20.01.2022 ASBV Lambplan Figures

19.01.2022 Our main operation remains prime lamb production. Lambing in our somewhat depleted flock starts this week, and holds a lot of promise after a couple of seasons that most of us would rather forget. Our approach in the commercials this year has been to join classed ewes in smaller groups of 80 to single stud sires with leading lambplan figures. The ewes were selected with an emphasis on confirmation and depth, the rams (stud sires) are all in the top 10% in the breed for worm resistance and the top 20% for weaning and post weaning weights. A moderate birthweight and clean shedding attributes were also taken into account when selecting rams. It will take a couple of years to get numbers back to what they were before the drought, but the quality should be magic!

14.01.2022 Today marked the beginning of an intensive period of genetic development at Norwood White Dorpers - our first embryo transfer program which will take place over the next few weeks. We're taking advantage of some of our proven genetics, using joinings that experience tells us will mesh to produce some top notch offspring.

10.01.2022 DSSA QLD sale - St George Showground 17 August

10.01.2022 We've had quite a few people enquiring if we will be taking rams to the QLD sale at St George & I am pleased to say that we will be attending this year. More details to come!

09.01.2022 ***ALL SOLD*** Don't get left behind! We still have limited numbers of 2 tooth rams available, all with lambplan figures & ready for an autumn joining. Contact us for more details or to arrange an inspection.

09.01.2022 Embryos transferred today! Very happy with the results with the best of the ewes producing 19 of these little beauties, with an average of 13 embryos out of each of the flushed ewes. Only 5 months until we see the results on the ground but here's hoping they all grow legs and a head in the meantime! A big thanks to everyone involved today, we couldn't have done it without you!

07.01.2022 St George Sale Rams 2020

06.01.2022 A big thanks to the Mosely family at Etiwanda Cobar for allowing us the opportunity to buy Lot 20 - 'Mallee Boy' at their annual on property sale yesterday. A very impressive operation and they offered one of the best drafts of rams we have seen (and believe me we have covered a lot of ground looking at rams this year!!) Lot 20 was an eye catching ram in the pen with great $ boosting ASBV figures for weaning and post weaning weights. We can't wait to see the growth, depth and capacity this fellow should pass onto his offspring. #ramsale #etiwandawhitedorpers #dorper #LAMBPlan #asbv

05.01.2022 Great results at the DSSA QLD sale today at St. George. Norwood twice topped the white dorper section with Lots 19 (199429) and 20 (199431) both selling to the Southern family at Thallon for $3000/hd. Our four lots averaged $2650, the top average price for white dorpers on the day. A big thanks to all the buyers and underbidders, the Qld DSSA for their tireless organisation and Elders St George for running the sale.

04.01.2022 We're often asked by buyers how to interpret Lambplan ASBV figures in a real world context. Here is an example for a single trait PWT (post-weaning weight at 200 days of age) comparing a ram with an average PWT (8.0kg) to one with a PWT in the top 10% of the breed (12.0kg). Half of the genetic advantage of the ram is passed on (as the other half comes from the dam) - in this case the second ram has an ASBV 4kg heavier (12kg-8kg) so we know the offspring will have a 2kg (50% o...f 4kg) genetic advantage. Now you can make some calculations to determine how a 2kg liveweight advantage translates into a $ value. If we assume a 50% yield and a carcase price of $8/kg then at the same age lambs from the second ram will have a carcase 1kg heavier worth an extra $8/hd. Let's conservatively assume a 120% lambing rate and that the ram will cover 75 ewes. This equates to 90 lambs with a $8/hd advantage per joining. Multiply this over 5 years of joining and you have $3600 extra income from the second ram over his working life. Calculated over an entire flock this becomes even more impressive - 14 rams joined to 1000 ewes gives close to $50000 extra income over the working life of the rams!! See more
