09.01.2022 2013 saw my work rank as a finalist in my first established art prize. 'Powerful Owl', charcoal & conte on plywood, 60x60cm, shortlisted to the Hornsby Art Prize. To this day, 'Powerful Owl' remains my signature image and still graces my business cards.

08.01.2022 Evolution of a painting: Under The Southern Cross. I had absolutely no idea what painting this piece was going do to me.... it changed the course of my life.... This piece was painted specifically for an annual Aboriginal art competition and exhibition Reconciliation that was held at Gosford Regional Gallery. I’d entered it twice before and somehow took out the first prize on my first attempt. The following year I forgot about it and just shoved any old piece I had lying around in. I regretted not being prepared and it ate away at me as an opportunity lost. Most of the stuff I’d painted up until that point were completed in less than a day and I’d never done a full canvas dot painting. I decided that next time I’d take my time, really push myself and create something I could be proud of. The concept for this piece came to me at some bizarre hour of the morning during a night shift at my old job on the wharf. It was just a split second flash of landscape and the Southern Cross above.... but I knew instantly that that was it. That was what I needed to paint. It doesn’t matter where you are in Australia, the Southern Cross is there and it got me thinking about the grand scheme of things. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from...At the end of the day we’re all on this little blue planet together and we need to put our differences aside. Id spent so much time in my youth being angry...for what? Where had it gotten me? Nowhere. At this point in my life I have no hate left. I’d never painted anything as complex as this and I had no idea what to do. I thought bugger it and started at the bottom and worked my way to the top.It was built up like a cake in layers. Each layer represents different contrasting landscapes we have here. Ocean, beaches, bush and mountains, rivers and the desert and above them all those ancient stars sit. I painted it all the way to the top and when I stood it up to look at it, that the top half didn’t work. It looked like two different paintings and unbalanced. I had this crazy pink and purple thing there and I knew I had to paint over it and start again from the desert layer. I left it alone for weeks while I racked my brain to figure out how to finish it. I looked out the window and saw the sunset.... it was an epiphany. After two and a half months since the first dot was painted, it was now complete. I entered it into Reconciliation.... and it won...and not only that, my 7 year old son Tyson won the junior category. It was a massive day for my family. The stir that painting caused upon being unveiled to the public was mental. I wasn’t an artist, just a wharfie who painted things. Not anymore.... It has opened so many doors for me and given me opportunities that I never could’ve dreamed of. My life has never been the same and I’ve never looked back. The painting now lives on my lounge room wall. I bring it out for exhibition every now and then, but I’ll never sell it. It means way too much to me.
