24.01.2022 Do you know of any teachers or principals that are passionate (or even curious) about Children's Health, Immunity, and Nutrition? Or are you a parent who would love to be a part of empowering children at your school to discover more about healthy eating and how that can impact learning and behaviour? Then this forum is for you!! Its taking place tomorrow night at 8pm! It features Dr. Parsi Sahlberg Author, Finnish Researcher and Professor of Education, for the Gonski Institute. I have a limited number of discount codes available - so feel free to PM me for further details.

24.01.2022 Something to get excited about.. We live in a world of ‘easy’ and ‘fast’ food options, most of which are packaged. And lets face it, as parents we are busy, and ‘easy’ and ‘fast’ can be music to our ears at times. But as parents, we also know that when the balance tips to processed foods dominating what’s making it into our bodies, rather than the real stuff - it’s not likely to be doing our kids health any favours. Maybe you’ve made the shift to eating more whole foods ...for your family, but you find it hard to keep the kids on the same page as you because they are faced with processed options at every turn. If you are keen to: tip the balance back to more real foods and less processed foods; and get some great strategies and language to use to reduce battles around food; or you would love someone else to stand with you in empowering your kids to make better food choices then I have some great news for you. In the next school holidays I will be running The Mad Food Science Program via ZOOM (to keep things COVID safe)..and drumrollit is being sponsored by ACT Libraries which means you can access it for FREE. But places are limited and it is being made available exclusively to families in the ACT and surrounds (#luckyducks). There will be two sessions available: Thursday 1st October @ 10am for children in years K - 2. Friday 2nd October @ 10am for children in Years 3-6. Pop the date in your calendar. Booking details coming soon!!!! What is The Mad Food Science Program? Developed by @therootcauseau - It’s FUN, EDUCATIONAL & EMPOWERING. There’s tasting, talking, moving, and listening but at the end of the day, it's all about educating children to start making better food choices straight away, using fun quirky experiments to reinforce key health messages. 22.01.2022 We have all heard the phrase 'The eyes are a window into the soul'? Well, how about "Our poo is a window into the gut!" Yes, yes...ok, so you probably haven't heard that phrase quite as often. But it's one worth exploring. Have you heard of or seen the Bristol Stool Chart?...Continue reading

20.01.2022 I was blessed the last two days to run two sessions of the Mad Food Science Program via ZOOM thanks to ACT Libraries. #actlibraries #madfoodscience #empoweringkids I wanted to give the biggest THANKYOU to all the children and families who participated. We had a lot of fun together whilst also getting to the nitty gritty of what it takes to take care of our ONE BODY FOR LIFE and our ONE PLANET PLANET EARTH. I was blown away by how connected and enthusiastic the children... were - despite only being connected through our screens! #YouRocked I loved getting to know you a little through our sessions and your questions at the end in our Q&A were #thebest #childrenaskgreatquestions And a massive THANKYOU to my support team - Bella and Gabby, could not have asked for a better duo by my side. Despite making sure we had everything setup perfectly we still had some technology glitches in the second session. Bella was so level headed and absolutely saved the day. There’s an old saying Never work with children or animals I’ll take the children over technology anyday #ourkidsaresoclever #technologythesedays #sothankfulformygirls #theshowmustgoon If you are keen to find out more about the Mad Food Science Program - to see how I can bring the Program to you and your family or to your school community - then get in touch. In-person is absolutely still an option where COVID rules allow, but ZOOM is also a great way to access this fantastic, fun and educational program #dontletdistancegetintheway #covidlife #zoompossibilities #therootcauseau #nourishinglovenutrition Justine xx

