21.01.2022 I get asked a lot about the benefits of apple cider vinegar. This single study showed some weight loss but less than 2kg in over 12 weeks. Thats about 140g weight loss per week. So if you enjoy taking apple cider vinegar feel free to continue. But if you are taking it for weight loss reasons and dislike it or find it expensive you might be better if stopping.

12.01.2022 Struggling to get your daily dose of veggies? Tap into the power of soup this winter Plant-based diets are one of the biggest health trends this year[i], but de...spite this most Australians struggle to meet their daily vegetable quota. The answer, according to dietitians, could be as simple as a humble bowl of soup. Dietitians Association of Australia spokesperson Nicole Dynan said soups are the perfect way to pack in more vegetables, which can improve how we feel, help ward off winter lurgies and safe guard our health over time. This winter, switch the spotlight away from what not to eat, and instead think about how to get more goodness into your day, said Ms Dynan, an Accredited Practising Dietitian. She said soups are an easy way to embrace winter vegetables, like spinach, kale, cauliflower, carrots, pumpkin, Brussels sprouts and beetroot, and also fibre-rich legumes, which count towards your vegetable intake. Whats better in winter than a warm bowl of soup? Its a true comfort food a simple, low-cost and tasty meal that can easily feed a crowd, makes a perfect lunch at work and freezes well, said Ms Dynan. She recommends experimenting with new soup flavours or ingredients, while always keeping vegetables front and centre. Think laksa soup with Asian greens, noodles and light coconut milk, or carrot and lentil soup topped with natural yoghurt and a squeeze of lemon juice, or minestrone, a family favourite combining vegetables, legumes and pasta, said Ms Dynan. Accredited Practising Dietitian Natasha Murray makes nourishing winter soups a staple in her household. Potato and leek is a classic combination that works so well. My 10-year-old daughter loves the lighter taste and will happily take it to school for lunch. And for the adults, I add some cracked pepper for a bit of extra punch, said Ms Murray. Lisa Donaldson, a Canberra-based dietitian, suggests soups featuring Jerusalem artichokes, which are in season over the cooler months. Do not be intimidated by the appearance of the artichoke! If you can steam and peel, youll have no problem. I love making chicken soup with artichokes, sliced lemon, capers, garlic, thyme and olives. These bold flavours really lift the classic chicken soup to the next level, said Ms Donaldson. To celebrate their love of nourishing foods and to mark the start of winter, Accredited Practising Dietitians will share their favourite soups on Instagram this June (@dietitians_association_aus and #LoveSoup). Top tips for nourishing soups: Make a soup with all the leftover vegetables in your fridge and add any spare canned legumes (such as cannellini beans, chickpeas or kidney beans) from the cupboard. Substitute wholegrain ingredients, such as wholemeal pasta, buckwheat noodles or brown rice, over more refined options, for a fibre boost. Use homemade stock or broth (from cooking vegetables or meaty bones) as a base, but if this is not possible, opt for salt-reduced store-bought stock. Top soups with fresh herbs, like basil, dill or parsley, or add roasted garlic or spices for a flavour twist, or roasted nuts and seeds for crunch. 11.01.2022 Q: Does cooking breakdown certain FODMAPs in a way that would make them less problematic? A: The types of food processing that we have found have the most drama...tic effect on FODMAP content of food are canning and preserving under acid conditions ie. pickling. For example, for canned legumes (lentils and chickpeas) the water-soluble FODMAPs (GOS) leach out of the legume into the brine mixture. Ensure that you discard the brine and wash the legumes before use. For pickled artichokes, the combination of acid (from the vinegar) and the leaching greatly lower the FODMAP (fructan) content of the artichokes. While it is also possible that very high temperatures may also break down FODMAPs, we have found that the extent of this reaction can vary greatly depending on the food being cooked, the temperatures used as well as other cooking conditions. In other words, it is harder to predict how effective the cooking has been in lowering the FODMAP content. We currently cant recommend the use of cooking to lower the FODMAP content of a meal and clearly more research is required in this area. At present the most reliable approach is to use low FODMAP ingredients in your cooking. See more

