17.01.2022 Exploring Autumn This week, the children are exploring the season Autumn using play based invitations. First, we made some fresh play dough using just a hit of orange essential oil. The invitation including loose parts such as large autumn leaves that we collected on our walk during the weekend and the smaller leaves fallen in our back yard! Also included were autumnal spices such as a cinnamon stick, peppercorns, cloves, black cardamom and star anise. Lots of p...incer grips and fine motor activity happened at the table here! Next, the children painted autumn leaves using fine brushes in red and yellow. The direction of growth in infants is proximodistal, meaning starting from the middle and radiating outwards: from the trunk to the arms and then hands and fingers. We do a lot of fine motor play and play using our hands to facilitate working these muscles. Today the children engaged in autumn themed cutting practise. They cut red and yellow paper strips using our Faber Castell junior safety scissors.
17.01.2022 MORE THAN A WORD. RECONCILIATION TAKES ACTION Reconciliation Australia’s theme for 2021, More than a word. Reconciliation takes action, urges the reconciliation movement towards braver and more impactful action. Reconciliation is a journey for all Australians as individuals, families, communities, organisations and importantly as a nation. At the heart of this journey are relationships between the broader Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people...s. To our new supporters, please remember the importance of privileging and amplifying First Nations’ voices as you add your voice to calls for reconciliation and justice. We all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation, and in playing our part we collectively build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures, and futures. 2021 marks twenty years of Reconciliation Australia and almost three decades of Australia’s formal reconciliation process. 15.01.2022 Happy Mothers Day This week, we have created a Mother’s Day picnic, teddy bear style! The children have been given opportunities to engage in imaginative play as they poured cups of tea to share with their peers and feed cake to the teddy bears! The children are also given opportunities for fine motor development by filling the heart with little buttons as loose parts.... Indoors, the children are presented with a Mother’s Day themed literacy station. They have enjoyed discussing the flowers and the colours of the different bouquets and drawing bouquets for their mothers, making it a language rich literacy experience.

09.01.2022 National Simultaneous Story Time 2021 (NSS). The children of North Willoughby Family Day Care are very excited to be participating in NSS today. We were very lucky indeed to be read the book, ‘Give me some space’, by Dr. Shannon Walker, live from the International Space Station! National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and ill...ustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. By facilitating NSS we aim to: promote the value of reading and literacy, promote the value and fun of books, promote an Australian writer and publisher, promote story time activities in libraries and communities around the country, and provide opportunities to involve parents, grandparents, the media and others to participate in and enjoy the occasion. For the first time ever, not only will the official story for National Simultaneous Storytime be read by over 1 MILLION kids across Australia and New Zealand on Wednesday 19th May 2021, but it will also be read by an astronaut from the International Space Station!
