25.01.2022 Does your dog become anxious when having their nails clipped? For dogs who are mildly worried, distraction can help consider a wall-mountable treat mat smeared with cream cheese or peanut butter! If your dog won’t allow anyone to clip their nails without a struggle, it’s best to enquire in advance about whether a dose of a prescription calming medication may help. This can be given to your pet at home, one-to-two hours prior to visiting. Have a chat with us regarding the best option for your dog!

25.01.2022 In summer, exercise your dog only in the cooler early morning or late evening this protects them from heat stress or being burnt by scorching pavement. If your dog starts panting excessively or seems lethargic, place them in air-conditioning or in front of a fan, and offer them water. If your pet likes swimming, a dip in a pool under supervision can be a great way to burn off their energy whilst keeping cool!

Book now at tablelandvet.com.au to ensure you do not miss out.

23.01.2022 Its often the quieter times at night when you might notice your pup chewing at their paws. This usually means their paws are itchy and inflamed, which is commonly caused by allergies, and generally heightened by springtime. If you notice your pup licking their paws, irritating their ears or developing any areas of redness, inflammation or rashes, contact us today so we can assess and treat your poochs itch.

22.01.2022 Older cats and dogs can make the best pets but that also means they require a little additional care to keep them comfy, mobile and in good health throughout their twilight years. A regular senior vet check-up is a great way for us to assess your pets condition and quality of life. There, we can discuss any tests, preventative treatments or ongoing management that might be needed to ensure your furry family member can stay happy and healthy. Book your pet in for a senior check-up with one of our friendly vets today.

22.01.2022 If you’ve got your holidays booked and you’re planning to put your pets into boarding whilst you’re away, you need to ensure that your pet is up-to-date with their vaccinations prior to boarding. Canine cough is a common respiratory disease seen in dogs, and can be especially prevalent in situations when dogs are stressed or anxious. Make sure to book your pet in with us for their vaccinations well before you plan to head away.

22.01.2022 Spring means slugs and snails in our gardens. Although it can be tempting to reach for snail bait as a quick remedy to unwelcome garden guests, snail bait contains metaldehyde or methiocarb, which, if ingested by your dog or cat, makes it deadly. As snail baits are formulated to attract snails with ingredients like molasses, many dogs can find the smell attractive too. Avoid using snail bait if you have pets and, if you suspect your pet has ingested snail bait, call us immediately.

22.01.2022 Happy Birthday to our very own amazing Sarah!! We love having you as part of our team and our friend. Have an amazing day Lots of love from your NQVS and TVS family

22.01.2022 Caused by a viral or bacterial infection, kennel cough (or canine) cough, is a contagious respiratory disease in dogs. Signs of canine cough can include a harsh dry cough, nasal discharge or an altered bark sound. We can vaccinate against many forms of canine cough, so its important to protect your pet with regular vaccinations. Speak to our friendly team for more information on what vaccinations are best for your pet.

22.01.2022 In hot weather, protect wildlife from heat stress and dehydration by putting out shallow bowls of water in shaded areas (including up in trees). To help small animals drink safely, place some rocks into the bowl that they can climb up onto. If you find an animal that looks weak or disoriented, offer them a dish of water and some shade (e.g. an open-sided cardboard box). If they still seem unwell after thirty minutes, phone your nearest wildlife rehabilitation service or our clinic for advice.

21.01.2022 Two cows, but only 7 legs? This lovely lady was born with only 3 legs! she is living out her days with her brother at the amazing @funefarm until such time that her 3 legs get too tired to carry her body. Lucky girl to have landed here

21.01.2022 If you need to transport your cat to the vet or for boarding, it’s important to always use a pet carrier, so that the cat remains safe and contained. To create a more relaxing experience for your cat, you can familiarise them with the pet carrier prior to travel and use a calming cat pheromone spray inside the carrier. Speak with our friendly team for more advice on how to make transporting your cat a positive experience for all.