10.01.2022 This picture is a great example why its so important to take multivitamins that are designed for the specific nutritional needs of a bariatric patient, particu...larly within the first 12 months post surgery. You would need roughly this many gummies vitamins to get the same levels of vitamins and minerals from a BN MULTI. Taking regular supplements can be inconvenient, especially if you are already taking a number of other pills and medication. However, after weight loss surgery your body is especially vulnerable to vitamin and mineral deficiencies due to numerous reasons including: 1. Your body may not be able to absorb vitamins and minerals as well after surgery therefore your needs can be higher than before 2. A smaller intake of food volume can make it harder for your body to get all the nutrients it needs 3. You may not be choosing the right kinds of foods to get the nurition your body needs

08.01.2022 Children arent just born as amazing little eaters who love broccoli and carrots. They arent born able to walk either, and its our role as a parent to help gu...ide them when learning and practicing that new skill of walking. They fall down and make mistakes until they finally learn how to walk. Its the same with eating. Its our role to help guide our children while they learn and practice the new skill of eating. They will make mistakes (throw food on the floor, refuse to eat greens etc) but they will get there in the end, if you are there alongside them guiding the way gently and encouragingly. 07.01.2022 Nope! I find that many people think that mushrooms are a good source of protein...theyre not. They do contain protein, but its not very high (about 3.6g pro...tein in 100g of mushrooms). Mushrooms are a great source of fibre, B vitamins and often vitamin D, so dont stop eating them, just include a protein-rich food in your meal as well. See more

04.01.2022 An update on pink Himalayan sea salt: its still salt, lacks any published evidence to support the health claims made about it and many of its claimed 84 minerals are actually considered toxic contaminants (in high enough doses).

01.01.2022 Dr Christine Shares // Is The LAP BAND the Wrong Surgery? The Gastric Band or Lap Band is a Weight Loss Surgery that has been performed in Australia for over 20... years. Having been around for this amount of time, many of you may have a band yourself or know someone who has a band. I often get asked by patients Have I had the wrong surgery? I feel there is no clear yes or no answer to this question. Every individual is different and a surgery that suits one patient will not necessarily be the right one for another. For many of these patients who ask the question, they genereally have already progressed very well and most have reached their target or goal weight and are maintaining their health well. In this instance, abit of perspective helps. If you have achieved your desired weight loss, improved your health and are maintaining quality of life with no medical complications to your gastric band, then there really is no reason to consider changing to a different operation. However, we know that there are many patients who have had a less than ideal journey with their band. Patients who struggle to eat with the band, vomit or regurgitate frequently and some who have experienced weight regain, can feel unhappy with their band. Often in this group of patients, most would have done well in the first 2 to 3 years after their surgery, when they were generally motivated, compliant and attended regularly for follow-up. Over time, however, it is not uncommon for eating behaviours to slide back a little and for the follow-up visits to become a little few and far between. But what if I told you that vomiting is never normal with the band? And being on a liquid diet or blending your food is not how you are expected to live with the band? And that weight regain doesnt necessarily mean the band has stopped working? It is important to first exclude any possible complications with the band. Following this, are you eating the right way to agree with the band? Small pieces of food, chewed well and taking the time to concentrate and enjoy your meal. Has your band been over-adjusted to be too tight and thats why its easier to eat the less healthy food options but difficult to have a more ideal meal such as a nice piece of fish and vegetables? Are you eating because you are hungry or in response to your emotions or sometimes just out of boredom? These are all areas that can be addressed during your follow-up visits. I believe that if you have previously achieved your weight loss with your band, and given your band is still appropriately placed, there is no reason why you cant get back on track and start losing weight again. In a nutshell, the Gastric Band may not be the procedure for everyone but having a band in place doesnt mean that you have had the wrong procedure or that you cannot succeed with your weight loss. Seek the right medical expertise someone who is experienced with adjusting your band but who also takes the time to provide you with the right education and the support and encouragement that you need.
