13.01.2022 "Eric’s painting brings in the sun... It’s a real painting of me. It captures my heart, my soul, my spirit, my music, everything." - Peter Sculthorpe. Painter ...Eric Smith was born in Brunswick, Melbourne, and trained in commercial art at the Brunswick Technical College before serving in the army during World War 2. After the war, he recommenced study at RMIT University. Notable for experimenting with diverse art styles, Smith moved to Sydney in 1952 and initially painted in the bedroom he and his wife Joy shared. Over the course of his career, Smith won many awards for his work, including the Blake Prize (winning six times) and the Archibald Prize (winning three times). Between 1960 and 1962 he was a member of the Sydney Nine group - a group of abstract artists formed to assert the seriousness of their abstract art practice. This portrait of internationally renowned composer Peter Sculthorpe won Smith his third Archibald Prize, in 1982.
