18.01.2022 The end of February is the last day of summer. On this day each year Kidsafe Qld would like you to remember young Summer Steer who lost her life after swallowin...g a button battery remember all the children who lost their lives as a result of an unintentional injury, and acknowledge those children and families living with the consequences of preventable injury. Summer’s Day - the last day of February - is named in memory of a little girl who died after swallowing a button battery that burned through her oesophagus and into her aorta. Summer represents the 75 Queensland children who die each year from unintentional, preventable injuries and the 90,000 Queensland children who attend emergency departments or are admitted to hospital each year. ‘You don’t know what you don’t know’. Every year terrible things happen to children to parents who are watchful and vigilant. Yes, terrible things also happen to children whose parents who are a bit ‘slack’ you might say. It only takes a second for a child to fall out of a cot or off a balcony, to get caught up in a blind cord, fall off a quad bike or to run after a butterfly or ball in the driveway. Bad things happen to all parents. The hurt can stay inside and it can be hard to return to ‘normal’ (if ever). Feelings of guilt, shame and fear of ridicule are reasons parents often do not talk or seek help. Our job at Kidsafe Qld is to alert parents, carers and the community of the types of injuries that are killing and injuring kids and to run campaigns to prevent these from happening. This year please open your heart and think of all the children who have been killed or seriously injured and don’t judge, because every parent suffers dreadfully from the loss of a child especially when they know it could have been prevented. You can post your stories or donate to Kidsafe Qld https://www.summersday.com.au/ See more

13.01.2022 Despite the increased popularity of tongue tie surgery, most babies with feeding problems don’t require surgical management. A skilled paediatric special and language therapist can assist mothers and babies breast feed successfully.

13.01.2022 Inhaled nuts, carrot and other foreign bodies are a weekly problem at the children’s hospital. Unfortunately they can be lethal. Please don’t feed your infant or toddler these raw foods. Nut butters are a safe way to introduce nut proteins and reduce risk of allergies.