17.01.2022 Do you or your children struggle with Hayfever? Are there signs of spring in the air where you live? There are hints appearing here and there in Canberra which lights a little spark in me because I am really not friends with the winter. But if you are someone who struggles with hayever - the signs of spring probably bring up mixed emotions. Cherry blossoms YES! sneezing, headaches, fatigue and anti-histamines by the truckload - maybe not! Well here's some good news - A r...ecent study found that a specific strain of probiotic reduced the incidence of hayfever (allergic rhinitis) in children. "Children in the probiotic group were three times less likely to develop allergic rhinitis than those in the control group". (1) And other recent study on adults, using two different strains of probiotics also found significant reductions in hayfever symptoms. Probiotics can be amazing - particularly when you can harness the power of specific strains for specific health issues. The strain used in the study on children - Lactobacillus reuteri - can be found as 'drops' that can be purchased at many chemists here in Australia (and is inexpensive). Interestingly - this is also a strain that has been shown in some studies to help with colic in babies. The strains used in the adult study can be found in a number of probiotic formulations that are readily available in many chemists or online. Get in touch if you would like some more specifics xx #hayfeverrelief #probioticpower #ditchtheantihistamines #functionalhealthcoach #integrativehealthcoachaustralia #springlover #guthealth #guthealthaustralia (1). https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/932591

17.01.2022 "Eeeww I don't like it?" How many times have you heard that from your kiddos when you pop a healthy option on the table for dinner? Kids do so much of their tasting with their eyes, don't they? This Pesto pasta (or 'green bolognese' as my son named it) is one of my absolute favourite dishes. However, it's a dish that was guaranteed to elicit the above response from 2 of my children for many of the years I have been serving it up for dinner. What is it about green foods... that almost universally produces this response? But all that changed last year. I made this dish - using all the veg I had left in the fridge - before heading away on holidays. I popped it in a cooler bag with some plates and cutlery to have for dinner on the road. We drove for a few hours and stopped at a little roadside stop around dinner time. It was really dark and all we had for light was the light on my iPhone. I dished this up and passed it out to the fam. The kids were all ravenous and couldn't see what they were eating. What a bonus that was! My son, who usually complains the most about dishes he doesn't like the look of - dug into his bowl of pesto pasta and mid-way through asked "Mum what is this? It's soooo amazing?" "Mate its Mums pesto pasta," I said and I shone my phone light on it. "Mum, it's my new favourite - I love it". And from that point onwards he requests this meal about once every week and refers to it as 'Green bolognese'. Just goes to show how powerful it is to get children to use their tastebuds - which are the part of your body designed for tasting - rather than their eyes. I might just have to use this tactic for a few other dishes he complains about! In the Mad Food Science Incursion part of The Children's Health Program, we use a quirky experiment that challenges children to taste things with their taste buds (the part of their body actually designed to do the tasting) rather than just their eyes. It's proven to be an absolute game-changer for many children and can start breaking down that firmly held belief that they won't like something, even before they have even tried it. In our parent sessions, we share simple messages that you can continue to use at home to break down these firmly held beliefs and help children expand the foods they will try and...then hopefully eventually come to love. For more information about the CHP or if you would like help to expand your children's diets to include more healthy options then please get in touch xx #kidsarefunny #healthybolognese #healthyrecipe #realfood #wholefoodmum #wholefood #tastewithyourtoungue #empoweringkids #eatingforhealth #endthearguments #yumgetinmybelly #eatingforhealth #healthyishappy #glutenfree #grainfree #nutrientdensefood

16.01.2022 I have been absolutely flat chat with my Masters, GAPS coaching and the rest of life this week so I've not made it onto Facebook. I'm right in the middle of writing a research paper on Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (NCGS). Did you know that NCGS has been a recognized condition in and of itself, separate to celiac disease, for over a decade? It's an interesting one as I have had many a chat with friends and family over the last 5 years who don't believe it is a real condit...ion. Who feel it's just a trendy 'fad'. How do you go with gluten? Friend or Foe? We have experienced NCGS here, in particular for my two daughters, so it's one that's close to my own heart. BUT I am excited to say that this year we appear to have come out the other side - and gluten isn't causing any of the issues that it used to. A crucial part of getting to that point has been finding out the root cause of the sensitivity for each of the girls and treating that #functionalmedicinerocks For both of them gut-related issues were involved but with slightly different causes #guthealth And nourishing foods, as always have been a big part of the process of healing #foodasmedicine I look forward to sharing more of that journey with you when things slow down here. Once I've finished my paper I will also blog about NCGS - where the latest research is at on symptoms and what you can do to manage it and both our experience and research on options to potentially heal NCGS. I've added a few pics from the last week - It was hubby's birthday last weekend and I made this delicious raw strawberry cheesecake - it was soooo delicious and free from gluten, dairy and refined sugars! #gettingtotherootcause #functionalmedicinerocks #foodasmedicine #guthealth #eatrealfoods #crunchymom

