25.01.2022 Calling all our kindergarten 2021 families. Please get your enrolment forms (even if you havent got all paperwork that goes with it quite ready yet) as we need this plus the survey done by next week as we are allocating children to their groups for next year. We aim to then have children on their 2021 groups for pre-kinder in term 4. This allows them to begin to know the children who will be in their class in kindergarten. We will not be certain about who the kindergarten teachers are until later in term 4 so the groups will be about the children not the teacher.

25.01.2022 HAPPY FATHERS Day to all those celebrating! We hope you have had a special day.

20.01.2022 What a wonderful couple of days some of our grades 1 and grade 2 classes have had at Hagley Farm School Visitor Centre. The quality of the experience ensured that every child was engaged and participated beautifully. Thank you to the staff at the Visitor Centre and congratulations children for making the most of this experience. Enjoy some photos from day 2.

19.01.2022 Can you help Eleni & Grace who are working hard to support those in need? Please send any donations you can to the school office.

19.01.2022 Today 14 students from 5/6 who are in our F1 InSchools teams walked to Queechy HS to work with Mr Djakic and some grade 9 students to design their cars and work on their posters for the competition in mid October. It was great to see the fantastic space that Queechy has, and to see a car be created.

19.01.2022 Thanks to Mrs Andrew and her grade One class for hosting our Early Childhood assembly today. We are focusing on trying to BE KIND - to ourselves, our friends, other children in our school, our teachers and staff, and our families. Please encourage your children to demonstrate and to notice small acts of kindness. Congratulations to our wonderful certificate winners today!

10.01.2022 In a year where so many people have missed out on so much throughout the world, we have been very fortunate at Norwood as our students have been able to participate in so many experiences and events. Just a reminder to parents that our 5/6 Swimming Carnival is on tomorrow. Please remind your children to bring bathers, towel, sunscreen, plastic bag and a drink. Due to Covid restrictions parents unfortunately are unable to attend.

09.01.2022 eSafety is aware of distressing reports about a suicide video circulating on social media. Weve contacted the social media platforms and are working together t...o monitor the situation. Please follow our advice below. * If you see this video online report it to the social media platform its on, or to eSafety at www.esafety.gov.au/report/illegal-harmful-content. * We encourage parents, carers and educators to avoid raising the issue of the video directly with young people who may not have heard or been exposed to it. Instead, we encourage proactive conversations with children about distressing content they may come across online, letting them know they can come to you or another trusted adult if they feel upset or uncomfortable by it. * Monitor young people who are more vulnerable and at-risk. If a young person is presenting with signs of distress, schools should follow their own procedures for managing and supporting students at risk. * If a life is in danger call Triple Zero (000) right now. * Anyone who may be at risk or experiencing emotional distress, including worried family and friends, to contact one of the following services: Kids Helpline Official 1800 55 1800. https://kidshelpline.com.au/ Suicide Call Back Service 1300 659 467. https://www.suicidecallbackservice.org.au/ headspace 1800 650 890. https://headspace.org.au/ Lifeline 13 11 14. https://www.lifeline.org.au/ Beyond Blue 1300 22 4636. https://www.beyondblue.org.au/

09.01.2022 Exciting Launching into Learning news:

09.01.2022 We are so fortunate to have the Hagley Farm School Visitor Centre provide such wonderful experiences to our students. This week it was the turn of our three kindergarten groups who experienced the joy of Spring on a farm.

08.01.2022 Canteen News Quelch Frozen Fruit Sticks and Kreem-B-Tweens will be available for order on the Qkr! App in Term 4. No over the counter sales available. Thank you!

07.01.2022 I've taken the kids away camping for a few days to unwind in nature, feast on marshmallows and to do exactly this! Like so many other things, children need to... practise risk taking. How else can they learn to judge risk; To learn which risks to take and which ones to leave well alone? We keep our kids safer by teaching them how to take risks; Not by protecting our children from these important learning opportunities... Dr Kaylene Henderson - Child Psychiatrist See more

07.01.2022 Walking around our school is a joy. Children are busy with inquiry, collaborative play, extension work in STEM or taking a quiet time to read. The odd little bit of Christmas is sneaking into our days too. 2020 has been a challenging year and it reminds us to notice all the positives.

