23.01.2022 E X E R C I S E R I G H T . Exercise Right Week @exerciseright_aus is an annual campaign run by Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) @essansw and this year’s theme for Exercise Right Week 2019 is Active Ageing. It is an opportunity for us at North West Exercise Physiology to help encourage all Australian’s to Move More and Age Better . Despite the well known benefits of regular exercise, did you that:... Only 17.2% of those aged over 65 are meeting the physical activity guidelines 7 in 10 older people are overweight or obese 1 in Australians age 65 and over experienced disability that limits activity Almost 9 out 10 people aged 65 and over have at least 1 chronic condition . We want to change these stats by helping to motivate those who don’t exercise to move more. Being physically active and staying fit and healthy will help you to get the most out life, no matter what your age is! We also want to demonstrate to all Australians the importance of seeking the right exercise expert for their requirements. 20.01.2022 P R E S E N T M O M E N T . We have all heard it before, and probably more than once, that is important to live in the ‘present moment’. More often then not, we have difficulty properly enjoying what is right in front of us. In our current twenty-first century lives, it is understandable that this isn’t easy as we always have something coming up that we need to prepare for or anticipate, and our lives have become so well-documented that has never been easier to get lost enti...rely in the past . A base level of stress, unhappiness and anxiety have become the new norm with our fast-paced lives and chaotic schedules. The cure for this? Being consciously aware and a commitment to staying in the now. Some of our tips for being in the here and now are: Smile More you are the one in control of your attitude every moment of the day, keep it optimistic Appreciate Everything no matter what it is, sight, sound, smell, emotions, success or failure, soak it in and appreciate it! Remove Possessions discard of anything that is associated with past memories as minimalism forces us to live in the present Stop Worrying our personal favourite one because you can’t fully appreciate today, if you worry too much about tomorrow. Reality is, tomorrow is going to happen whether you want it to or not! . We let the present slip away and allow very little time to practice stillness and calmness. Practising mindfulness will enable us to realise that we aren’t really our thoughts, but an observer to our thoughts moment to moment without judging them. 19.01.2022 W I N T E R . Most of us are waking up in the dark, leaving work in the dark, and spending a good proportion of the day time desk-bound. It can then be a struggle to head outdoors, or to the gym on rainy, and cold days, when eating a hearty meal in the warmth is a more attractive option. But, no matter the time of the year, exercise is needed for our overall health and wellbeing . Exercising in winter can help ward off the winter blues, boost energy levels, and assist with ...weight management during the time of the year the majority of people add some extra insulation. These are our top cold-weather fitness tips to stay safe, fit and warm: always start with an adequate warm-up to increase blood flow and body temperature to help decrease the risk of injuries keep hydrated, even if you don't feel thirsty dress dry, and not just warm, and opt for bright colours if you are heading outdoors embrace winter by undertaking winter sports for exercise . Don't let the colder months stop you from moving! For more information contact us at [email protected] or visit www.northwestep.com.au See more
18.01.2022 B U R N O U T . Burnout is not merely the result of long hours; it is more the reaction to prolonged or chronic job stress. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recently announced that it would recognise burnout as a disease, and from the year 2022 it will allow healthcare providers and insurers to acknowledge, treat and cover the symptoms . Burnout can be managed in the short term; however, it can be extremely detrimental for both our physical and mental health and wellbein...g. Some of the signs that we should look out for that may indicate burnout include: feeling physically and mentally exhausted chronic tiredness and fatigue insomnia or trouble sleeping depression or anxiety constant sickness as a result of a weakened immune system forgetfulness or lack of focus . Whether you are past the breaking point or recognised some of the signs and symptoms that are on the road towards burnout, it's time to pause and change direction. We like to use the three 'R' approach to deal with burnout: 1 Recognise - watch out for all the small signs of burnout 2 Reverse - seek support and strategies to manage stress to undo the damage 3 Resilience - take care of your physical and mental health to build up your resistance to stress . 16.01.2022 P A V S. E X E R C I S E . Physical activity and exercise are two interchangeable terms used to describe our movement and often confused with one another. However, they have two distinctly different meanings . Physical activity in daily life includes any body movement that contracts your muscles to burn more calories than your body would normally do so just to exist at rest.... Exercise is physical activity that is planned, structured, repetitive, and purposeful. . Regardless of which one you do, ALL physical activity is seen in the research to positively contribute to our overall health and well-being. Exercise can more so assist with improvements in physical fitness (cariorespiratory, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility and body composition) . 15.01.2022 P R E S E N T A T I O N S . For the last two years, I have been walking in out of this building, supervising exercise sessions, collecting data, separating blood, exchanging research knowledge with fellow PhD candidates and attending seminars and workshops to learn from the experts in our field . A couple of days ago, I got the opportunity to present my knowledge and findings on the role of exercise in weight management in this same building. Aside from being able to pres...ent alongside experts in public health, it was an opportunity to educate several GPs, surgeon's and other allied health professionals, wanting to know the practical application of exercise in weight management . It's a liberating feeling when you are confident in your knowledge and have trust in the research you have immersed yourself in for the last three years! Looking forward to more of these opportunities to educate those who utilise exercise as medicine . For more information contact us at [email protected] or visit www.northwestep.com.au See more

07.01.2022 C H A L L E N G E S . The reality is, is that challenges are part of everyday life. We have to face challenges that test our emotional and physical capacity everyday day, but regardless of what the problem is, how we handle them is key . Life challenges have a direct relationship in defining our purpose in life, and they enable us to see ourselves at our best and our worst. It's important to remember that, whatever the problem, there is almost always a solution ... . Some of the strategies that we use to help carry are through these challenges are: turning toward reality rather than away embracing life as it is rather than what we wish it be practising gratitude taking our time . 04.01.2022 M E N T A L S T R E N G T H . Mental strength to us means the ability to regulate our emotions, manage our thoughts and behave positively, despite the current circumstances. Developing mental toughness has been about finding the courage to live accordingly to our values and being bold enough to create our definition of success . Building mental strength involves more than just willpower; it requires continuous hard work and commitment. Below are some ways we keep ourse...lves prepared for whatever comes our way: Readiness for change - learn to be flexible and adaptable Detachment - focus on what you can control and avoid wasting time taking things personally Patience - don't expect a quick fix solution for everything, anything worthwhile takes hard work and endurance . 01.01.2022 S E L F - W O R T H . Self-worth is defined as "the sense of one's value or worth as a person". However, there are many ways we value ourselves and assess our worth as a human being, and some have a greater psychologically benefit than others . How do we build our self-worth?... stopped comparing ourselves to others avoided evaluating our every move challenged our inner voice/critic . Although it is "easier said than done" at times, start by acknowledging and noticing your suffering, be kind and always keep in mind that imperfection is part of our human lives and something we all have in common . 01.01.2022 I L L N E S S . With winter well and truly upon us, we often get asked, "should I exercise if I'm sick?" We understand that when you are in a good routine, you don't want to lose momentum, but is it safe? . When our patients are unwell, we generally advise:... Sleep - focus on getting adequate rest Hydration - keep your fluids up Intensity - consider reducing the intensity . Listen to your body, if you are in doubt, just rest! Always follow the advice of your doctor .
