20.01.2022 On the 27th of October, two year 10 science classes took part in the University of Adelaide’s Floating Houses Ingenuity STEM project. This project explored the living conditions of people living around/on Cambodia’s Tonle Sap Lake and challenged collaborative groups of students to design and construct a floating structure using simple materials (cardboard, ping pong ball, recycled materials, string). Students competed with one another to see which group could design a ‘house’ that held the most ‘people’ (marbles) before sinking. This activity evoked thoughtful discussions on costs, climate, buoyancy/density of objects, accessibility of knowledge and materials, appropriate technology and more.

20.01.2022 ~Our Week in Sport~ The Summer Season of Sport is well and truly underway, with all our teams performing very well. Our Middle Girls Tennis team have been improving every week and had their best match of the season on the weekend, losing narrowly to Marryatville High School. The girls have shown great commitment each week and it is so pleasing to see their hard work paying off with some clear improvements. The highlight of the weekend was the nail-biting boys Cricket match a...gainst a very strong Adelaide High School side. Electing to bat first, we came out on fire with our star opener blasting 20 runs off the opening over and finishing with a quick fire 48. Defending a score of 137, it all came down to the final ball, with scores level. Adelaide High managed to score a quick single off the final ball to win in what was an outstanding match! House Sport - Table Tennis This term the Middle Campus held a House Table Tennis tournament, with students representing their House in attempt to become the singles champion. After a gruelling group stage over 2 weeks, 8 individuals made it through to the finals draw, with students from the Red and Gold House eventually making it to the Grand Final. In an epic match, the Gold House was too strong in the end and come out victorious in straight sets. Congratulations to the Gold House!

19.01.2022 ~Wellbeing Wednesday~ For most of this year, families have been navigating the ups and downs of a new reality involving remote learning, working from home and lots of family time. The latest turmoil is focused on Victoria, with the state being in various stages of lockdown. However, a second wave of the pandemic is starting to impact other areas of Australia and New Zealand. 18.01.2022 ~Wellbeing Wednesday~ A SPECIAL REPORT: Celebrating Fathers Day For many years now, the role of fathers has changed and evolved. During the industrial revolution, fathers were often considered detached and distant due to working long hours in factories. However, today things have changed dramatically with many dads being celebrated for being sensitive, caring and more hands-on.... Recent studies have shown that children benefit greatly from having fathers who are present and interacting in everyday activities. This has transformed the understanding of how fathers shape childrens lives from the start, challenging conventional ideas of parenthood and gender. Research also suggests that fathers influence their sons and daughters in different ways, which is especially true during their transition to adolescence. Engaging in regular physical activities can play a key role in influencing children to learn self-control, face challenges, regulate emotions and take manageable risks. In this Special Report, fathers will learn about the positive impact they can have on their childs mental health and wellbeing, whilst also ensuring they indulge in a little self-care. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback. If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help. Here is the link to your special report: https://nmhs.sa.schooltv.me/wellbei/celebrating-fathers-day

16.01.2022 ~Wellbeing Wednesday~ The mental health of todays young people is at an all-time low. Depression, anxiety and self-harm are sadly on the rise. Unfortunately, there are more risk factors than protective factors, facing young people growing up. To parent effectively, it is simply not enough to avoid the obvious dangers like abuse, neglect and overindulgence. Parents therefore, need to arm themselves with practical skills, knowledge and strategies when it comes to raising child...ren. Numerous studies suggest that the best-adjusted children are reared by parents who find a way to combine warmth and sensitivity with clear behavioural expectations. 13.01.2022 ~OUR WEEK IN SPORT~ In what has been a crazy year for School Sport, 2020 threw another spanner our way last week with COVID restrictions unfortunately bringing a premature end to the Summer season of sport. Although a disappointing conclusion, I look back at so many sporting highlights over the year and feel very fortunate that our students had a chance to represent the school and engage in sport, when at times it looked as though we wouldn't be able to. Several of our teams ...finished their season as premiers, including our Middle and Senior Badminton teams and our Middle Girls Netball Team. Our First XI Boys Soccer team finished second in the Messenger Cup, which is the highest school soccer league in the state. Finally, our Senior Boys and Girls Knock Out Badminton teams finished 2nd and 3rd in the State Competition. All these are such amazing achievements by our students, but I would also like to acknowledge all students who engaged in our sports program and represented our school positively. Over the year I've seen students make incredible improvements in their sport and build lasting friendships with teammates. I would like to thank everyone who contributed to our Sport Program this year, in what has seen some very challenging times. Our parents, students, teachers, and amazing coaches all help to build a strong sporting program. Looking forward to another great year of sport in 2021! Mr Marner Sport Manager

04.01.2022 WELLBEING WEDNESDAY Teenagers sleep tends to be less regular than the sleep of adults and young children. This means that the times when you go to bed on the weekend are not at all the same as on school nights. On weekends, you may go to bed much later. You may also wake up much later on the weekends. Late bedtimes on school nights makes it hard to get enough sleep. This is because you need to wake up early for school. You should aim for at least 8 hours of sleep on school nights. https://nmhs.sa.schooltv.me/newsletter-resource/2317/2265