21.01.2022 How great is this result? 2 days ago the lovely Hope scratched her cornea (eye) with what we suspect to be a branch. These two large lacerations have all but healed with only two days of extremely dedicated treatment by her owner, Mitch. ... Eyes in horses can be difficult to treat, and sometimes met with complications. Gosh were we relieved to see Hope again today and see the incredible healing that has occurred

21.01.2022 It’s important to always ensure your pets have access to fresh drinking water. During warmer weather, pets can quickly become dehydrated, which can lead to heat stress and can be fatal. It is a good idea to provide multiple water bowls in case one gets knocked over, and place them in a shady or protected spot so the water stays cool on a hot day.

20.01.2022 Regular dental care is a vital part of good horse husbandry, and just like people, all horses should have a complete dental examination performed at least once a year. As a prey animal, horses are very good at hiding any sort of dental pain, so you won’t necessarily know that anything is wrong until the severe. Our vets have a wealth of equine dentistry knowledge and can come to you for consultations. We have safe facilities to undertake dental examinations for horses both in-clinic and mobile. Plus until 30 November 2020, we are giving away a free faecal egg count as part of every dental consultation. So if it has been a while since we last looked inside your horse’s mouth, make a booking today at tablelandvet.com.au.

19.01.2022 Nikitta Barnes and Rachel Crosbie took the student Frank Condon out today to do some dentals, more dentals, to look at eyes, treat a couple of wounds and educate him on feeding goats, modern music, politics, religion and just general life skills...

19.01.2022 I spy with my little eye, something thats not meant to be in a dog .... with everyone out and about enjoying this incredible #fnq winter weather, we have had a run of dogs swallowing fish hooks- oops! Take care everyone, try and stick to catching fish, not greedy dogs!

19.01.2022 During spring and summer, sharp grass seeds (or awns) can stick in your pet’s fur and cut into their eyes, ears, paws or skin. These seeds are painful and can migrate deeply into tissues, causing inflammation and infection. Affected pets often require surgical treatment and may need specialist imaging to find any that have entered the body. Help protect your pet by weekly grooming to remove excess undercoat and ensure the fur around their paws, face and ears is kept short.

19.01.2022 To help support you this breeding season, we have put together a short newsletter series featuring tips, videos and advice from our veterinarians on all stages of foaling - from preparing your mare to breed, right through to ways of ensuring your newborn foal thrives. 18.01.2022 Imagine your pet in the wild. What would they eat? Tough and chewy foods that require ripping, tearing and chomping. These are exactly the kinds of foods your pet should still eat in their regular diet to help keep their teeth clean naturally. To ensure your pet’s teeth are in tip-top shape, we are giving away a free dental health goodie bag with every dental consultation. Ends 30 November 2020. Book now at tablelandvet.com.au to ensure you do not miss out.

17.01.2022 What does it take to become a dog trainer? Surprisingly, there are actually no minimum education or experience requirements to become a dog trainer, but that doesnt mean there aren't standards of excellence in the dog training world. Look out for trainers who practice force-free or fear-free training, particularly if they have qualifications from a recognised training or behaviour program.

17.01.2022 This little guy has been found on Ragnar Street in Edmonton, however his microchip details are not current. If you recognise him, please contact us at the clinic on (07) 4056 4600. Proof of ownership will be required.

17.01.2022 Follow up from our previous post (wont let us share the photo with video at the same time!) While visiting the lovely Gypsy today Dr Steph discovered she had a fractured painful, incisor tooth. We were able to extract this tooth with the assistance of sedation, pain relief and an infraorbital nerve block. ... We are all about doing things the most humane way and to the best standards! Many people fear sedation, the crush and vets doing dentistry. I think we should get over that fear and get with the times of performing best practice health care for our horses

17.01.2022 Dental disease is one of the most painful and common conditions in pets and affects roughly 8 out of 10 pets. The disease can be irreversible and the bacteria created can travel to the kidneys, liver and heart. Lift your pet’s lip to inspect for dental disease. Look out for yellow teeth, redness of gums and stinky breath. To ensure your pet’s teeth are in tip-top shape, we are giving away a free dental health goodie bag with every dental consultation. Ends 30 November 2020. Book now at tablelandvet.com.au to ensure you do not miss out.

