24.01.2022 For centuries 'yarning circles' have been used by Indigenous people from around the world to engage, learn, and build respectful relationships. This ancient tradition is based on the principles of speaking from your own experience, being respectful and listening with an open heart and without judgement. This week, as part of our NMHS Mental Health Week activities, our Director of Aboriginal Health, Cheryl Smith, led a number of yarning circles for staff across multiple sites.... During the yarning circles, staff were asked only to talk when they were holding an object, such as a 'waitj noorook' (emu egg), 'bidang' ( feather) , 'boya' (rock), 'korel' (shell) or a 'boorn' (stick). This gave staff the opportunity to take time to reflect and listen to not only their own stories, but also the stories of their colleagues. The yarning circles are one of a series of events and activities being held across NMHS this week as part of Mental Health Week (10-17 October).

23.01.2022 As we launch into Telehealth Awareness Week (19-25 October) we bring to light the many benefits of attending an appointment via videoconference! Telehealth appointments connect you with your medical specialist, allied health professional or nurse from the comfort of your own home, all you need is a suitable device and internet connection, then we can send you an app to download it’s as easy as that! Genetic Services WA have had a huge increase in people utilising teleheal...th appointments in 2020. This year the service delivery model for Genetics has changed from 80 per cent client presentations and 20 per cent telehealth to 80 per cent telehealth and 20 per cent client presentations! Sarah Long, Genetic Counsellor at KEMH said: Telehealth has helped patients undergoing chemotherapy to remain at home when they are feeling unwell and still consult with specialists. Those patients that are autoimmune or sick can remain at home and still see the counsellors. Nicholas Pachter, Clinical Geneticist and Director Genetic Services, KEMH added: The whiteboard function and the sharing of screen function within videocall has been particularly useful to explain concepts to patients.

13.01.2022 Osborne Park Hospital staff and patients have embraced the skills and experience Jiah Reidy has brought during his 12-month cadetship with the hospital’s Physiotherapy Department. Jiah started an Aboriginal Cadetship Program with us in his final year of studies at the University of Western Australia. He will soon complete a Bachelor of Science Double Major in Sport Science and Exercise and Health whilst also keeping to his commitments within the WAFL at Swan Districts Fo...otball Club. Working in the health industry has been a lifelong area of interest for Jiah and the cadetship program meant he could gain work experience at a specialist hospital and earn an income whilst studying. It has been a terrific opportunity and I am so glad I applied for the position. I would highly recommend applying to the program, even if health is not your preference, you may be surprised at how diverse the health system is, Jiah said. #OPH #NMHSCares #NMHSInnovation #NMHSTeamwork Swan Districts Football Club
