25.01.2022 We all know what it can be like during the holiday season. For most adults, healthy eating is thrown out the window. For kids - its often toothbrushing. Its a great idea to remind children that even though theyre on holiday, their toothbrushes arent! One idea might be to create a holiday toothbrushing chart. Click on the link below for one made by NIB Dental. If they remember to brush every day, consider a reward such as a movie, special dinner or a trip to the park. If this doesnt appeal, you can also try a toothbrushing app such as Heroes of Hygiene or Disney Magic Timer. https://nibdental.com.au///11/nib-teeth-brushing-chart.pdf

25.01.2022 Falafel is usually made from chickpeas and can be purchased at your local supermarket. For a healthier choice, you can put them in the oven instead of frying them. Falafel can be served in a pita with salad and greek yoghurt as a dressing and is a more tooth friendly and healthier lunch box option than jam or honey sandwiches.

25.01.2022 How much water have you had today? A persons saliva is made up of 99.5% water. Water helps break down food, prevent decay and also helps clear away nasty bacteria. If you dont drink enough and start to get dehydrated, it can cause your saliva to thicken, resulting in potential dental problems. It is recommended that a person drinks 35mls per kilo of body weight. Thats just over 2 litres for someone who is around 60kgs.Take a moment to calculate (weight x 35) and see if youve had enough water today!

25.01.2022 Around 1 in 9 people have asthma (about 2.7 million Australians). For those who require an inhaler, we recommend swishing with water and spitting out afterwards. This will ensure the residual medication doesnt cause harm to your teeth and gums. If youd like to learn more, dont be afraid to ask at your next dental visit.

24.01.2022 Does your child have a loose tooth that wont fall out? Sometimes it can appear as two rows of teeth or be mistaken as a broken tooth. We find that often when we give the child time and encourage them to wriggle it out, the baby tooth eventually comes out naturally. In other cases, your childs dentist may need to lend a hand. With Jack, his baby tooth was being stubborn and Dr Rebecca helped wriggle it out with the help of some happy gas. Jack didnt even know the tooth had been taken out as he was too busy watching his favourite show on the iPad!

24.01.2022 A common interpretation is an association with feelings of powerlessness and loss of control. We hope there was no gum disease in your dream! The biggest cause of tooth loss in adulthood is from gum disease. To avoid this, we recommend teaching children from a young age, the importance of brushing twice and flossing once daily, and in the teenage years, not to take up smoking.

23.01.2022 We all know it’s important to get TWO servings of fruit a day! But does this include dried fruit? The answer is NO! In fact, dried fruit is full of sugar... Take a small box of sultanas. They contain around 90 dried grapes, which is a whopping 30g or 7.5 teaspoons of sugar! Yikes! Sultanas are a dentist’s worst nightmare because they have the same amount of sugar as lollies but are also sticky, so cling to the teeth for hours Instead, we recommend keeping to fresh fruits for kids like watermelon and berries

22.01.2022 It can be hard to get little ones feeling comfortable around the dentist. But as paediatric specialists, we have a couple of secrets up our sleeves One of those is the ‘tell-show-do’ technique. And it’s pretty self-explanatory: ... 1. We tell kids what’s going on in their mouth 2. We show them what we’ll do 3. And then we do it! So why does it work? Because involving kids in the process helps put their mind at ease Plus, it’s also a useful method for prompting them to take involvement in their dental and oral health. And that’s a WIN-WIN!

22.01.2022 Today is our first day back and were all feeling fresh and ready to see our happy visitors. Were hoping to help many of you achieve your goals for healthy smiles in 2020. See you at your next visit!

22.01.2022 It has been a very difficult week for us in dentistry, as Im sure it has been for many of our NPD family in various industries. Due to the escalating risk of Coronavirus to both our patients and staff I have decided to close the practice for all dental treatment from Monday March 30th until April 30th 2020. We believe the safest place for everyone is at home. ... If your child is in pain please contact us and leave a message. We will be able to guide you with information about pain relief and/or antibiotics if needed. If your child has a facial swelling or dental trauma, please contact: DURING HOURS: Westmead Centre for Oral Health ph 8890 7839 AFTER HOURS: The Childrens Hospital at Westmead ph: 9845 0000 Well keep track of everyone needing to reschedule and will be in touch over the next month to organise an alternative appointment. Please stay safe and in your houses to flatten the curve. Kind regards, Dr Rebecca Eggers

22.01.2022 Taste bud cells last approximately 10 days before they are replaced by new ones. Dead cells can build up on the tongue and contribute to bad breath. If youre concerned that your child has bad breath, help them clean their tongue after they brush twice, daily.

