25.01.2022 You say tomato...I say Passata For those of us that cook with tomatoes (mmmmm.... meatballs), many people find that canned tomatoes not only have more flavour, but also wont' go off & disintegrate in the bottom of your fridge (always a fun task). But did you know that pretty much all cans are lined with plastic (aka BPA). In the case of tomatoes, they are pretty acidic meaning they break down that BPA a lot faster than say a chickpea - and that BPA ends up in your tomatoes.... Ewww. Thankfully most supermarkets stock Passata which is produced in a glass jar & contains almost 100% tomatoes. Better yet - it's got a lid so you can pop whatever you don't use in the fridge - plus the jar makes a good water bottle for the fridge when you're done. Easier... and healthier. Happy cooking!

17.01.2022 You see, I see, we all see Vitamin C We touched on Vitamin C earlier this week but I just wanted to talk about it a little more because at this time of year Vitamin C can be a real game changer. Here's a few reasons why: 1. Vitamin C supports our trusty macrophages (pacmen-like white blood cells I mentioned in my last post) which chase down & destroy bacteria. Thanks guys!... 2. Vitamin C is fantastic for our adrenal glands. Don't know what they do? All you need to know if you're stressed... they're really feeling it! 3. It's a natural anti-histamine (who'd have thought) - great for preventing asthma attacks or dealing with itchy eyes 4. A lot of us have a tendency for high copper. This is because zinc & copper work together in a ratio... kind of like work/life balance (and we all which one wins). Vitamin C helps rebalance these ratios 5. This is the real clincher for me: Every single person who I've prescribed Vitamin C has said something along the lines of "I got sick.... and then I got better". This may not sound much except when you consider these are people who would get sick & stay sick for weeks or even months on end. So, grab a capsicum, munch on some kiwi fruit & chow on some leafy greens - they are all great sources of Vitamin C.

16.01.2022 A very big congratulations to one of my favourite clients who has successfully completed Feb Fast - ditching both alcohol & chocolate for a whole month! So proud of you :)

12.01.2022 This article is a great reminder that if you do nothing else - DON'T drink your calories. We all find it hard to resist sugar (not surprising given its 8x more addictive than cocaine & lights up the please centre of our brain like its New Year's Eve) - but if you just want to make ONE positive change then lay off the soft drink, juice & sports drink.

11.01.2022 Do you sea food? I once heard a fellow nutritionist say "You can't be healthy unless you eat foods from the sea". Big call! But today I saw some stats on iodine deficiency in Australia's population. It turns up to 78% of our kids aged 5-13 are also iodine deficient. Whaaaaat????? ... Why? Well it turns out we all live in the wrong country (sorry peeps). The type of soil we have is simply iodine poor. OK I'm sure someone somewhere will say we've over-farmed & depleted it ... but the reality is there wasn't much there in the first place. Hmmmmso much for golden soil & wealth for toil. Anyway lucky our land is girt by sea. That’s right iodine comes from sea foods. We’re talking not just fish & seafood but also sea vegetables like seaweed. So next time you hit sushi train do your thyroid gland a favour (oh now’s probably a good time to mention iodine is essential for your thyroid gland) and grab one of those yummy seaweed salads or anything else that looks green and slimy.

08.01.2022 Bath TIme After a big couple of stressy days I decided I needed to bring my brain down a notch. So I hopped in the bath & chucked in some Epsom Salts ($6 from Woolies). Why Epsom Salts I hear you ask? Epsom Salts are just magnesium sulphate - and believe it or not magnesium is absorbed remarkably well through the skin. As many of you may know magnesium is very calming to the nervous system. This means it's great for not only tired muscles but frazzled nerves, anxiety & j...ust generally feeling like you can't turn off. So next time you find the time (always in short supply I know) to have a bath. And this best thing about this tip - it works on kids too. It's a great chillaxer for hyper/teary/overtired kids. So happy bath time people :)

06.01.2022 Warts in your shorts? OK now that I have your attention... a lot of clients ask me about warts (but not in their shorts) and if there's anything they can do. Well - yes there is & it's surprisingly easy! A number of years ago my son had a wart on his toe under the nail. I took him off to the doctor who applied it & dutifully agreed to return in a few days for a follow-up treatment. When I rocked up the next time a different doctor prescribed a tablet which was actually used... for 'warts in your shorts' but SHOULD work for this inconveniently-placed wart. The catch? It was $100 for one tablet. Call it my stingy Scottish/Libran nature or call it something else - but I decided to ask Dr Google. He/She advised that Oil of Oregano was the go. I was a little dubious but at the cheap price tag ($20 a bottle) I thought 'Why not"?. Twice a day for 2 weeks I applied a little drop of the oil to my son's toe. One day I went to repeat the process but couldn't find the wart. In fact I couldn't even tell what toe it had been on (does that make be a bad Mum?). The skin had obviously healed under the surface & the wart just popped right off. Why did it work? Oil of Oregano is, among other things, a very strong anti-viral. And because warts are caused by a virus - well you can connect the dots. We've encountered a few warts since that first one & the oil has worked every time. I'm even still on the initial bottle.

02.01.2022 Goodbye Lindt Balls.... (insert sad face here) The World Health Organisation is now recommending that we cut our sugar intake to 6-12 teaspoons per day (3 for children). What does this mean? Well for me this means that I am going to have to seriously rethink my sneaky Lindt ball habit - which has become a bit of a daily fixture. Time to replace it with a piece of fruit I feel (which thankfully isn't included in the 6-12 teaspoons). ... But to put the recommendations into context a serve of tomato sauce has 1 teaspoon of sugar, a (really small) serve of Uncle Toby's Plus breakfast cereal has nearly 2 serves of sugar, and a can of soft drink has about 9 teaspoons. Why make the change you ask? Well the laundry list is pretty long... but the thing which always sticks in my head is that sugar is the favourite food of bacteria. So by cutting back on sugar (for you & your family) you're less likely to get sick. For me this meant my kids went from being sick every other week - to almost never. But at the end of the day we're all still human. So if you do have a pretty good diet & choose to indulge in a sugar treat once in a while (as I do) - remember to enjoy it & stop having a guilty conscience!! http://www.who.int/nutrition/publications/en/

01.01.2022 My own personal pacman I recently did a presentation on how to boost your immune system coming into winter. During the session I showed a YouTube clip of a macrophage (white blood cell which acts kind of like a Pacman in our bodies) actively chasing down some bacteria . Given it turned out to be a real crowd pleaser (go figure)... I thought I'd share it here. These clever little cells work their pants off to prevent & fight off winter infections.. and they thrive on Vitam...in C just like I thrive on winter sun on a chilly July day. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnlULOjUhSQ
