20.01.2022 This week we celebrate Women's Health Week! Womens Health Week 2019 Nationally, over half a million Australian women suffer from coronary heart disease and they often have atypical symptoms.... >40% of women will not present with chest pain. Other symptoms include: Pain and numbness in the jaw, neck, throat, shoulder, arm Shortness of breath A cold sweat Extreme fatigue Dizziness, nausea and indigestion Coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death among Australian women The good news is coronary heart disease is largely preventable and with early diagnosis and treatment together we can mitigate the associated risks of heart disease, namely heart attack and heart failure. For women, risk factors include diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, mental stress and depression, menopause, smoking, inactivity and obesity. Females 55+ should have a heart health check which includes measuring their blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol. Even young women are at risk of a heart attack, and certain pregnancy related complications, increase their cardiovascular risk. A female who has had a pregnancy related complication such as gestational diabetes or hypertension should be followed up regularly.