22.01.2022 Happy Valentines Day! Heres a little tip if you plan on wearing a red lippy to mark todays occasion. Choose a cool toned red lipstick to make teeth appear more white. The blue tones in the cooler reds offset the yellow in teeth, as these colours sit on opposite ends on a colour wheel.

20.01.2022 Who else can relate to this?! Share your experiences with us in the comments below. We could all do with a good laugh on a Monday!

20.01.2022 People vastly overestimate how long they are brushing for with only 17% of manual toothbrush users brushing for 2 minutes. Using an electric toothbrush makes a huge difference, with 66% of users meeting the 2 minute recommendation. What different methods do you use to time your childs brushing? Let us know in the comments below.

20.01.2022 New year, new toothbrush? Here are five fun facts about toothbrushes: 1. A toothbrush should be replaced every three months. As the bristles start to fray, they become less effective. 2. Electric toothbrushes remove 20% more plaque than manual toothbrushes. 3. Toothbrushes are best stored in open air. An enclosed case traps moisture which results in more bacterial growth! 4. Soft bristles are the way to go!... 5. The most expensive toothbrush to date retails for $4200 US dollars! See more

20.01.2022 Lia is one of our friendly Oral Health Therapists who spends her day helping children learn how to look after their teeth. Shes also the happy face behind some of the articles on our website. If you havent seen our Learning Hub on the website, just click on the link below. https://nwpd.com.au/learn-about-brushing-flossing-and-dent/

19.01.2022 Does it really matter if you brush for less than 2 minutes? Yes it does! Brushing for 45 seconds leaves behind almost 66% MORE plaque than brushing for 2 minutes.

19.01.2022 We often get asked whether an interdental brush can be used instead of floss. The answer is ‘no’. These two tools are used for different purposes. Interdental brushes help clean around braces and can be useful for cleaning between teeth where a space (black triangle) has been formed over time from gum loss (rarely in children). The reason we recommend flossing is to help disturb plaque in between, where two teeth sit against each other, to prevent decay from forming. An interdental brush will not fit in these areas and using them on a child can damage their gums. For more information on flossing, click on the link in below. https://nwpd.com.au/flossing-for-kids/

19.01.2022 Has your child had a tooth removed before it fell out naturally? A space maintainer can hold the space for the adult tooth that is yet to come. Why is this important, you may ask?... If too much space is lost, the adult tooth may get stuck when it attempts to erupt. A space maintainer can help your child avoid future treatment and you avoid extra costs.

19.01.2022 Did you know that we welcome assistance dogs into our clinic? It’s all part of our commitment to supporting equal access to all children. So what better excuse to welcome in October or should we say ‘Dogtober’? ... An initiative by Assistance Dogs Australia, Dogtober is dedicated to celebrating dogs who provide help to those with additional needs. Have you got a canine worth celebrating? Show us your four-legged friend in the comments below!

18.01.2022 Miss S is a six year old who visited us for her first dental check up. At first sight, no obvious cavities are visible but we detected some subtle shadowing under our bright lights and magnification. A set of x-rays confirmed that Miss S has cavities (decay) in between her teeth. Flossing is really important to prevent this type of decay, because the toothbrush bristles most often do not fit in between teeth and these areas are left uncleaned. If you too are hearing this for the first time, do not be afraid to ask your childs dentist to show you how to floss your childrens teeth. @ Norwest Paediatric Dentistry

17.01.2022 It’s time to meet our Oral Health Therapist of the month the lovely Lia Mendoza! A proud potato lover (in every shape and form!), Lia is passionate about spreading awareness about how to achieve optimal oral health. She knows it’s not as simple as telling young people to ‘brush your teeth!’ And instead focuses on providing TARGETED ORAL CARE PLANS.... Plus, as a busy mum, Lia understands the challenges many parents face in having to keep their children’s teeth clean. Book your little one in to see Lia today: https://buff.ly/3jPlWdW

17.01.2022 Sparkling water can be a healthier alternative to soft drinks but it can cause some damage to teeth if consumed frequently. Some still contain sugars in them and it is always best to go for unsweetened options. Keep in mind that plain sparkling waters are very acidic (pH 3 which is close to Coke at pH 2.5) and can lead to erosion. Our recommendation is to have natural water as the main daily source of hydration.

17.01.2022 We love traditions and growing up in Australia, it is very common to tell a child that a tooth fairy will visit to collect baby teeth. Did you tell your child something different or had a different tradition growing up? If so, let us know in the comments below.