15.01.2022 An unlikely superfood! How do you feel about eating things like liver? I have fond memories of liverwurst sandwiches - they were a staple on fishing trips with my grandparents - when I was young. Tanya Jackson Rebecca BrightAnd my Nanna had a few dishes she regularly cooked for us that contained liver or other things like kidneys. ... If your not completely squeamish at the thought of these foods then read on. In the Mad Food Science Incursion part of the Children’s Health Program (CHP), we talk to the children about re-discovering a ‘real knowledge of food’ - the kind of knowledge our grandparents and the generations before them held intrinsically - in part because most of the foods available to our grandparents were ‘real’ rather than ‘processed’ but also because they usually had some age-old wisdom about the value of these foods and how they gave incredible value to our bodies. (The Root Cause ). As a generation where processed foods dominate its not surprising that we have lost touch with some of this age-old wisdom. Now just to reassure you, we don’t specifically talk to the children in the MFSP about eating things like liver - but it may be something you want to look at adding back into your families diet - even in small amounts - once you see how ‘super’ it can actually be. I have included an interesting table of data on the vitamin, mineral, and micro-nutrient of beef and beef liver compared to carrots and apples that I sourced from chriskresser.com. Now, this isn’t for a second suggesting that apples and carrots are not of great value nutritionally - they absolutely are - but it's good to challenge the belief that fruits and vegetables are the only sources of so many of the valuable nutrients that our bodies need. Check out the amounts of Vitamin C and Vitamin B12 in beef liver!!!!! Who would have thought?? And it could be a way to get a BIG hit of these valuable nutrients into your family's diet - particularly if they are struggling with eating other sources of these nutrients - from things like some F & V. Thankfully we have a few local butchers here in Canberra who are absolutely connected to this age-old wisdom. And so in lunchboxes today my kiddos have beef and liver sausages (these are from pastured animals - which is important and I will write about at another time). This makes it so much easier to include these incredibly nutrient-dense foods in our diet. I also have some organic chicken liver in the freezer that I plan to turn into pate later this week - I will share the recipe etclater. Pate is another one that I find more children than you would think actually love. Organ meats are a really important part of Gut-healing protocols like GAPS and you can now see why. So where are you with things like liver? YES! Hmmm.maybe or Hell no! xx

13.01.2022 Heart Health Awareness - Cholesterol - Statins - Nutrition You may have seen the very sad news of cricketer Dean Jones's recent passing of a suspected heart attack. This is a really great article written in response to Dean's passing by Dr Ross Walker - who is one of Australia's top Cardiologists who specalises in preventative cardiology. I've followed Ross for a while because I love his focus on prevention and his more holistic, yet still science-based approach to hear...t health. It is also another prompt (there have been a few) for me to chat to my Integrative GP about the assessment and preventative screen he mentions when I have my check-in with her in October. Maybe this could be the prompt for you to have that conversation with your doctor as well? Interestingly, in this article Ross touches on the overprescription of statins (cholesterol-lowering medications), something he has long been outspoken about. I will post another time about the importance of cholesterol in the body and how research shows inflammation, rather than cholesterol alone, may actually be the real villain in this story. A few quotes from the article: "90 percent of modern diseases are completely preventable" "It is three to four times more powerful to practise good lifestyle principles than it is to swallow a pill to lower your cholesterol or control your blood pressure" It's not always easy to get those 'good lifestyle factors' in place on our own, is it? If you need someone to help you get started on that process then get in touch - I would love to chat about how I can help in that process and/or put you in touch with a great Integrative practitioner who can also support your health. #hearthealth #integrativemedicine #nourishinglovenutrition

