18.01.2022 Yes... you read it right... nipple fissures. What are these... when cracks and grazes are severe they can become a deep infected wound that is very painful. To the two mummas in the last 2 months that I have helped with these.... you are amazing. You both have fed through, taken antibiotics, rested and expressed, fed again... and not missed a beat. Continuing to breastfeed. You are champions. ... This is what happens when nipple trauma gets worse and not better. You need help. Sound advice. Support. Treatment. Follow up. These take longer than cracks and grazes to heal. When infected this can take a month or more if you have had 2 courses of antibiotics to heal the infection. Your patience, persistence and strength to through this is amazing. Ultimately what heals this is correct positioning to the breast. As a lactation consultant this is what I am specifically trained at and getting to the underlying cause of why this is happening. Helping you heal while keeping up supply to meet your baby's need.

04.01.2022 Having excessive intravenous fluids in labour can cause oedema to the breast tissue. This is different to normal physiological engorgement you may experience as the colostrum transitions to milk. This type of oedema happens when the breast appears as hard as a rock, the nipple is distended and baby has trouble attaching. ... To manage this it is important to use a positive pressure compression rather than pumping at the breast using a device that involves a negative pressure. This can actually make the oedema worse as extra fluid can be moved toward the areola and nipple instead of moving away. Today intravenous fluids are used for specific reasons in labour and are at times necessary. There is something you can do about it to make your breastfeeding experience easier. See more

03.01.2022 Looking forward to putting my next ebook together all about self care and breastfeeding. Did you know that self care builds resilience to life's stressors, improves mood and relationships? Parenthood is a time when we can be pushed to phyiscal and emotional limits by sleep deprivation and recovering from birth. Self care isn't a luxury but a necessity. ... We will look at phyiscal, emotional, mental, social and family self care. All of these are important as we transition to parenthood and breastfeeding. This will include some space for developing your own self care practice! PS... having a shower isn't self care... that's hygiene... What are the ingredients for a self care shower? having no time pressure using your very favorite body wash washing, treating and massage your head and hair having a fresh fluffy towel to dry applying your favourite body lotion having no time pressure!!!
