25.01.2022 If you were listening to ABC Radio this morning you may have heard a familiar voice! Dr Chris Stelmaschuk had a chat with Mornings host Jonathan O’Neill about some of the issues men face and how men can look after themselves a little better! If you missed it the link is below with the interview starting at 05:36. #menshealthweek #healthyman #mensclinic https://www.abc.net.au//programs/mornings/mornings/12351852

24.01.2022 NSGP would like to thank everyone for their patience when trying to book appointments. There is something in the water here with 4 of our docs having had babies in the past few months! As a result we are down on availability, and our waiting times are longer than we would like at the moment. Rest assured that we are working on increasing appointment availability, including recruiting new doctors who are coming in the new year. We thank you for your understanding!

24.01.2022 We have more reason for celebrating this week.. today is international receptionist day! Being a receptionist at a medical practice is an exceptionally difficult job at times, but ours (again in our unbiased opinion) are the best in the world! Thank you to our unsung heroes Nicky, Kerrie, Teresa, Chey, Maddy and Ella! #internationalreceptionistday

23.01.2022 ***Coronavirus update - Monday 1st June *** Apologies that it has been a while since our last update. Thank you North Queensland and Townsville in particular for leading the way in protecting the community against Coronavirus! While we move to Stage 2 of restrictions being eased its important to not lose any complacency along the way, by following very simple recommendations... The first is to continue social distancing and good hygiene practices. Follow the guidelines given by the authorities. Also please Download the coronavirus app - it will save lives! Secondly PLEASE STAY HOME IF YOU ARE UNWELL. Don’t go to work, shops or other public places if you are unwell, and don’t send your kids to school/daycare if they are unwell. Thirdly. If you have a fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, loss of taste associated with Cold or Flu-like symptoms you are encouraged to have a coronavirus swab at he Reid park drive through testing area or at the Townsville hospital. We will only truly lock this virus down if we are identifying it early in the community. North Shore General Practice are continuing to offer Bulk Billed tele-health consults for those that require it. We are slowly reintroducing more face to face sessions however are currently still restricted by the amount of people/patients we can have in the building at any one time. Please follow the instructions given by staff when booking or when you arrive at our front doors. We love our patients and we love our community. We are working hard to keep everyone safe and we look forward to helping you further! https://www.covid19.qld.gov.au//DPC7309-COVID-19-Restricti

21.01.2022 If you have any symptoms of cough, cold, fever, sore throat etc please head down to get tested!!!

21.01.2022 This is pretty incredible.. social distancing and good hygiene has not only stopped Covid19 in its tracks but has also knocked the flu on the head! Statistics from the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System show we had above average flu cases up until social distancing measures were put in place, resulting in a 99% percent reduction in influenza cases in May 2020 compared to the same time last year! (Let’s also give a shout out to high influenza immunisation rates and reduction of international travel)

20.01.2022 Please be careful out there and continue to take precautions including social distancing and good hygiene practices!

20.01.2022 Perhaps a good thing the medical profession continues through the age of electronics..

16.01.2022 Queenslanders are doing a great job keeping coronavirus away. However we need ongoing vigilance to keep it this way. 16.01.2022 Scam alert If you receive a phone call claiming you have been in contact with a positive COVID-19 case and need to pay for a testing kit to be mailed out, h...ang up the phone. This is a scam. If you are ever a close contact of a positive COVID-19 case our Public Health Unit will phone you; however, any follow-up testing is free. If you have symptoms including fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, runny nose and fatigue visit our COVID-19 drive-through assessment clinic, now located at the Kirwan Community Health Campus, or, for those in Charters Towers, Ingham, Ayr, Home Hill, Hughenden or Richmond please visit your GP or hospital emergency department for testing. If you are on Palm Island you can be tested at the Palm Island Primary Health Care Centre. All COVID-19 testing at Queensland Health facilities is free and confidential. For further advice, contact your local doctor or call 13HEALTH (13 43 25 84).