17.01.2022 An equine Veterinarian is visiting the Innisfail region on Wednesday 19th May. If you would like to book an appointment please comment below or contact the clinic on Ph: 4056 4600.

16.01.2022 Exercising pets during the heat of the day can result in heat stress and other injuries, such as burnt paw pads. During warmer weather, it can be a good idea to exercise your dog during the cool of the early morning or later in the evening. You can also exercise your pet on grassed areas to ensure they’re protected from the heat of pavements or roads. Always ensure your pet also has access to fresh drinking water after exercise to prevent dehydration.

16.01.2022 This little one has been handed into our clinic this afternoon! Please contact us if you recognise this kitten so we can it home. Proof of ownership is required for collection.

16.01.2022 Urine spraying can mean a number of things, such as stress and anxiety, territory-marking or a variety of medical conditions, including renal failure and urinary tract infections. If your cat is urine spraying, bring them in for a check-up. We can perform a full physical examination, discuss any further tests that may be required and explain the treatment options available to help manage your feline friends sprays.

15.01.2022 Love them or leave them, magpies are an iconic Australian bird. When nesting, magpies swoop their perceived threats to protect their young. Smart enough to distinguish friend from foe, magpies may even extend their trust to you by taking some feed. Although its not recommended to feed wildlife, if you do, find a natural source like mealworms from a pet store, as mince and other human foods are not balanced enough for our feathered friends.

14.01.2022 Just a tad cool (and CUTE) ...

14.01.2022 Shared from Tableland Veterinary Service Sometimes we get called about the most dramatic cases! This was our Sunday afternoon. This poor horse was stuck with two legs off the side of a bridge wedged between the bridge and a log. Luckily, about 8 years ago, a group of Tableland Veterinary Service vets gave up their weekend for a course in Townsville on Large Animal Rescue for exactly this scenario. Drs Tamara and Mick, with the help of Atherton Fire and Rescue, and the horse a...nd property owner, worked together to free the horse. The process involved sedating then anaesthetising the poor pony, rolling the her to extricate one leg at a time, then moving the anaesthetised horse backwards up the bank to a safe area to recover. This amazing patient cooperated at every step. She recovered from her anaesthetic brilliantly and walked away with only some skin scratches. It was a wonderful example of team work by all the people (and horse) involved. See more

12.01.2022 Happy Birthday to our one and only Dr Steph!! We hope that you have a lovely day with your beautiful family and friends Thank you for being there for us (always!!) and being an absolute amazing leader, mentor, friend and person From your extended fam bam NQVS

12.01.2022 Have you ever wondered why pets need anaesthesia for dentistry? There are several reasons. Firstly, we cant reason with your pet to tell them it will all be over shortly, so keeping them calm, still and awake while using ultrasonic scalers and polishers in their mouth would be terribly difficult. Secondly, general anaesthesia is preferred to sedation. Not only does it allow the airways to be kept clear and avoid aspiration but, most importantly, it keeps your pet stress-free and pain-free.

12.01.2022 We are looking at doing a Mossman/Port Douglas run in the next couple of weeks If you are interested in taking advantage of this run - MAREEBA - MT MOLLOY - JULATTEN - MOSSMAN - PORT DOUGLAS - SURROUNDING AREAS - please flick us a message or contact us at the clinic on (07) 4056 4600.

11.01.2022 Have you noticed your pet shaking their head or scratching their ears? These signs can indicate a problem with your pets ears. Ear disease can be painful and can be caused by infections, allergies or foreign bodies. If you notice any ear redness, discomfort, irritation, odour or discharge from your pets ears make an appointment with us so one of our friendly vets can examine your pet to diagnose their ear problem and treat any potential diseases.

