25.01.2022 Nundah Community Support Group Inc. has formally changed its name to Northside Connect Inc. The name change reflects the fact that we, like the communities we service, are evolving. While we continue to be based in Nundah and be a prominent stakeholder in that area, we know that our clients are from a wider area than that and that we are also very much a part of the fabric of Brisbanes northern suburbs. Our links with local, state and federal Governments, organisations and ...entities reinforce that. As Northside Connect Inc, we will continue to be a strong and distinctive voice for the interests of our local and broader community. Management and staffing of Northside Connect Inc will also remain the same and we will continue to deliver services via our 3 program areas; Domestic Violence and Family Support Clinic, The Nundah Neighbourhood Centre and the Brisbane North Community Legal Service. Northside Connect looks forward to letting you know about a formal launch of our new name just as soon as social distancing requirements allow for that to occur. It will be a celebration of both our past and our future and we would very much like for as many as possible to be as part of that. For further information please contact the Coordinator Sharon Gingell on 07 3260 6820 or [email protected].

25.01.2022 In 2011, The Norwegian Nobel Committee decided that the Nobel Peace Prize would be divided in three equal parts between Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Leymah Gbowee and Tawakkul Karman. They were acknowledged for their non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for womens rights to full participation in peace building work. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, once a Liberian President and Leymah Gbowee, a social worker and peace campaigner from the same country, shared the prize with Tawakkul Karman, an activist and journalist who has played a key opposition role in Yemen.

24.01.2022 Thank you to Commonwealth Bank Toombul branch for their generous donation of $500. This donation will greatly assist in finding up to 8 weeks of community lunches for 40 to 45 people. At Northside Connect we are very adept at making a dollar stretch, by utilising donated food from food rescue programs such as OzHarvest and Second Bite as well as the local community. Each week our volunteers cook a delicious hot meal with all welcome to attend when we reopen the program in the new year.

19.01.2022 Did you know? On average, Australian women have to work an extra 56 days a year to earn the same pay as men for doing the same work. The unfortunate fact is that women are still not paid equally to that of their male counterparts, women still are not present in equal numbers in business or politics, and globally womens education, health and the violence against them is worse than that of men.

01.01.2022 Social media has helped spread the word about the womens movement around the world. In 2011, a fight led by Saudi Arabia women to be allowed to drive received great global attention. The women used Facebook and twitter to create large action, which challenged the driving ban for more than two decades. This gave women new freedoms who have long lived under repressive laws. However, weeks before the driving ban was lifted, many womens rights activists were arrested. Some have since been released on bail, while others have remained imprisoned. While it is important to celebrate the milestone for Saudi women, is it important to remember the women who fought are still being punished for their activism
