11.02.2022 Common questions: Language & Emotions One of the most common concerns we hear from parents is "I just wish s/he could tell me how s/he feels". Children experience a wide range of emotions and feelings. To tell us about these, children need to:... Know the word(s) that match their feelings Understand that talking about feelings is something people do We can help children learn the words for their feelings by interpreting their actions, e.g.: you threw the toy: I can see that you're frustrated you're hiding: that tells me you're worried about something I can see you're excited about your present: you're jumping up and down! We can also help children develop both these skills by making it a habit to talk about our feelings, in the moment. Talk about a range of feelings, appropriate for your child's age, e.g.: I'm excited that my delivery is coming today I'm worried about missing the tram I'm annoyed that the car battery died To help children learn to talk about their own feelings, we can give them many, many examples of other people talking about their feelings. When we interpret our children's feelings, and when we talk about our feelings, we are showing our children examples of what to say, and how to say it. We use whatever method our child is learning to use to communicate: English home language Auslan AAC Remember: Make it a habit: little and often is likely to be most effective. Describe the little feelings, not just the big feelings. Use accurate and specific language: if you feel "good" or "bad", try to narrow it down. Use neutral and objective language: remember that the goal is to communicate an experience, not to blame or shame. Putting words to your internal experience gives children examples of how to describe their own internal experiences. They may not be the same as yours, but the more examples children hear, the more likely they are to find the words that express their experiences well. Talking about emotions doesn't have to be unprofessional. We can always find ways to talk about feelings appropriate to the early childhood education, or school context. #speechtherapy #speechpathology
06.02.2022 Quick tip to build language skills: Narrate, narrate, narrate Narrate what your child is doing: kids learn words when they hear words that match what they are thinking... when we narrate, kids hear our words at just the right time to start learning we expose kids to the words that match what is important to them kids learn lots of types of words, including names, actions, descriptions when we make this a habit, kids hear these words lots of times, which helps them learn faster Narrate what you are doing: if we want kids to talk about their daily life and their needs, they need to hear us talking about these things first when we narrate our actions, kids hear the words that go with their daily experiences kids hear a wide variety of words for the names and actions around them when we make this a habit, kids hear these words lots of times, which helps them learn fast #speechtherapy #speechpathology
18.01.2022 Listening to our kids builds their trust. We can put all of the best communication strategies in place, but it's how we listen that makes a difference

17.01.2022 Its strategy day-Monday! Today we're using book reading to develop comprehension skills. Key strategy:... Turn book reading into a conversation Helpful tips: Explain new ideas and any new words. Go beyond the text and explain your own ideas. Talk about the past. Connect ideas in the book to past experiences. Talk about the future. Predict, imagine, brainstorm what might happen next. Talk about feelings and opinions. Characters' feelings and opinions or your own. #speechtherapy #speechpathology

09.01.2022 Most people know that speech pathologists work with speech , but did you know that we work to support *all* forms of communication? Speech pathologists also help people to sign , gesture , text , write , use visuals , and use specialised devices to express themselves. We're interested in helping people express what's on their mind in the most effective and most efficient way possible.... @drawntoaac illustrated it beautifully **** #betterlanguageandcommunication #accessiblecommunicationadvocacy #aacawareness #complexcommunicationneeds #speechpathology

30.12.2021 Quick tip to get kids talking: Thought of a question? Rephrase it as a statement. Questions: test what kids already know... have kids repeat the same words again and again restrict the types of responses kids can give restrict the topics kids can talk about increase anxiety require kids to guess what we want them to say have kids practice being responders, as we direct the interaction teach kids how to be good interviewees Statements: allow us to introduce new ideas to the conversation allow kids to hear words or ideas they may not have heard before balance the conversation between adults and kids may decrease anxiety by giving kids more control over what they can say allow kids to practice a wide range of words and language skills teach kids to value their own ideas have kids practice sharing conversations
24.12.2021 Let's combat some misinformation about language Aboriginal English: not bad English, just a different variety of English.