10.01.2022 As spring begins to near, skin allergies will rear their unpleasant heads too. Allergy treatment in dogs has come a long way, and with such a range of new treatments available, relief is conveniently at hand. Allergies are best treated before a flare-up becomes severe, so if you start to notice your pup with red skin, pustules or increased scratching, make an appointment with us today. Prevention is always better than cure.

10.01.2022 These are fantastic

10.01.2022 Although the arrival of spring hopefully also means the arrival of warmer weather, pets with arthritis will still require management into the warmer months and beyond. Arthritis in pets is a chronic condition requiring ongoing year-round treatment to help keep them comfortable and as active as possible. Book an arthritis check up with one of our vets today to keep your pet playful and pain free.

10.01.2022 Most mares will start cycling in spring although 20% of mares cycle continuously throughout the year. Mares that have foaled will come into season around 7 days after foaling (the foal heat) and typically ovulate 10 days after foaling. This may be a good time to breed your mare but this is best assessed on a case by case basis in discussion with your vet. After that, the mare will come into season approximately every 21-22 days. Subscribe to our Foaling Season advice newsletter and you will go into the draw to win a Super Strength Mesh Combo Horse Rug, worth $219.99! Visit https://cutt.ly/WfmPube

09.01.2022 UPDATE: Reunited with his family This little dude has been handed into our clinic this afternoon. If he is yours or you recognise him, please contact us so we can get him home to his family Proof of ownership is required for collection.

09.01.2022 Have you noticed your cat displaying slightly more aggressive behaviour towards you, your family or other pets? Status-induced aggression might be one reason. This means your cat is trying to establish social dominance within their household. Avoid rewarding your kittys aggressive behaviour with play, attention or food. If you notice your cat blocking doors or swatting household members as they pass, just turn a blind eye until they have relaxed.

08.01.2022 *UPDATE* He has been reunited This little dude was found on the highway and brought in to our clinic this morning. Unfortunately he doesn't have a microchip. If you recognise him, please contact us at the clinic (07) 4056 4600

07.01.2022 Dr Annette’s gorgeous dog, Luca and cat, Cece are the best of friends. How cute is this pic?

07.01.2022 Installing a cat scratching post inside your home can be a great way to encourage cats to scratch without ruining your favourite furniture. Scratching posts come in all manner of shapes and sizes - you can even build your own. Scratching behaviour is normal in cats, so providing them with one or more scratching posts will help save your furniture and keep kitty happy.

07.01.2022 Happy Birthday to our beautiful Elise!! We know youll have an awesome day at work with all of us Thanks for everything you do and for putting up with your NQVS family

07.01.2022 One year ago Bella came into NQVS for a health check, and a heart worm test. She had been diagnosed and treated for heartworm 2 years prior and after strictly adhering to the slow kill method, it had ultimately failed. She was starting to show signs of exercise intolerance and her heart and lungs were becoming compromised from these awful parasites that live in the dog’s heart. When it comes to Heartworm in dogs, prevention is DEFINITELY better than the cure! Treatment is ri...sky and the injections required to kill these adult heartworm parasites are nasty. However, when we have no other good choice, we have to manage these risks and with the owner’s support, progress with treatment. Here we are with Ashley, Bella, Dr Nikitta 1 year on. Celebrating a negative heartworm test and a happy patient who now has the all clear to pursue her crazy-fun life of chasing tennis balls at Goomboora Park. If you have any questions about the heartworm prevention status of your dog, do not hesitate to give us a call. We have seen an influx of cases in the last couple of years. Prevention is key!

06.01.2022 UPDATE: REUNITED WITH HIS OWNERS :-) Thanks everyone for sharing This little guy has been handed into us at the clinic this morning. He has a microchip, however the phone number is not up to date. If he is yours or you recognise him, please contact us at the clinic. Proof of ownership is required for collection.

06.01.2022 In this beautiful summer weather, cats love their light sunbathing and most dogs love to join their family on a beach trip or picnic. If your pet enjoys water, they’ll happily join you for a dip in the pool (just make sure they can actually swim and that they’re always supervised by an adult). If your dog is the active type, they may also make a great outdoors exercise buddy. We would love to see photos of what you and your pets are getting up to this summer!

06.01.2022 We are on the look out for some experienced veterinary nurses to join our growing teams in Malanda, Atherton and Edmonton. Exciting general practice caseload where no two days are the same. AMAZING group of colleagues who do incredible work, celebrate each other's wins and love caring for our patients, clients and one another. If you or someone you know might be a good fit for our team, check out the details on our website at www. tablelandvet.com.au/careers.

05.01.2022 If you’re heading away on holidays and leaving your pets in the care of a pet sitter, it can be a good idea to notify us about: when you’ll be away, your best contact details and if you have any instructions in case your pet requires any emergency or healthcare treatment. Speak with our friendly team before you head away and we’ll place a note on your pet’s file so we can be best placed to help your pet should anything happen whilst you’re away.

05.01.2022 When was the last time you gave your pets mouth a check-up? Even minor dental disease can increase the risk of kidney, heart disease and other whole-body problems. Signs of dental disease include: bad breath, stained teeth, drooling, facial swelling, difficulty eating and pain when touching the lips or face. If your pet hasnt been in for a mouth check-up lately, call us to make an appointment today.

04.01.2022 This video shows why we should be extra grateful for our farriers! Thanks for your skills and the great job you do

04.01.2022 Hot weather can cause your pet to suffer dangerous heat stress. Pets are at higher risk if they have a snub-nose, thick fur or pre-existing respiratory issues, or if they’re overweight. In hot weather, ensure your pet has shade and cool water, and avoid vigorous exercise. Don’t leave them in a car unless they’re supervised and have air-conditioning. If your pet seems weak, dull, drooling excessively or panting heavily after being in the heat, soak them with cool water and phone us urgently for advice.

04.01.2022 A mares pregnancy is typically described as being around 340 days. However, there is a wide range and anywhere from 320-370 days is normal. Typically a mare will have a similar length pregnancy for each foal, so if a mare foals earlyat 330 days each time, shes not really foaling early 330 days is normal for her! And remember, before worrying that your mare is overdue, make sure you have an accurate service date for the correct mare! Subscribe to our Foaling Season advice newsletter and you will go into the draw to win a Super Strength Mesh Combo Horse Rug, worth $219.99! Visit https://cutt.ly/WfmPube

03.01.2022 If you notice your dog shaking their head, scratching their ears or giving off a bad odour from their ears, they might be suffering from an ear condition. Infections, allergies, parasites and foreign bodies can all cause ear irritation in pets, so its important to have your pet examined to determine what treatment may be needed. Give us a call today to keep your pet comfortable and their ears healthy.

03.01.2022 To keep our cats and dogs healthy, their diet ideally requires a balance of wet and dry pet food, to ensure they receive all of the essential vitamins and minerals that our pets need. Just by chewing and crunching their biscuits, our pets are keeping their teeth clean and reducing their plaque build-up. For tips on occasional treats beneficial to healthy teeth, speak with us today.

02.01.2022 There is a reason we all love watching puppies and kittens play. Play is a universal sign in most animal species that an animal is happy and secure. Lambs and calves chase each other, cockatoos often swing upside down on power lines, tigers will hunt leaves and kangaroo joeys play by hopping around their mum. We love happy pets, so tell us, how does your pet like to play?

01.01.2022 If your pet undergoes a dental procedure, they’ll need a bit of TLC afterwards! A dental clean can leave gums feeling a bit sensitive, so it’s best to offer your pet a softer meal that night. If your pet needs any large teeth removed, they should not be given hard foods, treats or chew toys for a few weeks afterwards, to allow their gums to heal. Please chat with our team if you have any concerns or questions!

01.01.2022 The mares vaccination and worming should be up to date and scheduled to happen again around 2 months prior to foaling. Vaccinations should include Hendra virus and 2-in-1 (tetanus and strangles) it is safe to use in pregnant mares and as well as protecting the horses, vaccination will also protect you and your vet if intervention is required at foaling time.