13.01.2022 Soooo slow cooker recommendations....I was thinking of jumping onto a website like product review tonight but I thought I would check in here first - as I bet some of you have the world's best slow cooker already!! Only requirements are that's it's BIG and has a ceramic bowl (rather than the aluminium). Mine died a while back, I've still been using the bowl and just putting it in the oven - but its just not the same as being able to set-and-forget! ... What's in the oven for tonight..... Moroccan Lamb Casserole I really didn't measure properly for this recipe but here is general idea of what I used Leg of lamb Onion & Garlic - diced Whatever veg you want to use - in this one I used potatoes and pumpkin 1 x 400 ml tin diced tomatoes approx 100ml tomato paste (I used a tin of the Aldi Org) 2 fresh pears diced (I've made this before with sultanas as well but didn't fancy them this time) 1.5 Tbsp each smoked paprika + cumin 2 tsp coriander Juice from 1/2 lemon 2 Tbsp balsamic vinegar 1.5 cups chicken stock (homemade rocks if you have it) Olive Oil (I rub the lamb with this before popping it in the bowl. Honest to Goodness Celtic Sea salt Black pepper a few bay leaves I mix the wet ingredients and spices first and then pour over the lamb and veg. Season & cook for 3-4 hours 160C I'm planning to serve with quinoa and herbed greek yoghurt for the kiddos and coconut yoghurt for Ads & I (so its DF). #realfoodrocks #winterwarmer #setandforget

11.01.2022 We made it to the end of term 3! Limited spots available! #canberralife #canberraschoolholidays #standingforchildrenshealth

11.01.2022 As you know I love wholefood cooking but I don’t love always being in the kitchen. Cook once eat lots of times .... my Paleo nachos is one of the dishes I always batch cook - the base mix is half grass fed beef (2kg) and half veg (garlic onion, carrots, zucchini, swedes & capsicum - veg diced in the thermie to save time tonight) + diced tomatoes, tomato paste, cumin, paprika +coriander). This produced 4.5L in total which will give me a few nights off cooking down the tra...ck. Served with a simple guacamole (avo, olive oil and lemon juice) cashew cheese (for dairy-free), regular cheddar and organic corn chips for the kiddos). So yum! And lunch for lunchboxes tomorrow = sorted! We introduced a friend who is dairy-free to cashew cheese tonight - if you haven’t tried cashew cheese it really is the bomb 1.5 cups cashews Juice from half lemon 1/2 cup filtered water 1/4-1/2 Celtic sea salt Blend in vitamix for 30 sec to 1 minute until silky smooth. (You would need about double this quantity to make it work if your using a thermie). What are your favourite meals for batch cooking? #wholefood #nourishinglovenutrition #crunchymomma #bigbatchcooking #integrativehealthcoach #paleonachos #eatrealfoods

10.01.2022 Hey everyone, Just thought I would pop back in and say hello. I’ve had a little break from facebook lately. Life got a little too busy while I was doing my last subject for my Masters - so while I have been on a break between subjects I have also taken the chance to slow down on how much time I spend on FB and social media in general. We also usually do a lot more off-grid camping than we have been able to do this year - so I've not had those natural breaks from being on...Continue reading

10.01.2022 A few days until my Mad Food Science ZOOM events - run in conjunction with ACT Libraries. Only a few tickets left for both sessions - so jump on and grab them while you can!! https://librariesact.spydus.com//spydu/MSGTRN/WPAC/EVENTS

