18.01.2022 Happy days on site behind gorgeous gates #heritage #sydneyheritage #consultantlife

18.01.2022 Starting day with a client meeting at the striking Manly Town Hall... Built in 1937, this building replaced the first town hall constructed in 1879. The first town hall was a Victorian mansion named "Llangollen", built as the residence of William Rolfe (one of Manly's pioneers). Unfortunately Rolfe died before it was finished, though his family did reside there a short while. Llangollen then became a branch of the Australian Joint Stock Bank, before being purchased by Counci...l in 1909. Prior to that, Council had been meeting in temporary locations including the Ivanhoe Hotel : Manly Town Hall 1926, Manly Local Studies Collection File No. 001/001517 #consultantlife #thenandnow #heritage #manlyhistory #sydneythenandnow #history #localhistory #ilovemanly @ Manly, New South Wales, Australia

14.01.2022 Exploring hidden laneways on site..... What is now a picturesque laneway was designed for a very practical purpose: it was the access for the Night Soil Collector (aka. Dunny Man). Before there were connected sewerage systems, the Dunny Man would to go door to door to collect the waste. Client outhouses were accessed generally via the back lane, and collectors would visit every night to ensure a clean outhouse for the next morning. The sanitary conditions in early Manly wer...e not ideal, with many reports and complaints being made as early as 1870s- including a uproar about Council’s contractors dumping ‘night refuse’ in a pit near South Steyne in 1887. One of the few documented ‘Dunny Men’ of Manly was John Fox. Fox was a 22 year old man who worked at the Quarantine Station in 1900. His job was to ‘receive at the gate to the hospital enclosure the coffined bodies.... which he wheeled to the burial ground’. His other duties were scavenging refuse and night soil collection around Manly. Fox contracted plague during the Manly outbreak, which was generally attributed to his high-risk job. He made a full recovery. Second Image: The Dunny Man at Broken Hill (Source: https://trove.nla.gov.au/version/255671730) #sitevisit #history #thenandnow #sydneyheritage #heritage

13.01.2022 Sunny site visits to beautiful Moore Park for an infrastructure project... . This is Kippax Lake- once Nanny Goat Swamp. It was converted into a pond and lined with concrete so water wouldn't drain away in the early days of Colonial Sydney . It was also part of the site of Sydney's first Public Zoo, officially opened in 1884. The site for Taronga Zoo was later chosen in 1912 as the old zoo was becoming overcrowded. The name 'Taronga' was selected as it was thought to be an In...digenous word meaning 'water view' or 'beautiful view' . It would take 4 years to create Taronga Zoo and turn bush land into a modern zoo. It aimed for animals to be in an environment considered as natural as possible (for the time) . In 1916 the Moore Park Zoo closed and Taronga Zoo opened. A big part of Sydney's history. . .