16.01.2022 COVID-19 detected at Townsville wastewater plant Townsville Public Health Unit has detected traces of COVID-19 in the Cleveland Bay Wastewater Treatment Pla...nt in Townsville. The plant serves the city and southern suburbs of Townsville. Townsville Public Health Unit director Dr Steven Donohue said the benefits of sewage testing is that it could indicate the possibility of undetected cases of COVID-19 in the region. People shouldn’t be alarmed but they shouldn’t be complacent either, if you are sick go and get tested and then stay home until you get your results, he said. This surveillance testing is extremely sensitive. It picks up tiny pieces of genetic material (RNA) of COVID-19. This is dead virus material so there is no risk to the community or to drinking water. This is our first positive sample and we will be doing further testing over the coming days to confirm this detection. Dr Donohue said it was imperative the community understood that the positive result does not necessary mean there are active cases in Townsville. There are no known outbreaks or active cases in Townsville and hasn’t been for some time, he said. However, this positive sample means that we cannot rule out the possibility that there was or is an infected person in the area who has not been tested. It could also be an indication that someone who has previously had COVID-19 has visited our area and is still shedding the dead virus. This detection should serve as an alert and warning to the community to be vigilant for Covid-19 symptoms, such as fever, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, or loss of smell or taste. Dr Donohue said anyone with any symptoms of COVID-19, no matter how mild, should get tested immediately. Dr Donohue also said there had begun to be some myths circulating the Townsville community about testing for COVID-19. Getting a test does not mean you have to quarantine for 14 days, you just have to go home until we text your results which takes about 24 hours, he said. People who tested negative for COVID-19 in March or April can still contract the disease and if they get sick again, they should get tested again. Free, convenient and confidential COVID-19 testing is available across Townsville at: 1300 Smiles Stadium COVID-19 drive-through community assessment clinic The 1300 Smiles COVID-19 community assessment clinic is located in the Eastern carpark of the 1300 Smiles Stadium in Kirwan. We encourage the community to use this clinic as their first preference. This clinic is open from 8AM - 7PM, seven days a week. No referral or appointment is necessary. Reid Park drive-through COVID-19 community assessment clinic The Reid Park COVID-19 community assessment clinic is located at Reid Park, next to the Townsville Civic Theatre on Boundary Street. Please follow the signs. This drive-through community assessment clinic is open from 8.00AM 4.00PM, Monday to Friday. Please stay in your vehicle. No referral or appointment is necessary. Townsville Aboriginal and Islander Health Service (TAIHS) pop-up clinic Townsville’s COVID-19 pop up clinic is now located at Townsville Aboriginal and Islander Health Service (TAIHS) in Garbutt, at the corner of Meenan and Gorden streets. The clinic will be open from 9am until 2pm from Monday to Friday. No referral or appointment is necessary.

09.01.2022 Now is the time to action those checkups for yourself and your mates Though mental illness is not a gender-specific issue, alarming statistics show that m...en are four times more likely to suicide than women. Mental Health Service Group clinical director Dr Jason Lee encouraged men to think of mental health with the same importance as looking after their physical health. The number of men who die by suicide in Australia every year is almost double the national road toll, Dr Lee said. On average, one in eight men will experience depression and one in five men will experience anxiety at some stage in their lives but the big issue is that men are much less likely to seek help. A lot of stigma still exists around men needing to be ‘tough’ and having a ‘she’ll-be-right’ attitude and this often leads to the problem getting worse and symptoms to compound. Dr Lee said there were a number of ways to look after your mental wellbeing. Stay connected; loneliness shouldn’t be underestimated and can be a trigger for bigger issues. Have a beer or a coffee with a mate, join a local sporting club or check out some community groups to grow your social network, Dr Lee said. Exercise also shouldn’t be discounted, and get plenty of sleep. Finally, while looking out for yourself is vital, it’s also important to check on your mates. Many men aren’t wired to talk openly about their feelings, so showing your mate that you’re there for them may even save their life. #MensHealthWeek2020 #CheckYourMates This week (June 15-21) is Men’s Health Week. Over the next week our experts will be sharing health tips and advice for the men in our community, urging them to look after their physical and mental health and encouraging positive lifestyle choices to foster a long and healthy life. For more information on Men’s Health Week and useful resources, visit www.menshealthweek.org.au

09.01.2022 The perinatal period from conception to your child’s first birthday can be an overwhelming one for many fathers. But ongoing feelings of constant exhaustion..., changes in appetite, irritability, anger or moodiness, emotional withdrawal, fear of caring for your baby, reliance on alcohol or drugs to cope, high physical stress levels, or suicidal thoughts, could be a sign that something more serious is going on. #PANDAWeek2020 is this week (8-14 Nov), aiming to raise awareness around perinatal mental health an issue that many are surprised to learn affects men too. One in 20 men experience depression during their partner’s pregnancy and up to 1 in 10 new dads experience depression following the birth of their baby. It’s important to recognise that perinatal anxiety and depression is a medical condition a temporary and treatable one and support is available. If any of these symptoms are red flags for you, or something you’ve noticed in your partner, you can contact the PANDA National Helpline on 1300 726 306 or speak to your GP as soon as possible. #TellSomeoneWhoCares #healthymale #PANDA #fatherhood

Karen oversaw some huge changes including moving from Woodlands and expanding to the North Shore area in 2012. 04.01.2022 Children's Health Queensland have some great resources for young children to help support them during and after disasters. This one is about Birdie and the Virus, you can watch it online or download the ebook to read. https://www.childrens.health.qld.gov.au/covid-19-birdie-vi/

03.01.2022 ***Coronavirus Update 25/9/2020*** As the threat of covid-19 remains relatively low in Townsville we plan to increase our face to face capacity in early October, while continuing to offer telehealth as an alternative. Please be aware we are still bound by social distancing rules which limits the amount of people we can have in the practice at any one time. Patients may be asked to wait in the comfort of their air conditioned cars if the waiting room is full, so please follow... the directions of our lovely staff! For those that are unwell, particularly with coughs and colds, fevers or general illness we still ask that initial assessment is done over the phone and we can see you face to face in our isolation rooms if necessary. We still ask and encourage people with symptoms to have Covid swabs at the designated testing areas prior to coming. If you are unwell and are having trouble getting into us there is a designated "Respiratory Clinic" at the Upper Ross Medical Centre that can do covid swabbing and assessments. We thank everyone for their consideration in these times, and appreciate all of your efforts in helping keep Townsville safe, and an amazing place to live!