10.01.2022 Hey everyone and welcome to those new to this neck of the woods For those with kiddos - how have the school holidays been? Feeling very thankful that we could travel for some of this holidays - we took the chance to visit some precious family (Jean Dore, Hayley Rawe missed you Emily Rawe) and friends (Gwen Adkins - can't wait to see you soon). With a few days to ourselves as a family, completely offline - so important after such an intense year so far. There has been... so much extra to juggle this year. It has taken us all a few days to settle into slowing down - I think I had forgotten how to just 'be' and to 'play' with my kids. We also called in to see the beautiful Belinda Smith to record a session on Gut Health for The Children's Health Quest. The CHQ is just one of the awesome programs run by The Root Cause. I am so looking forward to getting back in touch with some schools next week about bringing The Children's Health Program (https://therootcause.com.au/childrens-health-program/) back to the kids and families of Canberra and surrounds in Term 3 and 4 of this year. I so miss this work - it really is a great passion for me. And fingers crossed there will be scope to run some of the community sessions that were planned with ACT Libraries throughout this year (they were canceled because of COVID). So if you want to join me in taking a stand for children's health then please get in touch and we can work together to bring the CHP to your school or community. As an organization we have all done COVID - Infection Control Training and have a COVID Action plan so are ready and raring to go. We have been staying near Coffs Harbour the last few nights - the produce up here is so fantastic - we've been enjoying really simple meals - lots of smoothie bowls and LOTS of bananas ($1.50 kg for organic bananas!!!). xx

09.01.2022 Hey everyone, Big batch cooking - it's something I do a lot to save time in the kitchen. Cook once - eat lots of times. The pic below of most of the ingredients for my beef nachos mix. 2.5kg grass-fed beef and probably about the same or more vegetables. And yes there are turnips in that mix. Look, let's be honest turnips have a pretty unique flavour and I haven't yet found a way yet to make them 'shine' on their own, so Bolognaise and nachos are a great way to get ext...ra vegetables like turnips into your families diet that you might not otherwise eat. Sometimes I throw in a few tins of black beans to increase the volume even more and reduce the overall cost of the meal. And I couldn't do this without my 11L stock pot - this is one of the best things I ever bought at the beginning of our GAPS/wholefoods journey - nicknamed Beryl. All Beryl's I have ever met are beautiful and so is she - a highly valued helper in my kitchen. There is around 9L of beef nachos meat now ready to go. 1 dinner and two school lunches this week and the rest will go in the freezer so that I can have a few nights off cooking down the track. When it comes to feeding our gut bacteria (the garden in our gut that is so important to our health) - variety and lots of colours are key - 7 different vegetables in this mix - plus avocado in the guacamole! Warming this up for school lunches makes for the easiest school lunches. A thermos, some corn chips and some fruit and they are set. Nutrient-dense. Nourishing. Delicious. Do you big batch cook - if so, what are your favourite dishes to cook BIG? I always love new ideas. xx #jerf #justeatrealfood #healthychoices #guthealth #foodasmedicine #nutrientdenseliving #health #wellbeing #nourish #childrenshealthprogram #standingforchildrenshealth #therootcauseau

06.01.2022 Burger on a stick anyone? That's what my kiddos call these mini sticks with homemade beef pattie, avo, and tomato. It's one of their favourites. And a great way to combine quality protein with healthy fats ( in both the grass-fed beef and the avo). You could easily add a little pot of tomato sauce to add to the burger flavour. This is a great home-made tomato sauce recipe minus any additives or refined sugar - that takes only a few minutes to make (GAPS, Paleo & Keto opt...ions) https://nourishinglove.com.au//5-minute-simple-gaps-tomato Sometimes a little bit of novelty definitely helps to keep things fun. 05.01.2022 Potluck week I finally got around to sorting out my freezer yesterday. It's been a really-long-time since I've delved into the dark recesses of my freezer. The great thing is that I found loads of meals that I will be able to use over the next week - kind of like #shoppingthefreezer However, lots of those meals aren't labeled (despite keeping one of my permanent markers in the freezer so I can always find it #slightlymad) so it's going to be pot luck week here .....#...needtolabelmycontainersmoreoften Oh well, I am looking forward to a few nights off cooking..... Pics below: - my unlabeled freezer meal stash - lunchboxes today - thermoses full of yummy bolognaise with buckwheat pasta - a yummy grazing platter we had as a late lunch/afternoon tea yesterday - a bit of a laugh to brighten your day.