16.01.2022 1.) Limit lollies to times of the day that are close to toothbrushing (breakfast and dessert). Yep we all know kids will be into the lolly stash at breakfast! 2.) Create a holiday toothbrushing chart to help kids remember whilst they are out of their usual school routine. See our last post where you can print one out! 3.) Choose lollies with fast oral clearance rates (ie dissolve fast and can be washed away) over sticky lollies that get stuck in teeth. 4.) Encourage lots of water to keep kids hydrated and saliva flow high. Saliva is our friend as it dilutes acids and washes away food particles. 5.) Try out an electric toothbrush (maybe Santa can bring one!). We love them because they brush away 20% more plaque than a manual toothbrush.

15.01.2022 One of our favourites is popcorn! If youre looking for a new snack idea for an upcoming movie night, we LOVE Woolworths idea of creating cheesy popcorn and veggie snack packs. Click on the link below to see their recipe. https://www.woolworths.com.au//cheesy-popcorn-and-vegie-sn

15.01.2022 Another interesting observation is that people clean the side of their mouth that is opposite to their dominant hand, better. If your child is right handed, ask them to spend a little extra time cleaning the right side. Due to the angle, it is most likely that they have cleaned their left side better.

14.01.2022 Today is UN World Children’s Day This important event raises awareness about children’s welfare. At Norwest, we’re passionate about keeping kids happy and healthy. And we strongly advocate that optimal oral health be available to every child. ... Book an appointment to visit our clinic: https://buff.ly/31ZiffV We can’t wait to see you!

14.01.2022 Yesterday was World Diabetes Day. Diabetes awareness is important for many reasons including dental health. Why? Because people with diabetes have a higher risk of tooth and gum problems.... And that’s another reason why dental check-ups are essential! Think it’s time for your next dentist appointment? Get in touch: https://buff.ly/35TGv4i

14.01.2022 Want to hear a funny joke? Hold on, you’ll need to brace yourself! All puns intended, while we’re not an orthodontic clinic, we can still help children with braces keep their teeth healthy.... That’s right if your child or teen is having orthodontics, you can bring them in to our clinic for their normal dental check-up. Kids with braces on should still see a dentist every 6 months. We can help them keep their pearly whites in tip-top shape. Sound good? Book an appointment today: https://buff.ly/34M1zdu

13.01.2022 If youre concerned that your child has bad breath, our first recommendation would be to ensure that they are brushing twice daily and flossing between their teeth. The main cause of bad breath in children is the bacteria found in plaque. This needs to be removed with a toothbrush and unfortunately, mouthwash will not help! Bacteria is often harbouring on the tongue so make sure that area is also being brushed. If you think your child still has bad breath, please organise a check with your dentist. Other causes can be mouth-breathing, nasal airway obstruction or reflux that may need a referral to a medical specialist.

13.01.2022 We want to know: how many teeth did your child have at 12 months? Was it four? Maybe five? Or perhaps it was already eight! No matter how many teeth they had, 12 months is the time they should start visiting a dentist.... Why? Because even from their very first tooth, they can start to form dental decay. Is your little one about to hit the 12-month mark? Learn more now: https://buff.ly/3na3wI6

12.01.2022 Thats $38,749.52 AUD!! We wonder what the person ended up doing with the tooth!

11.01.2022 Thats a pretty picture isnt it? Not sure who has time for that, or whose kids are going to eat it, but wed love for everyone to try to pack some veggies SOMEWHERE in the lunchbox. Whether its on sandwiches or in wraps, hidden in zucchini muffins or your kids are ok eating raw carrot or cucumber sticks, please try and include a serve of veggies (or two!) to reduce the sugar content over your childs day at school. 5 veg and 2 fruit servings a day for the win.

11.01.2022 We prefer natural popcorn over chips as a snack for a few reasons. Popcorn contains more fibre and less saturated fats. It also contains other goodies such as Vitamins B1,3 and 6, magnesium, iron and potassium to name a few. If you dont have a popcorn machine or a stove top, you can put 2 tablespoons in a paper bag, fold up the ends and put it in the microwave for approx. 1.5-2.5mins (depending on the wattage).

10.01.2022 TRUE or FALSE time: You can’t floss with braces. False! This is a common misconception. While it might seem hard to floss with braces, it’s very possible. In fact, flossing is especially important for kids with braces. It dislodges food and prevents plaque from accumulating. ... But how to do it? There’s special floss that’s designed for braces. We can show you how to use it. Or if you need to pick up a packet for yourself drop in today! As always, we’re here to help

10.01.2022 That means some people have more bacteria in their mouth than the amount of people in the entire world (estimated population of 7.53 billion in 2017). Although some of the bacteria is good, this sure does encourage us to pick up our toothbrush and floss!

