17.01.2022 A message from our Head of Officials @Calia Hanks Nwb ... "By far the rule I get the most questions about from our senior competitions is the Unsportsmanlike Foul. FIBA has 5 criteria for this type of foul, but the one that creates the most questions is criteria 3 (C3): An unnecessary contact caused by the defensive player in order to stop the progress of the offensive team in transition. This applies until the offensive player begins his act of shooting. ... Have a watch of the videos below to get a better understanding of what is a normal foul and what is unsportsmanlike in transition under C3. You will notice some trends: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AA3liQbm8-M https://youtu.be/Apcgz0Sm4sU - Foul is deemed normal when the defender slides laterally in an attempt to get in front and causes body contact - Foul is deemed normal when the defender turns their body away and reaches down to the ball - Foul is deemed unsportsmanlike when the defender makes contact facing the player with an outstretched arm Whilst these are not black and white rules, these are the actions that influence the referees decision about whether the defender has attempted to play legal defense. Please note, as in any foul situation, if there referee deems the illegal contact to be marginal and to not have any effect on the player (eg doesn't slow them down, change their rhythm or put them off balance) then they may choose to have a no call and let play continue. If you have any rules questions or feedback about games, please don't hesitate to get in touch" Calia can be contacted via the details below: 0423 486 546 [email protected] @Calia Hanks Nwb
