us! We are happy to answer your questions! #LinearForeignBody #IntestinalObstruction #IntestinalSurgery #VetVisit #EmergencySurgery #VeterinarySurgery #cat #cats #NorthMacleanFamilyVet