09.01.2022 Crunchy fruits and vegetables such as apples, celery, cucumbers and carrot sticks are a great snack option as they can help disrupt the plaque on teeth and arent as sticky as other snacks such as dried fruits. As with any food, we always suggest having a sip of water afterwards so that there isnt any left behind.

09.01.2022 Cereal is a quick and easy breakfast option that is easy to prepare. Some cereals are very high in sugar so its a good idea to read the labels. In this article, we give tips on how to check the cereal packaging to find the more tooth-friendly options. Just click on the link below. https://nwpd.com.au/the-best-and-worst-breakfast-cereals-f/

09.01.2022 It’s always a pleasure receiving fan mail like this! Looking forward to seeing you and your little one next time, Jasmine!

08.01.2022 TRUE or FALSE time: White teeth = healthy teeth BIG false! While you might like the look of pearly white teeth, they don’t always indicate good dental health. ... In fact, bright, ‘healthy’ looking teeth can still be riddled with cavities or other infections So how do you know if your teeth are healthy? Book regular dentist check-ups even if your teeth are sparkling white!

08.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW Over your lifetime, your mouth will produce enough saliva to fill TWO swimming pools That’s around 25,000 litres... So it must do something useful, right? Saliva is extremely beneficial, as it helps protect teeth, aids in digestion and helps us speak comfortably. Saliva even helps us taste our food!

07.01.2022 We already know that sugary foods aren’t great for our teeth. But did you know that foods without simple sugars can still cause decay? How? One word: carbohydrates. ... Refined complex carbohydrates are in foods like white bread, crackers and pasta While they’re good for us in moderation, think of them as an amber colour in the traffic light system They’re okay as part of a balanced diet, but not every day. Some kids are hard-wired to love carbs making it a challenge to keep them both happy and healthy. But fear not, we’re here to help you slowly transition your child towards healthier food options. 07.01.2022 Turn toothbrushing into some serious fun with Pokémon Smile! This new app is great motivation for kids to brush their teeth for the required two minutes! 07.01.2022 After brushing, we recommend spitting out toothpaste, but NOT rinsing. Toothpaste contains fluoride which helps to heal the teeth from sugars and acids. If your child does not yet know how to spit properly, make sure you are using a small rice grain sized amount of toothpaste.

06.01.2022 Hands up if the pandemic’s been getting to you! In fact, we’ve got a whopping 21 fun and creative uses for floss! Above all, floss is BEST for removing bacteria and preventing decay ... https://buff.ly/30q1byL See more

05.01.2022 Should your child still have their baby teeth? Well, it depends on their sex and age. Girls tend to lose their lower front teeth at around 5-6 years of age and boys at around 6-7 years. So, on average, we get 6 years with baby teeth ... But if it’s a little later, don’t be concerned. There is a large normal age range, but the delay might be because of an extra tooth, a missing tooth or crowding. Your dentist will monitor this and may recommend an x-ray later on if needed. But for now, take as many photos of those cute baby teeth as you can! Because once they’re gone, they won’t come back!

04.01.2022 Heres a fun dessert idea! Top some delicious watermelon with plain greek yoghurt and chopped up fruits. Healthy and fun to eat for the kids!

04.01.2022 FACT or FICTION: Diet soft drinks are okay for our teeth Fiction! While diet soft drinks don’t contain the sugar that’s in regular soft drinks, they’re highly acidic. And this can create a breeding ground for cavities!... The acid in diet drinks eats away at enamel, creating tooth sensitivity. So steer your little one away from too many diet soft drinks and save them for special occasions only. Water is the best everyday drink.

04.01.2022 Does anyone else out there have a child who is fussy with food? Sometimes children will eat something simply because it is more fun. Now, theres definitely no expectations to make an elaborate crab like above. For a quick way to make a snack like fruit fun, just use a cookie cutter to cut them up into different shapes. 02.01.2022 Sandwiches are an easy lunch for kids but where do we sit on the different spread options? We recommend avoiding spreads high in sugar such as: Jams Nutella ... Honey Why? 02.01.2022 Master L, aged 8.5 years, clashed heads with a friend on the trampoline last week. His front adult tooth was fractured quite badly, with the nerve exposed. Fractured teeth with exposed nerves should be treated ideally within 24 hours of the accident to give the tooth the best chance of survival. Master L was a champion patient and with the help of some happy gas, he let Dr Jacqui cover up the exposed nerve and build his tooth back up. Master L and the NPD team will be firm friends over the next year as we carefully check the health of his tooth.