06.01.2022 Norwood Primary will have a modified Swimming and Water Safety program in 2020. We are grateful for the opportunity. As the Glen Dhu pool is unexpectantly closed for maintenance, our venue is now the Hagley School pool. This will change our time frames but will be a nice 'adventure'. Grade 3/4 students will swim from November 9th till November 20th. Grade 5 students will have 5 sessions (not 10) during the fortnight. The parent permissions from earlier in the year will cover the change of venue. More details early next term.

06.01.2022 A HUGE congratulations to Levi, who has just been announced as the runner up in the 2020 Australian Museum Eureka Prizes. This is a humungous achievement for him and we at Norwood couldn't be prouder!!

04.01.2022 See attached letter from the Secretary of the Department of Education. A copy of this letter has also been emailed to all families.

04.01.2022 Congratulations to Archie & Bente’.... our November Aussie’s of the Month!

04.01.2022 Crazy Hair Day brought smiles to our faces; crazy, creative hair to all parts of our school and raised money for a good cause. Thanks to all our parents for the support you provide - it is appreciated.

03.01.2022 We have been asked by many parents to let them know when the video with distressing content is removed. Fact is it probably will never fully disappear, and ther...e is always something else. So here are some tips for Parents: 1. Be as involved in your child's online life as you are their offline life. To them, it is just "life" it is so blurred now there is no definition in the eyes of a young person. 2. Think about the age recommendations; it is not illegal for a child to use social media under the age of 13yrs with their parents' permission but think about what they are being exposed to. 3. Consider the terms and conditions of use; When we sign up to use apps, there are extensive terms and conditions of use. By ticking that box accepting them, you are signing a document that puts all the onus back on the user. You are signing up to be a data generating commodity, handing over personal information that can be sold and shared at the app's discretion. When you click "I agree" to most terms and conditions on social media platforms you give it up by legal contract. And you probably didn't even read them. Most adults don't let alone a child. Carnegie Mellon researchers estimated that for an average individual to read all the terms and conditions we should it would take 76 days. So, you could legitimately argue the impossibility of this. Instagram's Terms and Conditions are over 5000 words long. Facebook sits at around 15,000. TikTok has a couple of pages; Google's terms and conditions are shorter than Facebook. Some of the things they state are: "you grant us a non-exclusive, transferrable, sub-licensable, royalty-free worldwide license to use any IP content that you post on or in connection with the app." Pictures, videos, posts, private messages, ANYTHING you have on your page is licensed to the app and can be sold or shared for media and marketing purposes. It also includes: All device information, your connections, what you share, and what you delete. What groups you are members of and what you follow. Your location and your IP address and the length of time you spend online. How you bank, your billing details, delivery, and home address. What your friends post about you. Wi-Fi nearby and Bluetooth "handshakes." Mobile towers nearby, mobile number, connections speeds Your ISP and all the cookies that are stored on your device. 4. Use parental controls where possible to minimise exposure to harmful and distressing content. 5. Engage with them about their favourite social media app and get them to teach you about it so you can at least know the basics. Get them to show you how to block and report so you can be sure they know how to. 6. Put healthy boundaries in place. Don't ban them from their device if they forget to do a household chore or are naughty for something totally unrelated to their device. Do not take it off them if they speak up about something that has happened online because you are scared. This is the quickest way to drive all the conversations that you want to be having underground. Instead, if you have a healthy boundary like all devices are banned from the bathroom or bedroom. So then if they are caught with their device in either place, you ban them for a week. This way, they will learn that it is safe to speak up about what is going on online without punishment unless they break the rules about device use. Limit use to the family room with younger kids so that you can monitor them. 7. Be a good role model. Keep your screen time in check. There is no use banning the phones from bedrooms if you go to bed with yours each night, for example. More information for parents is available here: www.safeonsocialtoolkit.com

01.01.2022 All 48 cross country athletes are to be congratulated on helping Norwood retain the 'B' Division shield. At a new venue, Riverside High, the team were successful in the grade 3 boys and girls team event, grade 4 boys and grade 6 boys. We defeated a strong Punchbowl team by 13 points. Special mention to the grade 4 boys with all 6 runners finishing in the top 11. Well done to Coach Ben Humphrey and thanks to Grace Evorall for her snapshots. We will celebrate with the athletes in our assemblies tomorrow.
